听力原文: The Civil War came about as a result of many differences between the North and the South. The differences bad their beginnings in the early 1800s. Tensions continued to grow for several decades. When the war began in 1861, most Americans believed the conflict would not last long. Instead, it stretched into four years of bloody fight(29). In the end, more Americans died in the Civil War than in any war the nation had fought.

The disagreements between the North and the South centered on the following five issues: slavery, tariffs, taxes, political power in the House of Representative, and political power in the Senate(30). People in the North had strong feelings about each of these issues. So did the people in the South. Each side had reasons for the way it felt.

Many people in the North did not believe in slavery. They thought the people of the South should not own slaves. Although some southerners opposed slavery, most felt they needed slaves to raise cotton and tobacco, which were the pillar economy. On the other hand, the North's economy was based on manufacturing industry not plantation agriculture. The northerners opposed slavery in the South since they had not enough people to work in their factories and wanted to get human resources (31). In the end the North won the war and the Union was saved.

(30)

A.In 1816.

B.In the middle of 1800s.

听力原文: One spring shortly before the period of Civil War, a boy appeared at the prosperous farm of a man named Worthy Taylor in Portage County, Ohio. The boy was looking for work. Taylor did not know anything about the boy but as spring was a busy season on a farm, Taylor hired him. The boy's name was Jim. Jim worked on the farm all through that spring and summer. He helped with the planting, cut wood and took the cow to posture. He was a good worker but quiet and retiring. He ate in the kitchen and slept in the barn on a pile of hay. He kept very much to himself.

Before the end of summer, however, young Jim had fallen in love with one of Taylor's daughters, a pretty young girl about his own age. He wanted to marry her. Taylor told him very plainly that he did not intend to let his daughter marry any young man without money, without name, and without prospects of any kind for the future. Jim said nothing in answer to this, but that night he packed his few things together and disappeared. No one in that section ever saw him or heard from him again.

About thirty years later, Taylor was tearing down his old barn in order to build a new one. On one of the wooden beams above the place where Jim used to sleep, Taylor noticed this name cut into the wood with penknife: James A. Garfield. "Jim" was now the President of the United States!

(26)

A.Before the Civil War.

B.After the Civil War.

C.During the Civil War.

听力原文: Last time we outlined how the Civil War finally got started. I want to talk today about the political management of the war on both sides, the north under Abraham Lincoln, and the south under Jefferson Davis. An important task for both of these presidents was to justify for their citizens just why the war was necessary. In 1861, on July 4th, Lincoln gave his first major speech in which he presented the northern reasons for the war. It was, he said, to preserve democracy. Lincoln suggested that this war was a noble crusade that would determine the future of democracy throughout the world. For him, the issue was whether or not this government of the people, by the people could maintain its integrity; could it remain complete and survive its domestic foes? In other words, could a few discontented individuals and by that he meant those who led the southern rebellion, could they arbitrarily break up the government and put an end to free government on earth? The only way for the nation to survive was to crash the rebellion. At the time, he was hopeful that the war wouldn't last long, and the slave Owners would be put down forever. But he underestimated how difficult the war would be. It would be harder than any the Americans had thought before or since, largely because the north had to break the will of the southern people, not just by its army. But Lincoln rallied northerners to a deep commitment to the cause. They came to perceive the war as a kind of democratic crusade against southern society.

A.The north under Abraham Lincoln.

B.The south under Jefferson Davis.

听力原文:The Revolution resulting in America was the most significant event in American hi
story. This country would not be here without it. The Revolution led to the making of the American Constitution. The constitution set up a basis upon which the most powerful nation in the world would grow. The Civil War is also one of the most influential events that helped to shape the United Slates. The division of the industrial North and slave-owning South resulted in the Civil War. If the South had won, the entire nation right now would be completely different. Half of our population would not have its freedom. No black person would ever have a high position in the government, such as mayor. Every single person's life would be completely different had the Civil War never occurred.

Time Magazine listed the one hundred most important events in American History. They included going to the moon, Watergate, World War Two, AIDS, the Industrial Revolution, and so on. However, at the very top of their list as number one was the atomic bomb. Some people agree with this, while others disagree. Some say that the bombing of Hiroshima was the most influential event in American History. Having this military power established the United States as the leading world country. Hiroshima ended World War Two and appointed America as the most powerful country on the entire earth; however, it leads to severe problems in the future. If there ever is a World War Three, no living thing on this earth would survive. As for now, some people believe that America is the leading country because of its advantage at the end of World War Two.

听力原文: Belfast is the Capital of Northern Island and a major city in commerce and industry. It is one of the most important ship-building and repairing centers of the United Kingdom, and has long been known for its linen textiles. Its manufactures include aircraft, guided weapons, and tobacco and food products. A large petroleum refinery here is supplied by imported petroleum which is received at the city's deep-water port. Other imports include grain, coal, chemicals and iron and steel. Among the chief exports are petroleum products, soap, food stuffs and textiles. In Belfast, there are the notable Ulster Museum and the Protestant Cathedral of Saint Anne. As an educational center, the city is home to Queen's University of Belfast and Belfast College of Technology. Although there's evidence that people once settled in this place during the stone and bronze Ages, the founding of Belfast dates from 1177 when a Norman castle was erected. Edward Bruce destroyed the settlement in 1315, the year he became the Irish King. The city was taken by the English in the 16th century. In the late 17th century, French refugees arrived here and developed the linen industry. The harbor was improved in the late 18th century and ship-building was begun on a large scale. The city was made the capital of Northern Island in 1920. During World War II, Belfast was heavily damaged by German bombing raids. Beginning in 1969, the city was the scene of religious disorder involving civil rights agitation and increased violence.
