听力原文:The poverty line is the lowest income that people need for an acceptable standard

听力原文: The poverty line is the lowest income that people need for an acceptable standard of living. People with incomes below the poverty line are considered poor. Economists study the causes of poverty in order to find solutions to the problem.

As the general standard of living in the country rises, the poverty line does, too. Therefore, even with today's relatively high standard of living; about 10 percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line. However, if these people had stable jobs, they could have an acceptable standard of living. Economists suggest several reasons why poor people do not have jobs.

For one thing, more than half of the poor people in the United States are not qualified to work. Over 40 percent of the poor people axe children. By law, children less than 16 years old cannot work in many industries. A large number of poor people are old. Many companies do not hire people over 65 years old, the normal retirement age.

Some poor adults do not look for jobs for a variety of personal reasons: they are sick, they do not have any motivation, they have family problems, or they do not believe they can find a job.

Other poor people look for a job but cannot find one. Many poor adults never went to high school. Therefore, when they look for jobs, they have few skills they can offer.

Some economists are looking for better solutions to the poverty problem. However, at the present time, many people depend on welfare for a living.

(33)

A.To define what the poverty line is.

B.To explain why some people live the poverty line.

听力原文: In spite of stories of prosperity in the United States, not only does poverty exist there, but crimes of various types have been increasing at an alarming rate.

Most types of serious crime increased from 363.5 in every 100,000 people in 2003 to 535.5 in 2004. In that one year, there was one murder committed every 24 minutes, one case of robbery in every 10 minutes and one case of rape in every 7 minutes. The cases of murder involved 21,456 victims. Most acts of violence were committed by young people. 57% of the criminals arrested in 2004 were youths below 25 years of age.

Everyone agrees that crime is partly a result of bad material conditions, poverty, lack of education, living without a settled home, being parentless, sufferings due to other kinds of misfortunes, etc.

There are also other factors than material conditions which are responsible for the sharp increase of the crime rate. In the first place, some states have made laws approving the death penalty but some have not. Secondly, the constitution allows every citizen to carry weapons for his own protection. It is therefore possible aid easy for anyone in the country to get a gun. Finally, there has been too much violence shown on TV and too much violence reported in newspapers of all kinds. The details of the crimes are so accurately described that even children know how to repeat what they have seen or read. All these have resulted in a higher frequency of crimes committed both by professional criminals and by nonprofessional ones such as murder, drug smuggling, robbery, pocket-picking, etc.

(33)

A.The United States is faced with many social problems.

B.Various factors are responsible for the crimes in the United States.

C.New trends have been discovered in the crimes in the United States.

D.The crime rate in the United States is on the rise.

听力原文:W: Tang Lin?

M: Yes!

W: Please sit down.

M: Thank you very much.

W: So first of all, what is your field?

M: Well. I am majoring in business studies, but the course also involves a great deal of information technology.

W: I see. But what makes you think that you should apply for this ESP course in Australia?

M: Well, it seems to me that language improvement is very important and helpful in business studies, especially with the development of international trade. But I think that an overseas course is particularly important because of the cultural insights it can provide.

W: Oh, it sounds interesting. Would you please explain it further?

M: Yeah, for example, I am very interested in contrasting negotiation styles. From what I've read, it seems that attitudes and approaches vary a lot from one culture to another.

W: That's a quite interesting point. Well, now is there anything that you would like to ask me?

M: Yes. I wonder whether there are courses on ESP for business students in this college.

W: As fas as I know, there are a number of fields in ESP, and business is definitely one of them.

M: I see. Thanks a lot.

W: It's nice meeting you. We'll let you know if you are on the short list by the end of this month.

M: Thanks a lot.

ry the beds. Oh, the mattress feels too soft for my liking!

Lin: Look at the toiletries in the bathroom — shampoo, bath-foam, even a shower hat!

Rachel: Look at that small device on the wall of the bathroom. What's that?

Lin: Oh, it must be a hair drier. I wonder how it works. Oh, it starts when you remove it!

Rachel: You'd better put it back.

Lin: I guess so.

Rachel: Let's go and see the room again. Look, there's a balcony with some chairs on it. Wow! Look, what a wonderful view!

Lin: Yes, —look at that huge container ship! It must be heading for the harbor. And look at that beautiful cruise ship down there, alongside the quay!

Rachel: What's that in the distance, just behind the container ship? Is it the mainland?

Lin: No, that's an island. The mainland is on the other side of the island, to the north.

Rachel: To have a balcony connected to your room is great. I say, Lin, there's a mini-bar under the TV. Shall we have a drink on the balcony and watch the sunset?

Lin: I don't think we should touch the mini-bar—just look at the prices! Let's freshen up, and then go down to the Rainbow Bar and use our vouchers!

Rachel: Good idea!

Lin: Let's go!

W: Of course, Mr. Lin, we've been expecting you. You'll be staying in room 612. Would you please sign the register here?

M: Certainly. By the way, do you know if there is any mail for me? I'm expecting a few from overseas.

W: Nothing has arrived yet, but we'll let you know as soon as we get anything.

M: Thanks. Oh, one more thing, I was hoping you could tell me the best way to the exhibition.

W: Sure, some of our guests will be taking taxis, but they're a little expensive. There is a bus service, if you'd like.

M: How often do the buses nm to the exhibition?

W: Shuttle buses run every hour to the exhibition center. And for your information, you can find bus, train, and plane schedules on our information rack over there.

M: Great! Umm. Would it be possible for me to change traveler's checks here at the hotel?

W: Yes, of course. For customers' convenience, we accept all the major types of traveler's checks: Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

M: Good, that makes my life a lot easier! Do you think you could give me a wake-up call at 7:30? I don't want to be late tomorrow morning.

听力原文: Robert was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 20 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Robert was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he succeeded in selling his small but genuine collection of early U.S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his imitations to England and Canada for sale and circulation. He had a hard time selling his products, because he couldn't approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who didn't have much knowledge in the field. But Robert had many ways to make his work look real. For example, he bought old books to use aged paper of the title page, and he could treat paper and ink with chemical. In Robert's time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the southern states, so Robert invented a respectable lady known as Miss Foamy Jackson, the only daughter of General Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny's financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Robert had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. Yet all this activity did not prevent Robert from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his imitations from the originals.

听力原文:The wage gap is a statistical indicator often used as an index of the status of w
omen's earnings relative to men's. It is also used to compare the earnings of other races and ethnicities to those of white males, a group generally not subject to race—or sex—based discrimination. The wage gap is expressed as a percentage (e. g. , in 2003, women earned 76% as much as men) and is calculated by dividing the median annual earnings for women by the median annum earnings for men.

The Equal Pay Act was signed in 1963, making it illegal for employers to pay unequal wages to men and women who hold the same job and do the same work. At the time of the EPA's passage, women earned just 58 cents for every dollar earned by men. By 2003, 40 years later, that rate had only increased to 76 cents, an improvement of less than half a penny a year. Minority women fare the worst. African-American women earn just 65 cents to every dollar earned by white men, and for Hispanic women that figure drops to merely 54 cents per dollar.

If working women earned the same as men (those who work the same number of hours; have the same education, age, and union status; and live in the same region of the country), their annual family incomes would rise by $ 4, 000 and poverty rates would be cut in half.

(30)

A.Males.

B.Ethnic males.

C.White males.

D.Women.

听力原文:People with disabilities comprise a large part of the population. It is estimated

听力原文: People with disabilities comprise a large part of the population. It is estimated that over 35 million Americans have physical, mental, or other disabilities. About half of these disabilities are "developmental", i.e., they occur prior to the individual's 22nd birthday, often from genetic conditions, and are severe enough to affect three or more areas of development, such as mobility, communication, employment, etc. Most of the other disabilities are considered "adventitious", i.e., accidental or caused by outside forces.

Prior to the 20th century, only a small percentage of people with disabilities survived for long. Medical treatment for these disabilities was unavailable. Advancements in medicine and social services have created a climate in which people with disabilities can expect to have such basic needs as food, shelter, and medical treatment. Unfortunately, these basics are often not available. Civil liberties such as the right to vote, the right to get an education, and the right to gain employment have historically been denied on the basis of disability.

In recent decades, the disability rights movement has been organized to fight against these infringements of civil rights. Congress responded by passing major legislation recognizing people with disabilities as a protected class under civil rights laws.

Still today, people with disabilities must fight to live their lives independently. It is estimated that more than half of qualified American disabled people are unemployed and a majority of those who do work are underemployed. About two-thirds live at or below the official poverty level.

Significant barriers, especially in transportation and public awareness, prevent disabled people from taking part in society. For example, while no longer prohibited by law from marrying, a person with no access to transportation is effectively excluded from community and social activities which might lead to the development of long-term relationships.

It will only be when public attitudes advance as far as laws have that disabled people will be fully able to take their rightful place in society.

A.Prior to the individual's 20th birthday.

B.Prior to the individual's 2nd birthday.

C.Prior to the individual's 22nd birthday.

D.Prior to the individual's 23rd birthday.
