听力原文: How men first learnt to invent words is unknown, in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feel hugs, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other, and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations--the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience, and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past, and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literery style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by then position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.

(33)

A.A legend handed down from the past.

B.A matter that is hidden or secret.

C.A question difficult to answer.

D.A problem not yet solved.

听力原文:Outrageous shopping bills are a familiar nightmare for many compulsive shoppers.
And contrary to popular opinion, men suffer that nightmare nearly as often as women. A new survey finds that both genders are almost equally likely to suffer compulsive buying disorder, a condition marked by uncontrollable, unnecessary and unaffordable shopping sprees. Researchers used to estimate that between 2 and 16 percent of the US population suffered compulsive buying disorder, and that 90 percent of sufferers were female. But a 2004 telephone survey of more than 2,500 American adults found that 6 percent of women and about 5.5 percent of men are compulsive shoppers; that's more than 1 in 20 adults. The sexes do not shop at the same aisles though. Experts say that women are more likely to binge-buy things like clothes or gifts for other people while men tend to buy expensive electronics. This survey is the first to find such a high number of compulsive shoppers in the general population. Study authors hope that this finding can convince doctors of how many people are hurt by the disorder, so they can make finding a cure a priority.

How many people of US population suffered compulsive buying disorder?

A.2 to 60 percent.

B.2 to 16 percent.

C.20 to 60 percent.

D.16 to 20 percent.

听力原文: How do you rise to the top in business? What personal qualities, skills, and background arc needed? Such questions are frequently asked by students preparing to enter the work force end by men and women already in the business world.

Some companies want executives who combine administrative ability with a specialty in some branch of knowledge, such as mathematics or engineering. Other companies look for people skilled in human relations. For them, good management is the art of solving "people problems".

These are interesting insights, but what are the specific traits that will help people to climb the ladder of success?

First, drive. Business takes an unusual amount of energy. A successful executive—almost by definition--is a striver. According to one industrial psychologist, 86.5% of top managers have a higher activity level than the average middle managers. Top men get tense when they are not striving.

Second, people sense. Some say being able to judge people is more important than a high IQ. The skill can be instinctual, but in most cases it's learned through hard work.

Third, communication ability. An executive gets things done through other people. That means his communications must come through loud and clear. Different executives make themselves understood in different ways. Some transmit ideas best face to face; others are masters of the telephone call; still others are persuasive writers. One way or another, they all communicate clearly.

Fourth, calm under pressure, or as Hemingway put it, "grace under pressure". No businessman will get very far if he chokes up.

A.Two.

听力原文: Three men are found smashing boulders with iron hammers. When asked what they are doing, the first man says,"Breaking big rocks into little rocks."The second man says,"Feeding my family."The third man says, "Building a cathedral."

Today's column focuses on the third man,the one who saw each hammer blow as contributing to the construction of a cathedral,a home for human dreams and sacred aspirations. To many of us who study and consult in occupational and organizational contexts,we would call what this third man does meaningful work.

I have come to see meaningful work as consisting of three central components.First, the work we do must make sense; we must know what's being asked of us and be able to identify the personal or organizational resources we need to do our job.Second, the work we do must have a point;we must be able to see how the little tasks we engage in build,brick-by-brick if you will, into an important part of the purpose of our company. Finally, the work that we do must benefit some greater good;we must be able to see how our toil helps others, whether that's saving the planet, saving a life,or making our co-workers'jobs easier so that they can go home and really be available for their families and friends.A growing body of evidence shows that meaningful workers are happy workers, more committed workers, and, in some tantalizing ways, better workers.

What does the second man answer when asked what they are doing?

A.Breaking big rocks into little ones

B.Feeding his family.

C.Building a cathedral.

D.Doing construction works.

听力原文: "But I just paid $1.69 for this bottle of wine last week. How come the price is now $2.25? What's going on?"

There are at least three things going on that have caused the price of wine to rise. All have to do with the supply and demand factors of economics.

The first factor is that people are drinking more wine than ever before. This demand for more wine has increased overall wine sales in America at the rate of 15 percent a year.

The second factor is that the supply of wine has stayed relatively the same, which means that the same number of bottles is produced each year. Wine producers are trying to open up new land to grow more grapes. But in at least three wine-producing areas of the world France, Germany, and California new vineyards will not be available in the near future. Wines are produced in other countries, such as Italy, Spain and Australia, but none of these countries will be able to fill the demand for good wines.

The third factor is that costs of wine production are increasing. The men who make wine are asking for more money, and the machinery needed to press the grapes is becoming more expensive.

When the demand for something is greater than the supply, prices go up. When production costs, meaning the price of labor and machinery, rise, the producer adds this increase to the price of the wine.

(33)

A.The speaker is inquiring about the price.

B.The speaker is concerned about the price.

C.The speaker is bargaining with the dealer.

D.The speaker is complaining about the price.

听力原文: In some ways the employment interview is like a persuasive speech because the applicant seeks to persuade the employer to employ him or her. Several suggestions might prove helpful to the applicant as preparation is made for the actual interview. A job applicant has the responsibility for finding out certain types of information before the interview. First, the applicant should know what kind of job he wants and how that job relates to his career objective. It is important that the applicant should be able to state the reasons for wishing to work for a particular company. Second, the applicant should seek as much information as possible concerning the company. Relevant information for the applicant to locate includes such items as the location of the home and regional offices, the financial status of the company, plans for expansion, and company philosophy. Information about most major corporations is available in reference books and periodicals.

After gathering information concerning the company, the applicant is ready for the interview. The interviewer's first impression comes from the interviewee's appearance. For most interviews, appropriate dress for man is a conservative dark colored suit with a long sleeve white or light blue shirt and conservative tie. For women a conservative, tailored suit or dress is appropriate. Both men and women should have neat, conservative length of hair.

Although hairstyle. and dress are matters of personal taste, many personnel directors form. initial impressions from these characteristics. For example, one recent college graduate, who felt himself qualified, interviewed for a public relations job. However, the personnel manager considered this young man's long hair, casual dress, and overly casual manner unsuited for this particular position.

(33)
