听力原文: Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For instance, in American culture the smile is typically an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other functions. A smile may show affection, convey politeness, or disguise true feelings. It is also a source of confusion across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even suspicious behavior. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places. Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong place; some Americans believe that Russians don't smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is frequently used to cover emotional pain or embarrassment.

Our faces reveal emotions and attitudes, but we should not attempt to "read" people from another culture as we would "read" someone from our own culture. The degree of facial expressiveness one exhibits varies among individuals and cultures. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural restraints on the amount of nonverbal expressiveness permitted.

If we judge people whose ways of showing emotions are different according to our own cultural norms, we may make the mistake of "reading" the other person incorrectly.

(30)

A.The meaning of facial expressions depends on situations.

B.Facial expressions can cause misunderstanding across culture.

C.People from one culture may lack facial expressions because they experience lessemotions.

D.Facial expressions may disguise true feelings.

听力原文: The Civil War came about as a result of many differences between the North and the South. The differences bad their beginnings in the early 1800s. Tensions continued to grow for several decades. When the war began in 1861, most Americans believed the conflict would not last long. Instead, it stretched into four years of bloody fight(29). In the end, more Americans died in the Civil War than in any war the nation had fought.

The disagreements between the North and the South centered on the following five issues: slavery, tariffs, taxes, political power in the House of Representative, and political power in the Senate(30). People in the North had strong feelings about each of these issues. So did the people in the South. Each side had reasons for the way it felt.

Many people in the North did not believe in slavery. They thought the people of the South should not own slaves. Although some southerners opposed slavery, most felt they needed slaves to raise cotton and tobacco, which were the pillar economy. On the other hand, the North's economy was based on manufacturing industry not plantation agriculture. The northerners opposed slavery in the South since they had not enough people to work in their factories and wanted to get human resources (31). In the end the North won the war and the Union was saved.

(30)

A.In 1816.

B.In the middle of 1800s.

C.In 1861.

D.In 1865.

听力原文: A man who tells a story does not always try to base it on facts. He may not believe that facts are necessary in a stow. He may want to make people laugh or make them cry; he may even want to make them think.

A good story is often told in many different languages. It may live through many centuries, and millions of people may enjoy telling it or listening to it. It is not the facts of a story which make it live. The value or a story does not come from its facts, but from human interest or the way it is told.

An English novelist wrote a new book, and a month after it was published his publisher told him that 1,000 copies had already been sold. That evening the novelist had a meal with his publisher and an American friend. They talked about the new book, and the novelist told the American that 10,000 copies had been sold. Later the publisher asked him why he had not told the exact number. "To an American," said the novelist, "a thousand is nothing. I multiplied the number by ten to give him a true idea of success of the book." This novelist was famous not for his accuracy but for his novels; he knew how to tell stories. His best novel will probably live for a long time.

(33)

A.He may want to make people believe the facts.

B.He may want to make people doubt the facts.

C.He may want to make people feel happy or sad, or think.

D.All of the above.
