听力原文: Ludwig Van Beethoven was born in Bonn in 1770. Beethoven's first lessons for piano and violin were from his father. He also studied with Haydon. In 1792 Beethoven came to Vienna, where he decided to stay and try to make a career for himself. In summer months he liked to spend as much time as possible away from the bustle of Vienna. He enjoyed his stays in villages around the city. He liked the peaceful and simple life of the countryside. It was there that he composed both the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies.

Beethoven sympathized with republican ideas. He took great interest in the French Revolution and the birth of the French Republic. He admired its leader, Napoleon, and intended to dedicate his Third or Eroica Symphony to him. However when he was told that Napoleon had crowned himself emperor, the composer was disgusted and changed his mind.

As 1809 drew to its close, Beethoven produced several major works. In May 1809 Haydon died. There was no one to challenge Beethoven to be the musical king of Vienna. At the end of 1813, the Seventh Symphony was performed for the first time.

Beethoven's last years were marked by illness on the one hand and monumental masterpieces on the other. His deafness made it impossible to conduct his works or even perform. any more. Between 1819 and 1823 he composed his Ninth Symphony and some more piano sonatas. Those, together with the late string quartets, were the last works from this great man.

On December 21st, just in time for the seasonal festivities, the Bush administration raise
d the terror alert from "elevated" to "high". This is the fifth time that the alert has been raised to "code orange"—but it looks as if it could be kept at this level for quite some time. Officials seemed to be more nervous than usual, since unlike previous decisions to raise the threat level, this one was apparently unanimous among officials in the United States Department of Defense. Asked whether the alert was "truly serious", Donald Rumsfeld, the defense secretary, replied "yes, you bet your life".

The authorities have noticed a marked increase in "chatter". They have also picked up specific threats— some of them, it seems, to do with hijacking aircraft and crashing them into buildings. The targets reportedly included some big cities, for example, Las Vegas is a particular worry, but more obscure places were also chattered about, including Rappahannock County, or perhaps the town of Tappahannock, both in rural Virginia, and Valdez, in Alaska. The point of any such terrorism would be to make sure that no American anywhere felt safe.

A particular focus of concern has been flights from abroad. Air France canceled six flights between Paris and Los Angeles at American government's request. French authorities questioned and released a dozen or so passengers but several people with tickets, including one who was reportedly a trained pilot, failed to turn up for the flight. On December 29th some international airlines were ordered to place armed air marshals on flights over the United States.

On top of all this, there have also been more familiar signs of security being beefed up at nuclear plants, ports and other possible targets. Surface-to-air missiles have once again been conspicuously deployed in Washington, DC.

Inevitably, some people have begun to question whether putting the country on such a high state of readiness is worth it. The process costs about $1 billion a week. Critics worry that people will become unconcerned about repeated security alerts. They also complain about the government sending mixed signals: telling Americans they are in great jeopardy(危险) but also that they should go about their business as normal. However, the critics may be too fussy(挑剔的). It is extremely hard to see what else the government could have done without either ignoring credible threats or creating mass panic. This may be the only way to face the possible threats.

Why did officials appear more worried about the terror alert this time?

A.Because the raise of terror alert was in the seasonal festivities this time.

B.Because it was the fifth time to raise the terror alert to code orange.

C.Because terror alert would be kept at this level for a period of time.

D.Because officials in the Department of Defense all agreed on the decision.

On the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, as most Americans went about their Monda
y routines, thousands gathered at ground zero, at the Pentagon (五角大楼) and in a field in Pennsylvania where the hijacked jetliners crashed. They included families and friends of the 2,973 people who died, President Bush and other public officials, and countess strangers united by haunting but receding memories.

At the pit in Lower Manhattan where the World Trade Center stood, they commemorated the day with familiar rituals: moments of silence to mark the times when the planes struck and the towers collapsed, wreath (花圈)-layings, prayers, the music and poetry of loss and remembrance. All were filled with emotions that still cut deeply but were showing signs of healing.

"How much do I love you?" Susan Sliwak, a mother of three, intoned (吟诵) at a microphone on a platform. above the grieving crowd, quoting from an Irving Berlin lyric in tribute to her husband, Robert Sliwak, a Cantor Fitzgerald employee and one of the 2,749 killed at the trade center. "How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky?"

About 200 spouses, partners and other loved ones took turns reading the names of the dead. Many spoke directly to their lost partners, often in firm, proud voices. Others told tearfully of the births of grandchildren or of having reaffirmed their marriage vows. Many simply expressed their love and that of their children, a promise never to forget.

Under shafts of golden sunlight, many family members knelt in the pit to pray. They hugged one another, cried softly or sobbed and set wreaths and roses adrift in reflecting pools that stand in the stead of the fallen towers. The waters were soon thick with flowers.

But if there was a theme to this year's proceedings, it was honoring the dead while moving on with life. "For all Americans, this date will be forever entwined (缠绕) with sadness," Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said in closing remarks during the noon hour. "But the memory of those we lost can burn with a softening brightness."

Behind the ceremonial day, the rhythms of life in America went on. There were jobs to do, classes to attend, soccer games, weddings, births, deaths and appointments. The armies of commerce, homemakers and civil servants went about their business, not quite as usual, perhaps, but with an awareness that 9/11, a date burned into the national psyche, had edged away from catastrophe toward the realm of tragic history. It was an occasion for solemnity but no longer a wrenching heartbreak.

The purpose of this article is ______.

A.in memory of the Sept. 11 attacks

B.to describe the hijacked jetliners crashed

C.to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 event

D.with haunting but receding memories

听力原文: The global spread of English over the last 40 years is remarkable. It is unprecedented in several ways: by the increasing number of users of the language; by its depth of penetration into societies; by its range of functions.

Worldwide over 1.4 billion people live in countries where English has official status. One out of five of the world's population speaks English with some degree of competence. Over 70% of the world's scientists read English. About 85% of the world's mail is written in English. By the year 2010, the number of people who speak English as a second or foreign language will outnumber native speakers.

English is used for more purposes than ever before. Vocabularies, grammatical forms, and ways of speaking and writing have shown influence from technological and scientific developments, economics and management, literature and entertainment genres. There is no reason to believe that any other language will appear within the next 50 years to replace English.

English has become an international language. However, this does not mean that English is replacing or will replace other languages as many fear. Instead, it may supplement or co-exist with other languages by allowing strangers to communicate across linguistic boundaries. It will become a tool that opens windows to the world, unlocks doors to opportunities, and expands our minds to new ideas.

(26)

A.1.4 billion.

B.One fifth of the world's population.

C.70 percent of the world's population.

D.50 million.
