听力原文: Florence Hayes is a journalist for the Green Ville Journal, the daily newspaper in town. Specifically she covers crime in the Green Ville area. This responsibility takes her to many different places every week—the police station, the court and the hospital. Most of the crimes that she writes about fall into two groups: violent crimes and crimes against property. There isn't much violent crime in a small town like Green Ville, or at least not as much as in the large urban areas. But assaults often occur on Friday and Saturday nights, near the bars downtown. There're also one or two rapes on campus every semester. Florence is very interested in this type of crime and tries to write a long article about each one. She expects that this will make women more careful when they walk around Green Ville alone at night.

Fortunately, there were usually no murders in Green Ville. Crimes against property make up most of Miss Hayes's reporting. They range from minor cases of deliberate damaging of things to much more serious offenses, such as car accidents involving drunk drivers or bank robberies. But Florence has to report all of these violations from the thief who took typewriters from every unlocked room in the dormitory to the thief who stole one million dollars worth of art work from the university museum. Miss Hayes enjoys working for a newspaper but she sometimes gets unhappy about all the crimes she has to report. She would prefer to start writing about something more interesting and less unpleasant such as local news or politics, maybe next year.

Questions:

32. What is Florence Hayes’main responsibility as a journalist?

33. What does the speaker say about security in Green Ville?

34. What do we learn about crimes against property in the Green Ville area?

35. What would Florence Hayes prefer to do?

(33)

A.Covering major events of the day in the city.

B.Reporting criminal offenses in Greenville.

C.Hunting news for the daily headlines.

D.Writing articles on family violence.

听力原文:W: Gosh! Have you seen this, Richard?

M: Seen what?

W: In the paper, it says there's a man going round pretending he's from the electricity board. He's been calling at people's homes, saying he's come to check that all their appliances are safe. Then he gets around them to make him a cup of tea and while they are out of the room, he steals their money, handbag, whatever and makes off with it.

M: But you know Jane, it's partly their own fault. You should never let anyone like that in unless you are expecting them.

W: It's all very well to say that, but someone comes to the door and says electricity or gas, and you aut0matically think they are OK, especially if they flash a card to you.

M: Does this man have an ID then?

W: Yes, that's just it! It seems he used to work for the electricity board at one time. According to the paper, the police are warning people, especially pensioners not to admit anyone unless they have an appointment. It's a bit sad. One old lady told them she'd just been to the post office to draw her pension when he called. She said he must have followed her home. He stole the whole lot.

M: But what does he look like? Surely they must have a description.

W: Oh, yes, they have. Let's see. In his thirties, tall, bushy dark hair, slight northern accent, sounds a bit like you actually.

(23)

A.A notice by the electricity board.

B.Ads promoting electric appliances.

C.The description of a thief in disguise.

D.A new policy on pensioners' welfare.

听力原文: Purse snatching is an increasingly common crime. There are estimated 50 to 100 purse snatchings each month in the New York City subways. One of the favored techniques is to stand between two subway cars and, as the train starts pulling out of the station, reach out and pull free a woman's purse.

Recently, a crime analysis officer for the New York Police Department found that purse stealing in Manhattan's top restaurants was up 5 percent over the previous year. Where a woman puts her purse on a vacant chair at a table or at her feet beside her chair, she is inviting a purse snatcher to take it. Purse snatchers often work in pairs. When a target in a restaurant is sighted, one of them will create some kind of disturbance to gain the victim's attention. While the woman is looking away from her table, the actual snatcher will lift the purse. A popular technique is for the thief, man or woman, to carry an umbrella with the curved handle down. The umbrella handle suddenly hooks the bag and in an instant it is on the thief's wrist or under the coat over his arm if he is a man, and on its way out of the restaurant. Police advise that women in restaurants keep their purses either on their laps or on the floor between their legs.

Other purse snatchers who operate in theaters are called "seat tippers", vietimizing women who put their purses down on an adjacent empty seat. Yet others specialize in snatching purses from ladies' rooms. When a woman is in a toilet stall, her purse should never be placed on the floor or hung on the coat hook on the door.

(33)

A.Officials from the New York Police Department.

B.Officials from the New York federal government.

C.Officials from the New York local government.

D.Americans working in subway and restaurants.

听力原文: For 25 years, I was a full-time thief, specializing in picking pockets. Where I come from in southeast London, that's an honorable profession. Anyone can break into a house and steal things. But picking somebody's pocket takes skill. My sister and I were among the most successful pickpocket teams in London. We worked hotel and theatre lobbies, airports, shopping centers and restaurants. Now we don't steal anymore, but this crime is world-wide. Here is how to protect yourself:

Professional pickpockets do not see victims, only handbags, jewels and money. Mothers with babies, the elderly, the disabled are all fair game. My preferred target was the lone female, handbag at her side, the right side to be exact. So if I'm next to her I(an reach it cautiously with my right hand across my body. Only about one woman in a thousand carries her bag on the left, and I tended to steer clear of them. Women whose bags are hanging in front of them are tricky for the pickpocket, as there isn't a blind side. If you want to make it even harder, use a bag with handles rather than a strap. For men, one of the best places to keep a wallet is in the back pocket of tight trousers. You'll feel any attempts to move it. Another good place is in the buttoned-up inside pocket of a jacket. There's just no way in. Even better, keep wallets attached to a cord or chain that is fasten to a belt.

A pickpocket needs targets who are relaxed and off guard. The perfect setting is clothing store. When customs wander among the racks, they are completely absorbed in the items they hold up. The presence of a uniformed security guard is even better. A false sense of security makes a pickpocket's job much simpler.

(33)

A.It's admired worldwide.

B.It takes skill.

C.It pays well.

D.It's a full-time job.
