Questions (1)to(5) are based on the following passage:What makes a person a scientist?

Questions (1)to(5) are based on the following passage:

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways ---or tools ---of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is no. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power saw is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further: he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works

The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the condition permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time mustwork under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was latter tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurement. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

(1)A sound scientific theory should be one that .

A) works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other times

B) leaves no room for improvement

C) does not allow any change even under different conditions

D) can be used for many purposes

(2)What, according to the passage, makes a scientist?

A) The tools he uses.

B) His ways of learning.

C) The way he uses his tools.

D) The various tools he uses.

(3) Albert Einstein built up his theory of relativity through .

A) investigation

B) experiments

C) tests

D) mathematics

(4)“…Knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone.” The author says this to show .

A) the importance of information

B) the importance of thinking

C) the difference between scientists and ordinary people

D) the difference between carpenters and ordinary people

(5) What is the main idea of the passage?

A) Scientists are different from ordinary people.

B) The theory of relativity.

C) Exactness is the core of science.

D) Exactness and way of using tools are the key to the making of a scientist.

Passage Four

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky.

If you say to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but …” what follows that “but” can render the apology ineffective: ” I had a bad day” or “your noise was giving me a headache ” leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior. in expecting an apology.

Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I’m sorry you’re upset” ; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.

Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. Saying “I’m useless as a parent” does not commit a person to any specific improvement.

These pseudo-apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness, Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not resort to these pseudo-apologies.

But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition, children still need help to become a ware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that raiding the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing a parent’s clothes without permission is not.

36.If a mother adds ”but” to an apology,________.

A.she doesn’t feel that she should have apologized

B.she does not realize that the child has been hurt

C.the child may find the apology easier to accept

D.the child may feel that he owes her an apology

听力原文: Your assignments this term will be to write two major research papers. One of the most important things about writing a research paper is giving proper credit of your resources of information. Failure to do this is called plagiarism which is a form. of intellectual dishonesty.

Plagiarism is a kind of stealing or at least an unauthorized borrowing of someone else's ideas. Sometimes inexperienced students will plagiarize unintentionally, and then be surprised when the teacher won't accept their papers, or gives them a failing grade.

The best way to avoid an unintentional plagiarizing is to be very careful in gathering your information. As you take notes on books and magazine articles about the topic you've selected, first try to assimilate the information thoroughly. Secondly, write it down in your own words. This is called paraphrasing. If you do a good job of paraphrasing, you'll capture the main idea from your source without actually using any phrases from it. Most of your notes should probably be paraphrases. However, occasionally you may find something you wish to quote directly in your research paper. In this case, be sure that you copy the quotation precisely in your notes and enclose it in quotation marks. That way when you're finalizing your research paper, you'll be able to remember which of your notes are direct quotes and which are your own summaries of the material. You can then incorporate them appropriately and give the original author proper credit.

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

32. What kind of assignment does the speaker discuss with the students?

33. What does the speaker warn the students not to do?

34. According to the speaker, how should most of the notes be taken?

35. How does the speaker say a direct quotation should be used?

(33)

A.Reading magazine articles.

B.Reviewing book reports.

C.Writing research papers.

D.Selecting information sources.

our family, but if you choose the wrong kind of dog, the consequences can cause you a lot of trouble. Families should sit down and thoroughly discuss the problems involved before buying a dog. Even if the children in your family are the ones who want the dogs, the parents are the ones who are really responsible for seeing that the animal is properly cared for. If you dont know much about dogs, its a good idea to go to the library or the ASPCA for books about various kinds of dogs, as well as books about how to train a puppy. When a book describes a dog as an ideal hunting dog, it probably means that the dog wont be happy living in a small apartment. Dog breeds vary in popularity as the years go by.
