Observation of an object in isolation tells us not 【S1】______

more than it exists. Seeing in relation to something 【S2】______

else, however, it may be revealed to have certain

implications. For examples, if I apply a light to a

pile of sticks, I expect this to catch fire and, shortly,

to see smoke arising from them. If I see a rapidly 【S3】______

traveling billiard ball make contact with a free-standing

stationary one, I expect that latter to start to moving. 【S4】______

If I put a pan of water on the stove, I expect that, sooner

or later, its contents will not boil and turn to steam. 【S5】______

Why do I expect these things？ Obviously, becauseS5

previous experience (my own and that of others) had

led me to do such. Without this there would be nothing 【S6】______

to prevent my thinking that one could have smoke with 【S7】______

a fire, that billiard would be more to their own accord, 【S8】______

or that water would boil in the absence of heat. As it is,

observation has shown me that this is not so. For any

of the above particular things to come round, 【S9】______

it may have been preceded by another equally 【S10】______

particular thing.
