听力原文: Mary did not like getting up early in the morning. If her sister did not wake her, she would be late often for her classes. One day a lecture was going to be given By a famous artist at nine o'clock. Her sister and brother-in-law were away. She set her alarm for half past seven. This should give her plenty of time to get ready and arrive early enough for a good seat. She was determined to be there in time. She would never forgive herself for missing the lecture. She had been admiring the artist's work since she was a child.

The next morning, she slept through the alarm and woke up at half past eight. She was not used to rushing and everything went wrong. At last, she was ready, and rushed out to catch a bus. She jumped on the first one. She looked at her watch, but it was not there. She must have forgotten to put it on in her rush. When she arrived at the university, she hurried to the lecture hall. She was astonished to find that the doors were locked. She looked round to find someone, and saw a clock which said half past seven, "I can't understand it!" she cried out. "Nobody's here and the clock is slow!" Then she suddenly remembered. Her alarm clock had stopped the day before and she must have forgotten to reset the hands. "This is the first time I'll hear the beginning of a lecture," she said to herself, laughing.

听力原文: Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops. And even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. Many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.

Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.

At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it. But one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea lasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.

(30)

A.Because they liked to cat tea leaves.

B.Because they were curious about the taste of tea leaves,

C.Because they did not know how to do with tea.

D.Because they wanted to make sandwiches with tea.

听力原文: The college had a very good football team, and its best player was a student who always had trouble in school. Then one year the dean of the college said that the player would have to leave because he had cheated on an exam. The football coach immediately went to the dean to try to persuade him to let the student stay in school. The dean showed him two answer papers. "This one is Susan's paper. She's the best student in the class, "he said. "And this one's your football player's. They're exactly the same. The football player sat at the next desk, and just copied from her."

"But maybe she copied from him," the coach said. "You can't prove it was the other way."

"Look at this, "the dean said." Susan didn't know the answer to this question so she wrote, 'I don't know'. And your football player wrote, ' Neither do I'."

听力原文: Amy Johnson was a very ambitious and energetic person. She didn't have much in common with other girls in her school, however. She played football better than most boys, and unfortunately she made a rather bad impression on many of her teachers. Amy just didn't act the way they thought a girl should. She studied at a university and later took a job as a typist. Although she was enthusiastic and did her best, she made a lot of mistakes and was poorly paid. She didn't want to be a typist anyway -- she dreamed of becoming a pilot!

Amy moved to London, borrowed some money, and learned to fly. Nobody, however, wanted to hire a female pilot. She decided to fly alone to Australia to prove that she could fly as well as any man. Her parents lent her money to buy an airplane.

Amy set off on May 5,1930. Her route took over Vienna, Constantinople, and Baghdad. She was caught in a sandstorm and had to make an emergency landing in the desert. But she landed in India six days later. She had broken the record to India by two days. Over Burma, she ran into a monsoon, and was able to save herself only by landing on a football field. She finally reached Australia. The plane propeller had been broken during her last landing, and she had to crash-land. But Amy had proved that she could fly -- and that a woman could do almost anything she really put her mind to.

(33)

A.Because she played football better than most boys.

B.Because she made a lot of mistakes though she did-her best.

C.Because she performed poorly in her studies.

D.Because she didn't act the way the teachers thought a girl should.

听力原文:M: Hi, Kate. How are you getting on?

W: Hey, what are you doing here? I didn't expect you until later.

M: Well, I've already finished everything I had to do at work, so I thought I'd come back and help you. I know you've had a busy day.

W: I've had an extremely busy day, and it hasn't finished yet. Did you remember we've got Paul and Hannah for dinner tonight?

M: Yes, I did. Have you got everything you need?

W: Well, I've already done the shopping, but I haven't bought the wine yet.

M: Oh, I'll do that. Have you picked up the children yet?

W: No, I haven't done that yet. They're still at school.

M: OK, well, I'll get them when I buy the wine.

W: No, they've got their sports club, so they'll be there until about six. You're more important here. Have you collected the car from the garage yet? It should be ready by now.

M: No, I haven't. I'll go to the garage later. Now, what next?

W: Well, the kitchen is clean, but you could check the bathroom for me.

M: OK. Have you thrown away the pile of newspapers in the front room?

W: No, they're still lying on the table.

M: I'll take out the rubbish as well.

W: I've already done that. Now, I haven't started cooking yet, and it's getting late. When you've got the wine, can you lay the table? Here's the table cloth and knives and forks. And mend the television? It still doesn't work. Oh, and wrap up your mother's birthday present. It still needs wrapping paper. And turn on the heating. It's getting quite cold in here.
