听力原文:M: Good morning, Ms. Smith. Welcome to today's show.
W: Thank you.
M: Today we're going to talk about the living of foreign students in our country. You know. for many international students, coming to the United States and living here and studying can be a quite frightening experience, especially when finding housing. Can you give them some advice?
W: Sure. Fortunately, there are a variety of options that students can look to. They can choose to live on campus or off campus.
M: Then can you say something about on-campus living?
W: Well, I think first of all for first-time students, coming and living on campus in dormitories can provide a certain level of security because of its closeness to campus facilities, since commuting without a car can be quite an experience, especially when you have to commute long distances. Often in dormitories, meals might be provided, and this can allow students to devote time to their academics, rather than housekeeping.
M: That sounds quite good. Is there anything students should pay attention to when living on campus?
W: Yes, students should be aware that they'll be required in abide by certain regulations dealing with student conduct as part of the contract and living on campus.
M: Then what about off-campus living?
W: Like living in dormitories, uh, living off campus in an apartment requires little or no maintenance specifically because usually it is handled by someone else. Also, when you live off campus, there might be a certain amount of flexibility in choosing roommates that you might not have when living on campus. But you should be aware that tenants may be responsible for furnishing their own apartments.
M: Well, thank you, Ms. Smith, for the information you have provided for us.
W: My pleasure.

M: Hi, Veronica. What's going on?
W: Oh, my car's having problems again, but I don't have the time or the money to get it fixed.
M: Is it really bad?
W: It's starting to overheat whenever I'm idling or in heavy traffic, and two days ago I had to pull off the expressway and wait until the engine cooled down.
M: Have you taken it into a shop?
W: Well, I went to two different places yesterday; one mechanic said he'd check the coolant level and look for fluid leaks; the other guy said he thought it was the thermostat. I didn't leave the car with either of them, though, because I didn't have a ride back.
M: What are you going to do?
W: I really don't know. I'll have to figure out something; the bus service is terrible around where I five. Anyway, could I ask you for a favor?
M: Of course, what is it?
W: You know, tomorrow's Monday and we're supposed to turn in our homework in English, but I've only gotten halfway through it — I've just been too busy. If I came over, would you help me finish it?
M: Sure, I'll be here all evening. And actually I haven't finished the homework either; I've just been putting it off, so it's good you're coming over — I need someone to motivate me.
W: Thank you so much, Steve. It's so nice of you. See you later.

听力原文: Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gets answers, in the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.
For most of the time this conversation goes on below the level of consciousness. At times, however, we become aware of it. This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced, our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.
Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers.
There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that is to do not with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a process conversation as opposed to a content conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading. If we are an advanced reader our ability to hold a content conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed. It is precisely the process conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.
(33)
A.The reader has trouble understanding what the author says.
B.The reader's expectations agree with what is said in the text.
C.The reader asked questions and got answers.
D.The reader understands a text very well.

听力原文:W: Mr. Glieberman, do you see any change in high rate of broken marriages?
M: The divorce rate is beginning to level off and probably will begin to drop in the next year or two, though not significantly. The tightened economy has made it more difficult for troubled couples to handle all the costs associated with setting up separate households. Also, I believe there is a comeback of thought after the turbulent 60s and 70s that the family does have value. In the midst of change and family disintegration, people seem to have a greater desire now to create stability in their lives.
W: What is the divorce rate now?
M: About one in three marriages ends in divorce, a ratio far higher than it was twenty years ago when the philosophy was "we will tough it out no matter what." Society demands that for appearance's sake we stay together. Divorce no longer carries much disgrace. There is no way, for example, that Ronald Reagan, a divorced man, could have been elected president in 1960, And there are countless other divorced politicians who, years age, would have been voted out of office if they had even considered a divorce, let alone gotten one. The same was true in the corporate structure where divorced people rarely moved up the executive ladder. Now corporations welcome a divorced man because they can shift him around the country without worrying about relocating his family or making certain that they are happy.

same amount of time, say exercise researchers in Britain. But walks of any length beat sitting at home with your feet up and watching television. They stress. Some researchers in Britain reached these conclusions after putting 56 couch potatoes through an 18 week course of daily walks. They found that longer walks produce the most beneficial changes to the composition of blood fats, but walks of any length improve the fitness of the heart.
In the study, the normally inactive subjects were divided into three roughly equal groups. The "long walker" took a hike of between 20 and 40 minutes every day. "Intermediate walkers" had two rounds of jogging of 10 to 15 minutes, and "short walkers" did three stints of 90 to 110 minutes. The controls sat at home, as usual.
At the start and end of the 18 weeks, the health and fitness of each group were measured and it was found that the long walkers were healthiest, as measured by altered fat profiles in their blood. At the end, each liter of blood from the long walkers contained an average 0.05 grains less apolipoprotein(阿朴脂蛋白) II, a "bad" fat that is linked with heart disease. This was more than twice the drop seen in the intermediate walkers, and five times that in short walkers. In the controls, the level of this fat stayed the same. The drop in apolipoprotein II in the long walker was matched by a rise in the blood level of apolipoprotein I, a "good" fat that is associated with smooth arteries.
1、According to the researchers, ______ is least beneficial to your health.
A、taking a lengthy hike once a day
B、going shopping several times every day
C、doing jogging every morning
D、sitting in the sofa watching TV every evening
2、"Couch potato" in paragraph 2 is used to refer to a kind of ______.
A、farmers
B、vegetables
C、movie-goers
D、TV viewers
3、Which of the following statement is FALSE?()
A、Longer walks benefit our composition of blood fats
B、The subjects in the study all often watch TV
C、Only longer walks benefit our health
D、The subjects in the study may not like exercises
4、The subjects are divided into ______ groups.
A、four
B、three
C、two
D、one
5、Why is long walk beneficial to our heart?()
A、It leads to the drop in apolipoprotein I
B、It leads to the drop in apolipoprotein II
C、It keeps us from watching TV
D、It helps us lose weight

听力原文: You can tell the age of a tree by counting its tings. But these records of a tree's life really say a lot more. Scientists are using tree tings to learn what's been happening on the sun's surface for the last ten thousand years. Each ring represents a year of growth. As the tree grows, it adds a layer to its trunk, taking up chemical elements from the air. By looking at the elements in the rings from a given year, scientists can tell what elements were in the air that year.
Dr. Stevenson is analyzing one element, carbon—14, in rings from both living and dead trees. Some of the rings go back almost ten thousand years to the end of the Ice Age. When Stevenson followed the carbon--14 trail back in time, he found carbon—14 levels change with the intensity of solar burning. You see the sun has cycles. Sometimes it bums fiercely. At other times it's relatively calm. During the sun's violent periods, it throws off charged particles in fast moving streams, called solar winds. The particles interfere with the formation of carbon—14 on earth. When there is more solar wind activity, less carbon—14 is produced. Ten thousand years of tree rings show the carbon—14 level rises and falls about every four hundred and twenty years. The scientists concluded that solar wind activity must follow the same cycle.

A.To find out the origin of carbon- 14 on Earth.
B.To analyze the composition of different trees.
C.To look into the pattern of solar wind activity.
D.To examine the chemical elements in the Ice Age.
