Researchers from Zogby International did a study for the American Speech-Langusge-Hearing Association. It involved 300 high school students and 1,000 adults. They were asked about their use of portable music devices. Some of the most popular are Apple Computer's iPud, C.D. players and portable laptop computers. 40 percent of students and adults said they set the sound levels, or volume, at high on their iPods. But students were two times more likely to play the music at a very loud volume. More than half of the students said they would probably not limit their listening time. And about a third said they were not likely to reduce the volume.
The study found that more than half of the students and less than 40 percent of the adults had at least one kind of hearing loss. Heating experts say part of the problem is the listening equipment people are using. They say large earphones that cover the whole ear are probably safer than the smaller earplugs that come with most music players. Earplugs are thought to be less effective than earphones in blocking out foreign noises.
Hearing loss may not be apparent for years. But once it happens, it is permanent. About 30 million Americans have some hearing loss. One third of them lost their heating as a result of loud noises.
How can listening equipment cause hearing loss in people?

A.People may use portable laptop computers to listen to music.
B.People may set them at high volume when they listen to music.
C.People may listen to music while walking on the street.
D.People may use large earphone when they listen to music.

听力原文: Do you have a tough math test coming up? Then listen to some classical piano music just before the test. You might end up with a higher score (30) . Researchers at a university in California conducted an experiment. They asked a group of college students to listen to some piano music by a famous 18 th century composer before taking a math test. They were surprised to find that the students' scores jumped 8 to 9 points. The music seems to excite nerve activities in the brain (31) ; similar to the activity that occurs when a person is figuring out a math problem. However, the scientists warn that before you get too excited about applying this method to your math test, you should remember that brain-exciting effects lust only 10 to 15 minutes (32) . Would rock music work as well as the piano music do? No, the scientists say. In fact, the less complex music might even interfere with the brains' reasoning ability.
(31)
A.How to improve your reasoning ability.
B.Why classical music is popular with math students.
C.The difference between classical music and rock music.
D.The effects of music on the results of math tests.

W: Really? Don't you feel it enjoyable and quite beneficial?
M: No, I just feel it's a waste of time.
W: I can't see eye to eye with you. No matter what you think, I still believe class discussion is a good way of teaching and learning. As you know, class discussion can get us students more involved in what is being studied rather than sit there and listen all the time. We have a chance to speak our minds and share what we know about the subjects. Don't you feel the same way?
M: Well, in a way what you said is true, but I'd rather listen to what the professor knows about the subjects, for he is expected to be better informed. I don't think there is any point in wasting our time listening to other students who are as ignorant as us.
W: We may be ignorant in many aspects compared to the professor. But our opinions and experiences are also worth listening to and learning from. As the proverb goes, four eyes see more than two.
M: Sure, I understand many hands make light work. But some students are often dominant and aggressive in the discussion and do not respect others' right to speak. I hate those self-important and irritating fellows.
W: I admit there are such moments in class discussion. But we should do justice to class discussion though some students fail to behave themselves and focus on the topic.
(23)
A.It wastes time.
B.It is enjoyable.
C.It benefits the class.
D.It is good but needs improving.

M: Sure. Basically, our classes are made up of two major parts: lectures and seminars. The lectures are just like the general classes in China.
W: You mean, teachers give presentations, and students listen?
M: Yeah. But the students are freer to ask questions. The classroom atmosphere is warmer too.
W: Ok. How about the seminars?
M: In the seminars, students are encouraged to do some case study. In the case study, students are encouraged to share their views with the classmates. Students need to make full preparation. They need not only to study relevant laws, but also to read relevant cases to benefit the class.
W: But what do professors do in the seminar?
M: Professors are only organizers of it. They don’t express their ideas.
W: Does everyone have a chance to express his idea in the seminar?
M: Yes, since our class is very small. Generally, there are only 8 to 10 students in one class.
W: Oh, that is a very small class. How about the lecture? How many students are there in one class?
M: The lecture class is much bigger. Sometimes, there can be more than one hundred of us in one class.
W: I see.
(23)
A.The size is very small
B.Professors do the presentation in lecture classes.
C.Students can't ask questions.
D.Students should be very active in lecture classes.
