听力原文: Although important events often reflect themselves quickly in literature of a co
untry, the effect of World War I on American writing was delayed. The war promptly produced some mediocre prose and poetry, but distinguished work -- mainly in the form. of novels appeared only some years later. The best came from Ernest Hemingway. He had already written some very good short stories and one first-class novel, The Sun Also Rises. But he did not publish a novel fully involved with the war until 1929. It proved worth waiting for.

The onset of the Great Depression, on the other hand, was rapidly mirrored in American literature, especially in novels, and during the ten years after the Depression started, much writing dealt with it. One of the best of these novels was John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. But the arrival of the Depression little affected Hemingway's attitudes. During the 1930s, he continued to publish novels and short stories. They dealt with a variety of subjects but customarily revealed his high view of courage. The brave did not always survive in his fiction but they lived their lives to the fullest. It was not until the late 1930s that reference to the Depression crept into Hemingway's writing and, even then, its influence was indirect.

(33)

A.American literature was slow to reflect the war.

B.The war was hardly reflected in American literature.

C.The war was rapidly reflected in American literature.

D.Hemingway was the only author to write about the war.

Under normal conditions the act of communication requires the presence of at least two
persons: one who sends and one who receives the communication. In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there must be a conventional system of signs or symbols which mean the same to the sender and the receiver. The means of sending communications are too numerous and varied for systematic classification; therefore, the analysis must begin with the means of receiving communication. Reception of communication is achieved by our senses. Sight, hearing, and touch play the most important roles. Smell and taste play very limited roles, for they cannot receive intellectual expression from fully developed systems of signs and symbols.Examples of visual communication are gesture and mimicry. Although both frequently accompany speech, there are systems that rely solely on sight, such as those used by deaf and dumb persons. Another means of communicating visually is by signals of fire, smoke, flags, or flashing lights. Feelings may be simply communicated by touch, such as by handshaking or backslapping, although a highly developed system of handstroking has enabled blind, deaf, and dumb persons to communicate intelligently. Whistling to someone, applauding in a theater, and other forms of communication by sound rely upon the ear as a receiver. The most fully developed form. of auditory communication is, of course, the spoken language. The means of communication mentioned so far have two features in common: they last only a short time, and the persons involved must be relatively close to each other. Therefore, all are restricted in time and space.

A、communication actually takes place when the message is received

B、there are more means of receiving than of sending communications

C、reception of communication involves use of the senses.

D、it is difficult to list all the possible means of sending communications

2.Persons who cannot see, hear, or speak are able to communicate through a system of ____.

B、handshaking

C、backslapping

D、handstroking

3.The author specifically mentions that speech is ____.

A、less important than the written form. of language

B、assisted by touch, gesture, etc

C、the only highly developed system of communication

D、the most developed form. of communication based on hearing

4.Which of the following statements about communication by touch is TRUE____.

A、Touch is less important than taste as a means of communication.

B、There is no well-developed system of communication based on touch.

C、It is possible to communicate intelligently by touch alone.

D、Touch must accompany visual communication.

5.Which of the following statements about the ways of communicating ideas and feelings mentioned in the passage is FALSE____.

A、They can be used to communicate over long distances.

B、They require both a sender and a receiver.

C、They involve use of conventional signs and symbols.

D、They utilize the senses for reception.

第9题

With today's advancements in communications combined with computers and handhold devices,
we now have multiple ways to connect and socialize regardless of the distance. However, the communication method of choice is often dictated by one's age, and each age group bas gravitated (受吸引) to that method with which they have become most familiar and comfortable.

For example, most of those in our young generation have embraced email and cell phones. We use email to communicate with our friends or business associates because it's easy and convenient, especially for spanning times zones. Email also allows us time to work out our thoughts as we create the message and is less intrusive than a phone call. Most of us also own cell phones, although the primary reason is often to have a means of contacting others in the event of an emergency. Also growing in popularity are services such as Skype that enable us to make free or low-cost phone calls from our computers.

But many in my generation are also caught between the resistance of our parents' older generation to new technology and the lightening-fast adoption to instant ways of connecting exhibited by our children and others of younger generations. Many older adults in our lives would rather keep in touch by means of their land-line house phone. This creates a dilemma for those of us who have become accustomed to more modern forms of communication. As our parents and grandparents age, we encourage them to take advantage of modern technology and carry a cell phone or use email so we can easily keep in touch, but they often resist bemuse of the cost and complexity.

Fortunately there are some modern conveniences that do a better job of bridging the gap between today's technology and yesterday's comfort level. The Jitterbug cell phone, for example, was designed for seniors and is much easier to use than most other cell phones. It also offers that familiar feel of the traditional phone with its use of a dial tone and access to a friendly operator when you dial zero. And if the older adults in your life can't afford or are overwhelmed by a computer, there are products like MyCelery (a two-way communication method using familiar fax hardware) and Presto (a communication service offering one-way delivery of photos and letters) that can help them be connected enough to enjoy the instant gratification (满意) of receiving digital pictures or a quick e-note. The younger generation is less into using email and more into instant connections using SMS (Short Message Service) ,also known as text messaging or texting, on their cell phones. One way to win brownie (核仁巧克力饼) points with your grandkids is to flex your thumbs on your cell phone keypad and send them text messages, According to a recent poll by Cingular Wireless, the majority of parents who text their children felt that it improved communications with their kids and made them easier to reach.

What's the author's attitude toward the change of communication methods?

A.The author shows no interest in the change of communication methods.

B.The author thinks the new way is more convenient and helpful.

C.The author believes it is useless to change the communication method.

D.The author can accept the change but insist on the traditional way.

听力原文: Where did the term Piggy Bank come from? Today the simple piggy bank is seen everywhere as the symbol of saving and frugality, for putting away funds for a rainy day, or building a nest egg for life's sudden money needs, such as paying college expenses, buying a home, or financing retirement. But why a pig? Dogs bury bones for a rainy day. Why not a dog shaped bank for coins? Squirrels are well known hoarders too and we talk about squirreling away valuables. Why not a bank in the shape of a squirrel? Well nevertheless, for 300 years, children's banks have been imitation pigs with slots in the back. Charles Bernardy, the author of Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things, tells how the symbol came about by coincidence. According to Bernardy, during the middle ages, mined metal was scarce and expensive, therefore was rarely used in the manufacture of household utensils. The type of orange clay, known of pygg, spelt pygg, was more abundant and economical throughout western Europe. It was used in making dishes, cups, pots and jars. And so these earthenware items were referred to as pygg. Frugal people saved cash in kitchen pots and jars. Although a pygg jar was not originally shaped like a pig, the name persisted. However by the 18th century, pygg, p-y-g-g jar became pig, pig jar or pig bank. Potters had simply begun to cast the bank in the shape of its common name. In the United States, the popular piggy bank has always been a symbol of saving money.

(30)

A.History of money.

B.Anecdote of a pig.

C.Economics in western Europe.

D.The term Piggy Bank.
