听力原文:A potato farmer was sent to prison just at the time when he should have been digg

听力原文: A potato farmer was sent to prison just at the time when he should have been digging the ground for planting the new crop of potatoes. He knew that his wife would not be strong enough to do the digging by herself, but that she could manage to do the planting; and he knew that he did not have any friends or neighbors who would be willing to do the digging for them. So he wrote a letter to his wife which said, "Please do not dig the potato field. I hid the money and the gun there."

Ten days later he got a letter from his wife. It said, "I think somebody read your letter before it got out of the prison. Someone arrived here two days ago and dug up the whole potato field. What shall I do now?"

The prisoner wrote back at once, "Plant the potatoes, of course."

(30)

A.Because his wife was ill in bed.

B.Because the farm work needed him badly.

C.Because the weather was so bad that his wife could not dig up the land.

D.Because his wife didn't know how to do any farm work.

听力原文: One of the most popular myths about the United States in the 19th Century was that of the free and simple life of the farmer. It was said that the farmers worked hard on their own land to produce whatever their families needed. They might sometimes trade with their neighbors, but in general they could get along just fine by relying on themselves, not on commercial ties with others. This is how Thomas Jefferson idealized the farmer at the beginning of the 19th century. And at that time, this may have been close to the truth, especially on the frontier. But by the mid-century, sweeping changes in agriculture were well underway as farmers began to specialize in the raising of crops such as cotton or corn or wheat. By late in the century, revolutionary advances in farm machinery had vastly increased production of specialized crops and an extensive network of railroads had linked farmers throughout the country to markets in the east and even overseas. By raising and selling specialized crops, farmers could afford more and finer goods and achieve a much higher standard of living.

Now farmers were no longer dependent just on the weather and on their own efforts, their lives were increasingly controlled by banks, which had power to grant or deny loans for new machinery, and by the railroads which set the rates for shipping their crops to market. As businessmen, farmers now had to worry about national economic depressions and the influence of world supply and demand on the price of wheat. So by the end of the 19th century, the era of Jefferson's independent farmer had come to a close.

(33)

A.Improvements in farm machinery in the United States.

B.Farmers' loss of independence.

C.Jefferson's views about commercialized agriculture.

D.International trade in the nineteenth century.

听力原文:Unless you have visited the southern United States, you probably have never heard

听力原文: Unless you have visited the southern United States, you probably have never heard of Kudzu. Kudzu, as any farmer in the south will sadly tell you, is a superpowered weed. It is a strong climbing plant. Once it gets started, Kudzu is almost impossible to stop. It climbs to the tops of the tallest trees. It can cover large buildings. Whole barns and farm houses have been known to disappear from view. Wherever it grows, its thick twisting stems are extremely hard to remove. Kudzu was once thought to be a helpful plant. Originally found in Asia, it was brought to America to help protect the land from being swallowed by the sea. It was planted where its tough roots which grow up to five feet long could help hold back the soil. But the plant soon spread to places where it wasn't wanted. Farmers now have to fight to keep it from killing other plants. In a way, Kudzu is a sign of labor shortage in the south. Where there is no one to work the fields, Kudzu soon takes over. The northern United States faces no threat from Kudzu. Harsh winters kill it off. The plant loves the warmth of the south, but the south surely doesn't love it. If someone could invent some use for Kudzu and remove it from southern farmland, his or her fortune would be assured.

(23)

A.It has done more harm than good in the southern USA.

B.It was brought to the northern USA by Asian farmers.

C.It was introduced into the USA to kill harmful weeds.

D.It can be used by farmers to protect large buildings.

听力原文: Many years ago, there lived a poor man who had only one son. One day, there was no more money or food left in I the house, so the man said," My son, you must go to find some work and earn some money."

The young man left home. He walked many miles until he met a rich farmer who had thousands of sheep. This farmer needed a shepherd to look after his sheep so he gave the young man the job.

There were seven mountains around the farm, and there were sheep in every field on every mountain. One day, black clouds gathered. A storm began. The wind tore off branches and blew down mighty trees. The rain poured down. Paths and bridges were washed away.

The young man rushed around and gathered the sheep from the seven hillsides to lead them to shelter in the farm. He had almost reached the farm with his enormous flock when he saw that the bridge over the last stream had been washed away. There was only a wooden plank left.

It was only safe for the sheep to walk across the plank one at a time. They did not like the look of the narrow, creaky piece of wood, but the shepherd pushed a big black sheep across and the rest started to follow, one at a time, one at a time.

What happened next? I'll tell you when all the sheep are safely across the plank. At the moment they axe still going over, one at a time, one at a time, one at a time.

Have all the sheep crossed over the bridge yet? Oh dear me, no. The young man saved thousands of sheep from the mountains and fields. They all have to get across that shaky plank, and they are still crossing, one at a time, one at a time. When will the last sheep have crossed? You may well ask. The answer is, they will all have crossed when every sheep is on the other side! But just now, they are still walking over, one at a time, one at a time.

And what about the young man? Well, he is still waiting, and watching those sheep crossing the plank, one at a time.

One at a time, one at a time.

(33)

A.He wanted to be a shepherd.

B.His father had-no more money for food.

C.His mother wanted him to find a wife.

D.He wanted to earn much more money.

听力原文:W: Let's do something! Why don't we go out for dinner or go dancing.

M: I'm watching TV.

W: You're always watching TV. Stop being such a couch potato! Get up and let's do something.

M: I am doing something. I’ m watching TV.

W: You're always watching some stupid sitcom. It's a waste of time, and a waste of brain power.

M: Sometimes it's nice just to kick back, relax and laugh a little. There is nothing wrong with a little comedy in one's life. In fact, that's why I'm here.

W: Ha, ha! Very funny!

M: Besides, I am watching something serious.

W: What? I bet it's some ridiculous drama with perfect looking people complaining about the tribulations of daily life.

M: Nope, wrong again.

W: Then it must be a prime-time news program describing how some woman went crazy and killed her husband.

M: No, I watched that last night. You had better guess quickly--the commercials are almost over.

W: Is it a murder mystery? Or some science fiction show like Star Trek?

M: No.

W: A game show where they test your knowledge of useless trivia?

M: No, it's a documentary on dolphins in the Caribbean.

W: Hey, that sounds interesting!

M: Why don't we make some popcorn, and then watch the rest of it together.

(20)

A.Because it's a way of relaxing himself.

B.Because he has nothing else to do.

C.Because sitcom is very funny.

D.Because watching TV is his favorite activity.

听力原文: One of the biggest problems in developing countries is hunger. An organization called Heifer International is working to improve the situation. The organization sends farm animals to families and communities around the world. Pal American farmer Dan West developed the idea for Heifer International in the 1930s. Mr. West was working in Spain where he discovered a need for cows. Many families were starving because of the Civil War in that country. So Mr. West asked his friends in the Unites States to send some cows. The first Heifer animals were sent in 1944. Since that time more titan 4 million people in 115 countries have had better lives because of heifer animals. To receive a Heifer animal, families must first explain their needs and goals. They must also make a plan which will allow them to become selfsupporting. Local experts usually provide training. The organization says that animals must have food, water, shelter, health care and the ability to reproduce. Without them, the animals will not remain healthy and productive. Heifer International also believes that families must pass on some of their success to others in need. This belief guarantees that each person who takes part in the program also becomes a giver. Every family that receives a Heifer animal must agree to give that animal's first female baby to other people in need. Families must also agree to pass on the skills and training they receive from Heifer International. This concept helps communities become selfsupporting.

(33)

A.He was interested in the study of wild animals.

B.He started the organization Heifer International.

C.He was wounded in the Spanish Civil War.

D.He sold his cows to many countries in the world.

听力原文: All right! Enough cookies, cola and chips. It seems that junk food is all that the children want to eat these days. Television controls their tastes. The kids see well-known personalities eating potato chips, candy and other processed food and they want to be like their heroes. How do they do it? They eat the same food. I wish there were more characters like Old Popeye, the sailor, who ate spinach but not French fries.

Just because I like brown rice, beans and fresh vegetables, I don't expect my children to eat this health food. I'm glad to cook traditional meals of meat and potatoes for them. I really can't be too upset with the kids because most adults aren't careful about what they eat. The other night, my wife and I went to a party where there was plenty of drink but very little for us to eat. They served hot dogs and hamburgers. I can't eat hot dogs, with all those preservatives and hamburgers are filled with chemicals so that they look good. Besides the meat, they had sugar-filled cookies and cake and of course chips. Terrible, I don't want the world to change because of me, but I think that people should realize that there are alternatives to eating meat. They always tell me that I probably don't get my essential proteins. But I feel better than ever and I'm sure that it's because I am vegetarian. I would really like to see more television advertisements which show the benefits of good, healthy, natural food.

(33)

A.It looks attractive.

B.It tastes delicious.

C.It is not expensive.

D.They want to imitate their heroes.

听力原文:W: Dave. (19)I'm going to the supermarket to pick up food and drink for Saturday's picnic later. Any suggestions?

M: Well, (19)everyone has been talking about having a barbecue down by the river, so why don't you pick up some hamburger and hot dogs?

W: Okay, but how much hamburger meat are we going to need? And hot dogs too?

M: Uh, I don't know. How about three pounds of hamburger and a couple packages of hot dogs?

W: Oh, that's not going to be enough. Do you remember the last picnic we went on? Your roommate, Jim, ate about ten hamburgers by himself!

M: You're right. (20)Let's buy nine pounds of hamburger meat and seven packages of hot dogs then.

W: And you'd better pick up some chicken for those who don't like hamburgers or hot dogs.

M: Okay. How about five or six bags of potato chips?

W: Better make that eight or so.

M: Alright. Oh, and we're going to need some hamburger and hot dog buns. How about five packages a piece? I think that sounds about right.

W: Yeah, you'd better pick up some mustard, catch up, and mayonnaise, too.

M: Okay. What else? Uh, we're going to need some soft drinks. How about ten of those big 2-liter bottles?

W: Sounds tine, but be sure to buy a variety of drinks.

M: Okay. And what about dessert?

W: Well, maybe we could ask Kathy to make a few cherry pies as she did last time.

M: Well, I wouldn't mind that, but you know, she's been very busy working two jobs, so I'd hate to ask her. (21)OK, to be honest, I have broken up with her last week, and we haven't talked since then.
