听力原文: A few times each month, second-grade pupils at a primary school take time from m
ath and reading to engage in philosophical debate. (32) Prof. Wartenberg and his undergraduate students from a nearby college use classic children's books to raise philosophical questions, which the young students then analyze with the vigor of the ancient Greeks.

(33)"A lot of people try to make philosophy into a subject only for the excellent few," says Professor Wartenberg, "But everyone is interested in basic philosophical ideas; they're the most basic questions we have about the world."

One afternoon this winter, the students read a story "Giving Tree" about a tree that gives its shade, fruit, branches and finally its trunk to his friend a boy. (34)The college students led the discussion--how we should treat natural objects, with a series of questions, starting with whether the boy was wrong to take so much from the tree.

"We don't actually try to convince them that trees deserve respect," he says, "but ask them, 'What do you think? ' We're trying to get them engaged in the practice of doing philosophy, versus trying to teach them."

He is not the first philosopher to work with children. In the 1970s, Matthew Lipman argued that children could think abstractly at an early age and that philosophical questioning could help them develop reasoning skills. (35)Professor Lipman's view opposed that of Jean Piaget, who asserted that children under 12 were not capable of abstract reasoning. He concluded that their curiosity and sense of wonder make children ready for philosophic inquiry.

(33)

A.Philosophical classics.

B.College philosophical course books.

C.Philosophical best-sellers.

D.Classic children's books.

听力原文: My child seems sad; is he suffering from depression? Not necessarily! Normal sad
ness or grieving is not depression. Don't worry if your child occasionally feels blue or down in the dumps. Life has its ups and downs, and it's normal for children to grieve over a loss or feel sad for a few hours or days at a time. But [32] if his melancholy (忧郁症状) lasts for more than a couple of weeks or seems to interfere with his regular activities and relationships, he may be clinically depressed. Depression is far more than a temporary change in mood; it's marked by a sense of hopelessness and a lack of energy and enthusiasm that can last for weeks, months, or (in rare cases) even years at a time. [33] The good news about depression is that it's almost always treatable. The key is identifying the problem and getting help.

What are the symptoms? It might seem logical that the most obvious symptom of depression would be sadness, but many depressed children say they don't feel sad or gloomy. Interestingly, one of the key signs of depression in children is [34] irritability(易怒). Children may be depressed if [34] they have trouble getting along with other kids and family members or have dramatic swings in mood. Other signs of depression include lack of energy, inability to concentrate, [34] poor performance in school, a sense of hopelessness and helplessness, and frequent complaints about physical ailments like headaches or stomachaches.

If your child exhibits any symptoms of depression, ask yourself three questions: [35] Is this behavior. new? Is it long-lasting (going on for several weeks or more)? Are the symptoms interfering with his ability to function at home, in school, or with his friends? If you answer yes to any of those questions, you should probably have your child evaluated by a child or adolescent psychologist, psychiatrist, or other licensed mental health professional trained to work with children and adolescents.

(7)

A.The child seems sad.

B.His or her sadness lasts for a rather long period of time.

C.The child occasionally feels blue or down.

D.He or she feels life has its ups and downs.

回答题

Graphics are used in textbooks as part of the language of the discipline, as in math or economics, or as study aids.Authors use graphic aids to (26)and expand on concepts taken up in the text because graphics are yet another way of portraying relationships and (27)connections.

Graphics are used extensively in natural sciences and social sciences.Social scientists work with statistics (28)data, and the best way to present these statistics is often in graphic form.Graphics are included- not merely as a means of making the information easier for the student to grasp, but as an integral part of the way social scientists think. Many textbooks, (29)those in economics, contain

appendixes that provide specific information on reading and working with graphic material.

key idea is the author (33)?

One warning: Unless you integrate your reading of graphics with the text, you may make a wrong assumption.(34) , from a chart indicating that 33 percent of firstborn children in a research sample did not feel close to their fathers, you might assume that some dreadful influence was at work on the firstborn children. However, a careful reading of the text (35)that most of the firstborn children in the sample were from single-parent homes in which the father was absent.

听力原文: This is Ray McCarthy with the news. Reports are coming in of a major train crash in Japan. (32) A passenger train carrying hundreds of workers home from the center of Tokyo is reported to have hit an oncoming goods train. Both were traveling at high speed. (33) Figures are not yet available but it is believed that the death toll could be as high as 300, with hundreds more injured. Emergency and rescue services rushed to the scene. But our reporter says it will take days to clear the track and to establish the numbers of the dead and injured. There was a similar accident on the same stretch of track four years ago.

(34) There was another bomb scare in a large London store last night during late night shopping. Following a telephone call to the police from an anonymous caller, hundreds of shoppers were shepherded out of the store while roads in the area were sealed off. Police dogs spent hours searching the store for a bag which the caller claimed contained 50 pounds of explosives. Nothing was found and the store was given the all-clear by opening time this morning. A police spokesman said that this was the third bomb scare within a week and that we should all be on our guard.
