听力原文:A world-champion body builder has no more muscles than does a 90-pound weakling.

听力原文: A world-champion body builder has no more muscles than does a 90-pound weakling. So what makes him so strong? What other qualities does be need?

Muscles are made of thousands of stringy fibers—a number that is fixed during childhood—which contract when doing work. Strength does not depend on the number of fibers but on the function of their thickness and how many of them contract simultaneously.

Exercise actually damages the muscles. During the recovery stage, the muscle fibers increase in size. Exercise also trains more muscle fibers to work at one time. If a muscle is weak or untrained, for example, only about 10 percent of its fibers will contract, whereas up to 90 percent of the fibers in a weight lifter's bulky biceps will contract.

Aside from strength, two other ingredients go into making an athlete: fitness and endurance. Fitness is related to the condition of the heart. During exercises, there is an increase in the amount of blood returning to the heart from the muscles. A typical volume for a runner at rest is about 5 quarts a minutes, compared with 30 quarts during a vigorous trial. This greater volume means more work for the heart a muscular balloon that expands and contracts to take in blood and squeeze it out. Like any other muscle, the heart enlarges and gets stronger with routine exercise.

Endurance, or the length of time muscles can work, depends in part on how much fuel—in this case sugar—the muscles can store. A muscle that is continually exercised until it is exhausted of sugar tends to store more when it refuels at the next meal. And more sugar can translate into greater endurance the next time the muscle is put to the test.

(33)

A.Because the fibers of his muscles are very thick.

B.Because he has more muscles.

C.Because his muscles are made of more stringy fibers.

D.Because the number of his muscles was fixed during his childhood.

Most of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in the history books are grea
t conquerors and generals and soldiers, whereas the people who really helped civilization forward are often never mentioned at all. We do not know who first set a broken leg, or launched a seaworthy boat, or calculated the length of the year, or manured(施肥于) a field; but we know all about the killers and destroyers.

People think a great deal of them, so much that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general or a soldier. And I think most people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten in battle the greatest number of other countries and ruled over them as conquerors. It is just possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight; so do savages; hence to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized. Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling them how to do it most efficiently-this, after all, is what conquerors and generals have done—is not being civilized. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some ways of settling their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off the greater number of the other side, and then saying that that side which has killed most has won. And not only has it won, but, because it has won, it has been in the right. For that is what going to war means; it means saying that might is right.

That is what the story of mankind has on the whole been like. Even our own age has fought the two greatest wars in history, in which millions of people were killed or mutilated. And while today it is true that people do not fight and kill each other in the streets-while, that is to say, we have got to the stage of keeping the rules and behaving properly to each other in daily life—nations and countries have not learnt to do this yet, and still behave like savages.

The first sentence of the passage tells us that ______.

A.most history books were written by conquerors, generals and soldiers

B.those who really helped civilization forward is not mentioned in any history book

C.conquerors, generals and soldiers should not be mentioned in history books

D.history books tells us far more about conquerors and soldiers than about those who really helped civilization forward

听力原文: "But I just paid $1.69 for this bottle of wine last week. How come the price is now $2.25? What's going on?"

There are at least three things going on that have caused the price of wine to rise. All have to do with the supply and demand factors of economics.

The first factor is that people are drinking more wine than ever before. This demand for more wine has increased overall wine sales in America at the rate of 15 percent a year.

The second factor is that the supply of wine has stayed relatively the same, which means that the same number of bottles is produced each year. Wine producers are trying to open up new land to grow more grapes. But in at least three wine-producing areas of the world France, Germany, and California new vineyards will not be available in the near future. Wines are produced in other countries, such as Italy, Spain and Australia, but none of these countries will be able to fill the demand for good wines.

The third factor is that costs of wine production are increasing. The men who make wine are asking for more money, and the machinery needed to press the grapes is becoming more expensive.

When the demand for something is greater than the supply, prices go up. When production costs, meaning the price of labor and machinery, rise, the producer adds this increase to the price of the wine.

(33)

A.The speaker is inquiring about the price.

B.The speaker is concerned about the price.

C.The speaker is bargaining with the dealer.

D.The speaker is complaining about the price.

听力原文:M: Good evening and welcome to our program. Our guest is Mrs. Green, who is an ex
pert in the field of environ mental protection. Welcome to our program, Mrs. Green.

W: Thank you.

M: Well, we hear it a lot in the news these days: "Recycle newspapers and save a tree. Collect bottles and cans so they can be reused in the manufacturing of new products." But how to promote the recycling movement? Can you give us some suggestions?

W: I think there are three essential keys.

M: What is the first one?

W: The first key is to have a more informed public, that is, to raise public awareness about the recycling process, to explain the kinds of materials that can be recycled, and provide ways on how to properly dispose of them. Local governments should educate the public on how to properly sort reusable materials from those, like waxed paper, carbon paper, plastic material such as fast food wrappers, that can't be recycled very easily.

M: Then what is the second key?

W: The second is the development of improved technology. Technological progress has been made on many fronts, but governmental agencies need to step up their support for companies involved in recycling by providing tax incentives, low-cost loans, or even grants to upgrade equipment and to encourage further research.

M: So what about the third essential key?

W: The final key is to develop a greater demand for recycled materials. This means increasing demand for the growing surplus of resources waiting to be recycled.

M: Recycling is a crucial link protecting our planet. The three keys Mrs. Green mentioned are important ways to achieve this end. Thanks for joining us, Mrs. Green.

W: You're welcome.

A.Keys to paper recycling.

B.Importance of recycling.

C.Keys to recycling improvement.

D.Technological progress in recycling.

Improve the Quality of EducationTo improve the quality of education calls for improvement

Improve the Quality of Education

To improve the quality of education calls for improvement in the quality of education in all its aspects, aiming for a situation where people can achieve excellence. Everyone should be able to achieve learning outcomes that are recognized and can be measured, particularly with regard to literacy, numeracy(数字) and other skills essential for life.

Why this goal?

Education must help learners live their lives with greater competence and greater confidence. It will only do this if it is of good quality--where the learning process is positive and helpful, and where real learning takes place. For children, it is not merely a matter of attending school, but of learning in ways that make sense, and learning things that are relevant and useful. Today's world is complex and knowledge is growing at a fast pace--learning must go on throughout life. Both children and adults need to know how to cope with change, with many different relationships, with lots of information, and with diversity and difference.

So teaching and learning must give learners the tools for life--education must lead to outcomes that are meaningful where learners feel confident in using the knowledge and skills they have acquired. Education is also about developing behavior. based on positive values--understanding and respect for other people of all kinds, for their rights, for the past and the future. This is education of high quality--only education of this kind will lead to the many social and economic benefits which countries and individuals hope for.

Importance of quality education in learning

Learners--whether children or adults--quickly react to the quality of education. Where the quality of schooling is high, for example, parents are motivated not only to send their children to school, but also to keep them there. Adult learners soon lose interest in educational opportunities ff they do not result in relevant and useful knowledge. The quality of education is therefore a factor in ensuring that education is accessible and meaningful to everyone.

What happens in the learning environment is also important. When the school is a safe environment and is well-equipped, when teachers are well-trained and highly motivated, learners are more likely to be able to achieve learning goals and successfully complete schooling.

An education of high quality also means that individuals will develop their potential--education will make a difference to the chances they have in life. In society as a whole, quality education supports positive social change. It will enable people to progress through effective learning outcomes--gaining the knowledge, competencies, skills and behaviors which are essential for development.

Current challenges

Measuring quality: this is a key challenge, so that we can say with more certainty where and how the quality of education is improving. We need better indicators and more of them, so that the different aspects of quality can be assessed.

Increasing the relevance of education: irrelevant education means little to the learner and does not lead to new opportunities in life. Education must be made relevant to the circumstances of the learner--for example, exploring the local culture and way of life and using local languages. It must also be made relevant to the opportunities that are available--knowledge that can lead to further learning and to productive work, whether locally, in the capital city or elsewhere.

Quality for everyone: this will mean special approaches for disadvantaged children and adults, such as those in conflict zones and emergency situations, those with disabilities, those in remote areas, orphans, abandoned children, and those affected by HIV and AIDS. Many of these will not be able to receive a quality education without

听力原文: "Family" is of course an elastic word. But when British people say that their society is based on family life, they are thinking of "family" in its narrow, peculiarly European sense of mother, father and children living together alone in their own house as an economic and social unit. Thus, every British marriage indicates the beginning of a new and independent family — hence the great importance of marriage in British life. For both the man and the woman, marriage means leaving one's parents and starting one's own life. The man's first duty will then be to his wife, and the wife's to her husband. He will be entirely responsible for her financial support, and she for the running of the new home. Their children will be their common responsibility and theirs alone. Neither the wife's parents nor the husband's, nor their brothers or sisters, aunts or uncles, have any right to interfere with them—they are their own masters.

Readers of novels like Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will know that in former times marriage among wealthy families was arranged by the girl's parents, that is, it was the parents duty to find a suitable husband for their daughter, preferably a rich one, and by skillful encouragement to lead him eventually to ask their permission to marry her. Until that time, the girl was protected and maintained in the parents' home, and the financial relief of getting rid of her could be seen in their giving the newly married pair a sum of money called a dowry. It is very different today. Most girls of today get a job when they leave school and become financially independent before their marriage. This has had two results. A girl chooses her own husband, and she gets no dowry.

(23)

A.It indicates sufferings in their life.

B.It indicates a greater financial burden.

C.It indicates sadness of parents.

D.It indicates the beginning of a new and independent family.
