听力原文:W: When you write a novel, do you know where you're going, Dr. James?

M: Yes, you must, really. If you're writing the classical detective story, because it must be so carefully plotted and so carefully clued. I have schemes. I have charts. I have diagrams. It doesn't mean to say I always get it right, but I do plan before I begin writing. But what is so fascinating is how a book changes during the process of writing. It seems to me that creative writing is a process of revelation, really, rather than of creativity in the ordinary sense.

W: When you're planning the basic structure, do you like to go away to be sure that you're by yourself?

M: I need to be by myself certainly, absolutely. I can't even bare anybody else in the house. I don't mind much where I am as long as I' ve got enough space to write, but I need to be completely alone. W: Is that very important to you?

M: Oh, yes. I've never been lonely in all my life.

W: How extraordinary! Never?

M: No, never.

W: You're very lucky. Someone once said that there's a bit of ice at the heart of every writer.

M: Yes. I think this is true. The writer can stand aside from experience and look at it, watch it happening. There is this "detachment" and I realize that there are obviously experiences which would overwhelm everyone. But very often, a writer can appear to stand aside, and this detachment makes people feel there's a bit of ice in the heart.

19. Q: What is the key to write a good classical detective story according to the man?

20. Q:What does the man mainly need when working on a book?.

21. Q:What does the man say about writers?

(24)

A.Unique descriptive skills.

B.Good knowledge of readers' tastes.

C.Colorful world experiences.

D.Careful plotting and clueing.

M: Yes, I'11 tell you later about it. Thank God. There are still two groups ahead of us. The one being giving now is on the rights of the consumer and analysis of the stock market.

W: Yes. But James! You do look cold! You are shivering! What happened?

M: I've been standing outside in freezing temperature for over an hour, waiting for the bus.

W: Over an hour? But isn't your apartment only a ten-minute bus ride to our school?

M: Yes. But the bus this morning was delayed because of the weather. And when I stepped into a drug-store to call home for a ride, the bus went by. And there was no one at home! So I had to wait another 40 minutes for the next bus to come.

听力原文:(16) Daniel Hale Williams was an example of a brilliant African-American doctor w

听力原文: (16) Daniel Hale Williams was an example of a brilliant African-American doctor who managed to find success despite the obstacles white Americans placed in front of him. He was born in 1856 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Almost immediately after graduating, (17) he needed to open his own office because at that time no Chicago hospitals would allow black doctors to "use modern facilities and equipment to complete their medical training and care for patients". After two years of successfully running his own hospital, Daniel Hale Williams was confronted with an operation that had never been accomplished. While working in the emergency room, a black express man, James Cornish, rushed in with a knife trauma into his chest. (18) None of the other doctors seemed to know what to do since the external bleeding had stopped, plus there was no way for them to see what was happening inside his chest. This was because there were no x-ray machines available to the doctors, because they were not yet discovered. As the night progressed, Cornish's state began to diminish. After careful evaluation and assessment, Daniel decided that performing open heart surgery on Cornish was the most promising procedure for them to take. Daniel took on the challenge of performing an operation without much technology or advancement. While in the operating room, Daniel "decided to operate on the left side of the chest cavity. (19) The surgery was a success and James Cornish lived for twenty years after the operation was completed. With all of this agony and strength, Daniel Hale Williams became the first person to perform. a successful heart surgery."

16. What is the purpose of the passage?

17.Why didn't Williams work at a hospital?

18.Why hadn't open heart surgery been performed before?

19.How do we know the operation was really successful?

(7)

A.To talk about Daniel Hale William's life.

B.To show how racial discrimination was.

C.To show how an African American paid off.

D.To demonstrate the first open heart surgery.

听力原文:M: Hi, Jane. How is your vacation?

W: Terrific! I went to Washington D.C. to visit my cousin. I saw the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Smithsonian Institution, and the White House.

M: I've never been to Washington. What did you like the best?

W: Oh, the White House. Did you know that it's been the official home of our presidents since 1800? And every president except George Washington has lived in it.

M: I didn't know it was that old. Is it really as nice as everyone says it is?

W: It's only a three-storey building built of stone. But it's simple and definite. It used to be called the "President's House". President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name in 1901. The White House has a fascinating history. It survived a fire at the hands of the British in 1814.

M: I remember now. The president then was James Madison. And his wife Dolley ran out of the burning building carrying Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Washington.

W: Yes, that's right. It's hanging in the East Room now.

M: How big is the White House?

W: It's big. Imagine 18 acres of land with gardens and 132 rooms. It has to be painted every four years.

M: How much were you allowed to see?

W: Not very much. Only six of the rooms are open to the public. It's a popular tour, and there is always a line of people waiting. They want to look at their property, I guess.

M: Their property?

W: Sure. The White House is owned by the people of the United States. We elect the leaders who live in it.

M: But can just anyone go inside?

W: Of course. Anyone can see our president's home.

(20)

A.George Washington.

B.Thomas Jefferson.

C.James Madison.

D.Abraham Lincoln.

听力原文:W: Good evening and welcome to tonight's edition of Legendary Lives. Our subject
this evening is James Dean, actor and hero for the young people of his time. Edward Murray is the author of a new biography of Dean. Good evening, Edward.

M: Hello, Tina.

W: Edward, tell us what you know about Dean's early life.

M: He was born in Indiana in 1931, but his parents moved to California when he was five. He wasn't there long though because his mother passed away just four years later. Jimmy's father sent him back to Indiana after that to live with his aunt.

W: So how did he get into acting?

M: Well, first he acted in plays at high school, then he went to college in California where he got seriously into acting. In 1951 he moved to New York to do more stage acting.

W: Then when did his movie career really start?

M: 1955. His first starring role was in East of Eden. It was fabulous. Dean became a huge success. But the movie that really made him famous was his second one—Rebel without a Cause, that was about teenagers who felt like they didn't fit into society.

W: So how many more movies did he make?

M: Just one more, then he died in that car crash in California in 1955.

W: What a tragedy! He only made three movies! So what made him the legend he still is today?

M: Well I guess his looks, his acting ability, his short life, and maybe the type of character he played in his movies. Many young people saw him as a symbol of American youths.

What is the woman doing?

A.Interviewing a movie star.

B.Discussing teenage role models.
