听力原文: When the Westinghouse Science Talent Search Team named its top achievers in 1983, the grand prize went to Paul Ning, then 16.

Paul Ning is not a native-bom American. He is the son of a professor from the People's Republic of China. Ning came to the United States at the age of three. By 11, he was constructing a simple wind tunnel to study the relationship between speed and pressure. Now being a senior at the superb Bronx High School of Science in New York City, Ning feels: "You have to be aggressive in your studies to really understand what you're doing." His mother adds: "He always tries to prove to us and to himself that he is the best."

Out of 40 Westinghouse finalists, nine, including Ning, were born in Asia and three others were of Asian descent. This story has reminded us of the fact that some 10% of Harvard University's freshman class is Asian-American. While no more than 15% of California high sebeol graduates are eligible for admission to the University of California system, about 40% of Asian-American qualify.

Most educators believe that Asian scholastic achievement has much to do with breeding and nurture. Many Asian- American children have also well-educated parents who are always on the school's side. In addition, most Asians regard education as the best way to recognition and success through which they pay the indefinite debt to parents. Also, this is a way of showing filial duty. As a result, it is no wonder that Asian-American children usually do a far better job than their classmates.

(30)

A.New York City.

B.Somewhere in the United States

C.Somewhere other than the United States.

D.Somewhere other than Asia.

听力原文:W: Well, Kevin, as a college graduate, how did you become a taxi driver?

M: Well, you do it for money, obviously, like most jobs, but I enjoyed it. I suppose I enjoy being a taxi driver, (19) because 1 can be my own boss, you know, doing what I want to do. You decide what area you're going to, when to have a break, stuff like that. (20)One thing you have to be always thinking about is where you may pick up a passenger. You're always sort of scheming to make an exact bit of money. And the relationship between reward and effort is very immediate. You make the right decision, they pay you and you get a fare.

W: How do the passenger feel when you talk to them?

M: You meet some people who aren't all that nice, (21)but the vast majority of people are very nice. If you're pleased to talk to them, they're mostly pleased to talk to you. You get a feel for people who don't want to talk to you. Ob-viously the first couple of one-word answers will tell you.

W: So you always start talking?

M: I always wish people "good morning" or "good afternoon" or whatever that gets things off to a good start, because quite a few people have a general dislike of taxi drivers.

W: Do they?

M: Well, they do. I mean, the mere fact they can't get a cab the minute they want one makes them annoyed.

(20)

A.Because he can do something that helps people.

B.Because he is able to decide exactly what he does.

C.Because he can travel to different parts of the city.

D.Because he can cam a lot of money.

The smart job-seeker needs to rid herself of several standard myths about interviewing
.What follows is a list of some of these untruths and some suggestions to help you do your best at a job interview.

Myth 1:The aim of interviewing is to obtain a job offer.Only half true. The real aim of an interview is to obtain the job you want. That often means rejecting job offers you don,t want! So, before you do back-flips for an employer be sure you want the job.

Myth 2:Always please the interviewer.

Not true.Try to please yourself.Giving answers that you think will suit a potential employer and practicing a policy of appeasement (讨好)are certain to get you nowhere. An effective interview (where you are offered the job or not) is like an exciting encounter in conversation with your seatmate on an airplane.

Myth 3 :Never interrupt the interviewer.

An exciting conversation always makes us feel free—free to interrupt, to disagree, to agree enthusiastically. So, when interviewing, try to be yourself.Employers will either like or dislike you, but at least you'll have made an impression.Leaving an employer indifferent is the worst impression you

can make. And the way to make an effective impression is to feel free to be yourself!
