It was believed that a person was sick because he had been attacked by evil spirits. The witch doctor's job was to drive off those spirits. His technique involved a combination of three methods. The first method was religious. He chanted magic words and good luck charms. He thought these words and charms had the power over the evil spirits. Secondly, he fed the patient some mixtures. These mixtures were often filthy and disgusting, to make the evil spirits so uncomfortable that they would gladly run away.

The third method was to give the patient medicines prepared from certain plants and herbs. From our point of view, this was the only method that had any value. Modern scientific study has shown that some of these remedies had real usefulness in curing sickness or relieving pain.

During the Middle Age, the use of umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered as a symbol of the power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England.

By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas have not changed much in style. during all the time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that women's umbrellas began to be made, in a whole variety of colors.

In the Middle Ages, around the time the Crusades began, modem shoes appeared on the scene. The Crusaders, who went on long treks, needed durable, comfortable shoes that people then began making for this purpose.

The oldest diamonds were made 3.3 billion years ago when Earth was relatively young. The second time diamonds formed was 2.9 billion years ago. The youngest diamonds on Earth are 1.2 billion years old although a few smaller diamonds are about 100 million years old. Small bits of rock within those diamonds, called impurities, indicate that they probably formed from rocks laid down in a shallow sea suggesting that the carbon that made the diamonds probably came from the remains of ancient sea life.

Some people like diamonds because they are pretty, rare, or expensive but Dr. Steve Shiley has a different perspective. "I think of diamonds," he said, "as being tiny time capsules that encase a little piece of rock protecting it for billions of years and providing us with a unique window on ancient times."

It is carried by a succession of runners to the stadium. The torch symbolizes the continuation of the ancient Greek athletic ideals, and it burns throughout the Games until the closing ceremony.
