听力原文: It's generally agreed that serious, violent crime has reached alarming laroportions in the United States. A survey by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration found that 61% of all women feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods at night; that 45 % of the population is afraid to walk alone at night near their own homes; and that 47% own guns, large for self-protection.

Those arrested for crimes and disproportionately likely to be male, young, a member of a racial minority, and a city resident. Males are arrested about four times as often as females. Only in juvenile runaway cases and prostitution are females more often arrested. One is the sex role stereotyping which encourages males to be more aggressive and daring, while females are encouraged to be more passive and conforming to the rules and norms. The second reason is the tendency of police officers and the courts to deal more kindly with female offenders. However, it should be noted, in the past decade, crime among females has been increasing at much faster rate than among males, a negative side effect which has been attributed to women challenging the traditional sex role of passivity and conformity.

Young people appear to commit far more than their share of crime, including the crimes that are classified by the FBI as most serious-rape, murder, robbery, arson, burglary, aggravated assault, auto theft. In 1985, 31% of all arrests were of person under the age of 21, and 50% of all arrests were of persons under 25.

听力原文: A critical factor that plays a part in people's susceptibility to colds is age. The University of the Michigan School of Public Health has done a study that revealed some general rules for the public. It says that infants are the most cold-ridden group. On an average, infants will catch more than six colds during their early years. Besides, boys have more colds than girls when they are under the age of three. When they grow older than three years old, it is easier for girls to catch cold than the boys. Girls might catch three colds, while boys catch two on average.

Generally speaking, the incidents of colds continue to decline while people are growing older. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds every year. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections. This is because people in this age group are most likely to have young babies. Adults who delay having children until their 30s and 40s experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more limited space than those occupied by rich people, and crowding will increase the possibility of cold infections.

听力原文:W:So,why exactly does your job have a reputation for being stressful?

M:Stress is generally driven by the feeling of being out of control of a situation, and the feeling of a situation controlling you.Trading in financial markets combines both.

W:HOW do you relax in the evening?

M:I very rarely do anything work related. So it's easy to escape the markets.I generally go to the gym or go for a run.especially if I've had a bad day.I always cook a meal rather than have a take-away.To do something my brain would regard as creative.

W:Do you think what you do to relax is an effective way to beat stress?

M:I don't think there's a specific rule about how to beat stress.I generally find that what I do is effective for me.

W:Would you consider changing your job because of the high stress factor?

M:I have considered leaving my job due to stress related factors. However,I do think that an element of stress is a good thing, and if used the right way,can actually be a positive thing.

W:What do you enjoy about the stressful aspects of your job?

M:Having said all that,I do actually enjoy an element of uncertainty.I enjoy a mental challenge.Trading generates a wide range of emotions second by second. How you deal with and manage those emotions dictates short, medium and long term trading performance and success.

听力原文: Hollywood produces many different kinds of films, including mysteries, musicals, love stories, and horror films. As different as these films may be, they generally have one thing in common conflict. The main character wants something very badly and will do anything to get it. The opponent tries to stop the main character from achieving his goal. This opposition creates conflict, and conflict is the heart of drama. To give an example, let's say the main character is a young man of humble origin who wants to marry the beautiful daughter of a rich banker. The father thinks the young man is unworthy of his daughter, and he does not allow her to see him. The young man, who's very much in love, refuses to give up without a fight. The conflict between the young man and the girl's father is what makes the story interesting; it forces the main character to take action, and through their actions we see them as they actually are. In a good story, the main character changes he is not the same at the end of the story as he was at the beginning. He learns something from his experiences that make him a different, perhaps batter person. And we learn something from watching him. Good movies not only entertain us, they also help us understand a little more about life.

(23)

A.Love.

B.Violence.

C.Conflict.

D.Mystery.

听力原文: Britain has a variable climate. The weather changes so frequently that it is difficult to forecast. It is not unusual for people to complain that the weatherman was wrong. Fortunately, as Britain does not experience extreme weather conditions, it is never very cold or very hot. The temperature rarely rises above 32℃ in summer, or falls below—10℃ in winter.

Summers are generally cool, but due to global warming they are starting to get drier and hotter. Newspapers during a hot spell talk of "heat waves" and an "Indian summer"—dry, hot weather in September or October. Hot weather causes terrible congestion on the roads as Britons rush to the coastal resorts.

Winters are generally mild, with the most frequent and prolonged snowfalls in the Scottish Highlands, where it is possible to go skiing. If it does snow heavily in other parts of Britain, the country often comes to a standstill. Trains, buses and planes are late. People enjoy discussing the snow, complaining about the cold and comparing the weather conditions with previous winters!

Contrary to the popular opinion, it does not rain all the time. There is certainly steady rainfall throughout most of the year, but the months from September to January are the wettest. Thanks to the rain, Britain has a richly fertile countryside which is famous for its deep green colour.

Since the 1950s, most British cities have introduced clean air zones. Factories and houses cannot burn coal and must use smokeless fuel. The dirt caused by smoke used to cause terrible fogs, particularly in London. Londoners used to call their fogs "London Particulars" and you could not see your hand in front of you. Such fogs are now a thing of the past, but you can still see them in old films where they add mystery and atmosphere to murder stories and thrillers!

(30)

A.It's unusual.

B.It's sharp.

C.It's moderate.

D.It's unnoticeable.

听力原文: The majority of people, about nine out of ten, are fight-handed. Up until recently, people who were left-handed were considered old, and once children showed this tendency they were forced to use their right hands. Today, left-hand- edness is generally accepted but it is still a disadvantage in a world where most people are fight-handed. For example, most tools are still designed for right-handed people.

In sports, by contrast, doing things with the left hand or foot is often an advantage. Throwing, kicking or hitting from the "wrong" side may confuse opponents, who are accustomed to dealing with the majority of players who are right-handed.

In the past, in most Western societies, children were often forced to use their right hands, especially to write. In some cases, the left hand was tied behind the child's back so that it could not be used. If, in the future, they are allowed to choose, there will certainly be more left handed people, and probably fewer depressed people as a result of being forced to use their right hands.

(30)

A.They thought them strange.

B.They considered they were funny.

C.They thought them clever.

D.They considered they were creative.

听力原文: If you plan to remain in the United States for any length of time, you will soon find it too expensive to stay in a hotel and will want to find another place to live in. As is true in cities everywhere in the world, the farther you live outside the city, generally the lower the rents will be. However, traveling to and from the city by bus, car, or train may make it as expensive as living in the city. Naturally, it is easier to join in the life of a city if one is close to the center. For this reason, you may prefer to live as close to the center of the city as possible. Or, you may prefer to rent a place for only a month or two until you become more familiar with the area.

Your best source of information about either houses or apartments is likely to be the local newspaper. Usually, the week's most complete listing of houses or apartments to rent appears in the Sunday newspaper, which, in many cities, can be obtained late Saturday night. Many people looking for hours or apartments believe that they have a better chance of finding a place to live in if they have all the information as soon as possible. On Sunday morning, they are ready to call or visit.

(33)

A.Near a market.

B.In the city center.

C.Near the city.

D.Far away from the city.
