听力原文: In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each farm family lives on its own fields, often beyond the sight of any neighbors. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning, American farmers stay on their land throughout the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on buses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas, there are small schools serving a few farm families, and the children walk to school.

Of course life keeps changing for everyone, including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios, and television sets. And of course there are modern machines for farming. All of these have changed farm life.

For many years, however, farming in America was often a lonely way of living. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new methods, and to trust their own ideas instead of following older ways.

(30)

A.They live in bigger houses.

B.They live in villages or in towns.

C.Each family lives on its own fields.

D.They use modern machines in farming.

听力原文: To quickly review the main points covered in Chapter 1, the most important part of sports is its influence and popularity among people from different walks of life throughout the world. Then what is the case here? Well, if you judge by the number of people who go to see the games and by the number of those who actually play it, basketball is probably the most popular sport in the U.S. It is mainly an indoor game, and the season extends from late fall, through the winter, to early spring. There are many professional teams, but for the most part basketball is a school sport. There is hardly a high school or college in the country that does not have its team and its loyal fans.

In spring and summer, the most popular sport is base-ball. During the warm weather, you can see young men and boys playing this game in many parts of the country. Radio and television bring the details of the big games to every corner of the land, and the activities of the professional teams are a topic of conversation for Americans everywhere.

In the fall, the most popular sport is football. As you know, this is not the same kind of game that is so popular in other parts of the world. Like basketball and baseball, it is typically American, and those who have never seen it before have difficulty seeing any sense in it. But for most of the spectators the game itself is not so important as the music, the cheering, and the festive spirit that go with it. On a cool bright autumn afternoon, there is nothing so colorful and exciting as a football game.

(30)

A.Sports in the United States.

B.The most popular sport in the U. S.

听力原文: At present, human beings have used many devices to measure time. Perhaps, the sundial was, one of the earliest and simplest devices. A sundial can measure the movement of the sun across the sky each day.

The sundial worked very well only when the sun was shining. So other ways of measuring the passing of time were invented at that time. One device was the hourglass. It used a thin stream of falling sand to measure time.

By the 1700s, people had already developed mechanical clocks and watches. And today many of our clocks and watches are electronic.

So we have devices to mark the passing of time. But what time is it now? Clocks in different parts of the world do not show the same time at the same time. As international communications and travel grew, it became clear we need a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world.

In 1884, an international conference divided the world into 24 time areas or zones. Each zone represents one hour. The astronomical observation in Greenwich, England, was chosen as the starting point for the time zone.

Most people have no trouble in agreeing that time moves forward. Some scientists believe there is one reason why time moves forward. It is clear we need a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world with scientific law: the second law of thermodynamics. The law says disorder increases with time.

(33)

A.It measures the length of a day and a night.

B.it measures the movement of the sun each day.

C.It measures the passing of hours, minutes and perhaps seconds.

D.It measures the shadow of the stick across the flat surface of the sundial.

听力原文: The Europeans who left their homeland in the 18th and 19th centuries and settled their homes in North America are referred to as early settlers. Early settlers who came from the eastern parts of the present U.S.A. were used to having many trees around, so they found it rather hard to get used to living in a treeless plain like the state of Nebraska. When they first settled down in Nebraska, they needed large quantities of wood for building houses, making fires and doing many other things. Therefore they started many tree-planting plans that went on for years and years. Finally in 1872, a newspaperman named J. Sterling Morton had an idea: Why not have a special day set aside for planting trees. So Arbor Day was born on April 10th, 1872. The state government announced that it would give prizes to individuals and groups that planted the most trees. On that first day, more than 1,000,000 trees were planted in Nebraska. In this way Nebraska has been full of trees and it's green all the year around.

(33)

B.When the first Arbor Day began.

C.How the first Arbor Day came into being.

D.Who was J. Sterling Morton.
