There are those who say that wearing a uniform. gives a person a sense of identification with a larger, more important concept. What could be more important than the individual himself? If an organization is so weak that it must rely on cloth and buttons to inspire its members, that organization has no right to continue its existence. Others say that the practice of making persons wear uniforms, say in a school, eliminates all envy and competition in the matter of dress, such that a poor person who cannot afford good-quality clothing is not to be belittled by a wealthy person who wears expensive quality clothing. Those persons conveniently ignore such critical concepts as freedom of choice, motivation, and individuality. If all persons were to wear the same clothing, why would anyone strive to be better? It is only a short step from forcing anyone to drive the same car, have the same type of foods. When this happens, all incentive to improve one's life is removed. Why would parents bother to work so hard so that their children could have a better life than they had when they know that their children are going to be forced to have exactly the same life that they had?
Uniforms also hurt the economy. Right now, billions of dollars are spent on the fashion industry yearly. Thousands of persons are employed in designing, creating and marketing different types of clothing. If everyone were forced to wear uniforms, artistic personnel would be unnecessary. Sales persons would be superfluous as well; why bother to sell the only items that are available? The wearing of uniforms would destroy the fashion industry, which in turn would have a ripple effect on such industries as advertising and promotion. Without advertising, newspapers, magazines, and television would not be able to remain in business. One entire information and entertainment industry would collapse.
What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Wearing uniforms has both advantages and disadvantages.
B.Wearing uniforms should be promoted strongly.
C.Wearing uniforms will destroy economy.
D.Wearing uniforms have many negative effects.

M: This saying has been scientifically proven! According to our research, laughter strengthens the immune system and lowers the levels of stress hormones...
W: Can you be more specific?
M: Well, (23)after a bout of laughter, blood pressure drops to a lower, healthier level than when the laughter began. Dr. William Fry of Stanford University found that "twenty seconds of guffawing gives the heart the same workout as three minutes of hard rowing".
W: What else?
M: Another year-long study of heart attack victims done at the Oakhurst Health Research Institute in California found that of those patients who spent half an hour a day watching comedy videos, 10 percent had a second heart attack, whereas 30 percent of those who did not watch had a second attack.
W: Wow! Laughter is really a good medicine to patients. So do we have to learn to laugh?
M: Not necessarily. (24)Since laughing is something people can do sitting down, costs no money, and requires no special exercise equipment or skill, it's the perfect workout for anyone who doesn't have the time or desire to participate in a regular fitness program.
W: Oh, I see. What about the situation in which you aren't in a mood to laugh?
M: OK, remember, (25)even when you fake a smile or laugh, you get the same physiological benefits as when it's the real thing, because your mind is smart, but your body is stupid and can't tel1 the difference.
W: Great! I've learned it. Thank you very much!
M: My pleasure.

A.The levels of his stress hormones will be lowered.
B.His blood pressure will drop to a lower level.
C.He will have a better appetite.

Recent economic hardship has given the consumer increased power in Europe as retailers(零售商) fight to win their share of reduced disposable(可任意使用的)income. This has meant falling prices, plenty of special offers and a re-examination of what customer service really means. People often point to America as an example of sophisticated customer service. In restaurants in the south of the USA, for example, waiters compliment(称赞) you on your clothes, ask about your day, compliment you on the wisdom of your order and then return every ten minutes to refill your glass and make sure that everything is to your satisfaction.
Anyone who has waited 30 minutes to be served in a restaurant might well dream of such attention, but do Europeans really want US style. service? As a friend of mine once told me, "By the end of the evening I had spent as much time talking to the waiter as to my wife. It is a question of expectations. Different nationalities expect different types of service.
Attitudes to service are, of course, affected by employers attitudes to their workers. As American sales and service personnel are heavily reliant(依赖) on commission and tips, they have more incentive(动机) to provide more service. But is this fair? Do we think it is fair to ask shop assistants to work late evenings, Sundays and lg hour shifts? Does it fit in with our picture of society? It might not be a case of "Is the customer always right?" but a case of "How much service is it fair to expect?"
The Europeans have to reexamine what customer service means because______.
A.retailers are under increasing pressure to improve their service and cater more for consumer demands
B.America has been set as an example of good customer service
C.they are aware that attitudes to shopping and consumers may vary in different countries
D.consumers income has been reduced

听力原文: Thirty years ago, anyone blaming loneliness for physical illness would have been laughed at. But as scientists studied different populations, loneliness kept emerging as a risk factor. In one study, Californian researchers followed 4,700 residents of Alameda County for 10 years, starting in 1965.
At first, the participants reported their key sources of companionship and estimated the time they devoted to each other. During the study, the people who reported the least social contact died at nearly three times the rate of those reporting the most. The source of companionship didn't matter, but time spent with others was critical.
Since then, researchers have studied men, women, soldiers and students from countries all over the world. And the same pattern keeps emerging. Women who say they feel isolated go on to die of cancer at several times the expected rate. College students who report "strained and cold" relationships with their parents suffer extraordinary rates of hypertension and heart disease decades later. Heart-attack survivors who happen to live by themselves die at twice tile rate of those who live with others.
For those of us who are still healthy, the lesson should be obvious. It's clear that reaching out to others can help our bodies thrive. It's equally clear that we're growing more isolated. In 1900, only 5 percent of U.S. households consisted of one person living alone. The proportion reached 13 percent in 1960, and it stands at 25 percent today. In a book entitled Bowling Alone, author Robert Putnam shows that oar social connections are disappearing on other levels, too In 1976, Americans attended an average of 12 club meetings a year. The current average is five. Card games, dinner parties and shared family meals have all followed the same pattern. We all have a good excuse we're too busy but we shouldn't be surprised when it catches up with us.
(30)
A.The key source of connections.
B.The time spent with others.
C.The kind of social contact.
D.The degree of solitude.

Which has the greater impact, good or evil, the heroes or the villains (坏人), Roosevelt and Churchill or Hitler? To what extent do they depend on each other, when threats produce resolve, when terror(产生,酿成) engenders courage, when an Ultimate challenge to principle has the effect of making principles stronger, forging them by fire.'? Thoughtful people want to understand what made Hitler strong and what finally killed him; and search, perhaps, for a vaccine for the virus that reappears still in ethnic enclaves, on websites, in the wilderness camps of skinhead anarchists and in the halls of Columbine High School, where two boys celebrated Hitler's birthday with a memorial massacre of children.
If all Hitler had done was killing people in vast numbers more efficiently than anyone else every did, the debate over his lasting importance might end there. But Hitler's impact went beyond his willingness to kill without mercy. He did something civilization that had not seen before. Genghis Khan operated in the context of the nomadic steppe, where pillaging(抢劫,掠夺) villages was the norm, Hitler came out of the most civilized society on Earth, the land of Beethoven and Goethe and Schiller. He set out to kill people net for what they did but for who they were.
It is this distinction that pulls us right into the heart of the question. And that is our long, modern conversation over the nature of evil. The debate goes back to Socrates, who argued that anyone who was acquainted with good could not intentionally choose evil instead. Enlightenment thinkers went further, pushing concepts of good and ceil into the realm(领域,范畴) of superstition. But Hitler changed that. It was he, perhaps more than any other figure, who demanded a whole rethinking about good, evil, God and man.
The massacre at Columbine High School serves as an example of ______.
A.Hitler's influence among contemporary youths
B.the evil nature of man
C.the virus of hatred in man
D.unexpected challenges to civilized life
