听力原文: Many large cities are anything but beautiful. Streets are littered with trash. In this trash, however, there is still something that can be useful.

If people want to solve the problem of waste, there is no time to be lost. They must work out ways of making use of good things which are just thrown away as waste.

When a car gets too old, it may not run any more. But the metal that the car was made of is still good. It can be put to use again. When a bottle is empty, it goes out in the trash. But bottle glass can be ground into sand and used to pave streets.

Garbage from food can be changed into fertilizer. But first you have to fish out all the glass and metal.

Garbage can also be a good source for making building blocks, which are then covered with concrete. Now, more and more machines are designed for this purpose. Some day, people will watch films in a magnificent cinema which has been built out of garbage. Future buildings, roads, and cities may be made from garbage. But so far, building beautiful cities out of garbage is only a dream.

(33)

A.Garbage Can Be Changed into Fertilizer.

B.Overcoming the Problem of Waste.

C.Making Buildings with Garbage.

D.Large Cities Are Anything but Beautiful.

听力原文: The Europeans who left their homeland in the 18th and 19th centuries and settled their homes in North America are referred to as early settlers. Early settlers who came from the eastern parts of the present U.S.A. were used to having many trees around, so they found it rather hard to get used to living in a treeless plain like the state of Nebraska. When they first settled down in Nebraska, they needed large quantities of wood for building houses, making fires and doing many other things. Therefore they started many tree-planting plans that went on for years and years. Finally in 1872, a newspaperman named J. Sterling Morton had an idea: Why not have a special day set aside for planting trees. So Arbor Day was born on April 10th, 1872. The state government announced that it would give prizes to individuals and groups that planted the most trees. On that first day, more than 1,000,000 trees were planted in Nebraska. In this way Nebraska has been full of trees and it's green all the year around.

(33)

A.Who the early settlers were.

B.When the first Arbor Day began.

C.How the first Arbor Day came into being.

D.Who was J. Sterling Morton.

听力原文: Architecture is to building as literature is to the printed word. The best buildings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They then survive not only as beautiful objects, but as documents of the history of cultures. These achievements are never wholly the work of individuals. Architecture is a social art.

The revival of classical culture brought about an entirely new age, not only in philosophy and literature but in the visual arts as well. In architecture, the principles and styles of ancient Greece and Rome were brought back to life and reinterpreted. They remained dominant until the 20th century.

Many kinds of stone are used as building materials. Stone and marble were chosen for important monuments because they are not burnable and can be expected to endure. Stone architecture was often blended with stone sculpture. The use of stone has declined, however, because a number of other materials are more adaptable to industrial use.

The complexity of modern life calls for a variety of buildings. More people live in mass housing and go to work in large office buildings; they spend their income in large shopping centres, send their children to many different kinds of schools, and when they are sick they go to specialized hospitals and clinics. All these different types of buildings accumulated experiences needed by their designers.

By the middle of the 20th century, modern architecture, which was influenced by new technology and mass production, was dealing with increasingly complex social needs. Important characteristics of modern architectural works are expanses of glass and the use of reinforced concrete.

(30)

A.A government document.

B.A literary work.

C.A social art.

D.An individual's creation.

听力原文: London in the 17th century was very attractive, like many European cities of the time. There was a beautiful cathedral, St. Paul's, and a magnificent Town Hall, the Guildhall. Also, there were many attractive churches and important buildings. There was one large bridge across the River Thames, and on the south side of the river there were one or two theatres, including Shakespeare's theatre, the Globe.

However, the majority of the half a million inhabitants of the city lived in small houses in narrow, dirty streets. There were no drains, so people threw their dirty water and rubbish onto the street. Because of this, there was a strong smell and there were many rats and flies. In 1665, there was a great plague in the city of London. At least 70,000 people died and many others left London and went into the country for several months. Then slowly the plague died away and people started to return from the country.

On September 2, 1666 at about three o'clock in the morning, a fire suddenly started in a baker's shop in Pudding Lane. There was a strong wind and the fire spread quickly from one street to the next. The fire lasted for three days and destroyed 13,200 homes and 88 churches, including St. Paul's Cathedral, the Guildhall and many other important buildings. This was the end of the old city of London.

(33)

A.Near Town Hall.

B.In a narrow, dirty street.

C.Behind many attractive churches.

D.On the south side of the River Thames.

听力原文: Good morning and welcome to American studies 101. I would like to begin this semester by discussing the region of the United States known as the Northeast. This region includes twelve states and a small area called the District of Columbia that is the home of the national government.

The Northeast is a very important part of the United States, for although it covers only about six percent of the nation's geographical area, it contains approximately one-fourth of the country's population. New York, the most popular city in the United States, and several other large cities are located in this region.

Why are these twelve states so important? In the first place, the Northeast was one of the first sections of the country to be settled by Europeans. Busy cities developed there when most of America was still a sparsely settled wilderness. Many crucial events in the nation's early history took place there. I'll be describing some of those events Wednesday in my second lecture.

Today the Northeast is a great manufacturing and trading region. Thousands of factories produce a wide variety of goods and provide other regions of the country with items they need. Many large manufacturing firms have their central headquarters here. Some of the country's largest banks, investment agencies, and publishing houses are found in the Northeast. Several of its cities are noted for their fine museums. Some of the country's best known colleges and universities are also located in this region.

Finally the Northeast is the principal location for much of the country's international trade. In the heart of this region New York city is the home of the United Nations.

(33)

A.On the first day of class.

B.At the end of the first week of classes.

C.Halfway through the semester.

D.Just before the final examination.

听力原文: If you visit a big city anywhere in the world, you will probably find a restaurant which serves the food of your native country. Most large cities in the United States offer international sample of foods. Many people enjoy eating the food of other nations. This is probably one reason why there are so many different kinds of restaurants in the United States. A second reason is that many Americans come from other parts of the world. They enjoy tasting the foods of their native lands.

In the city of Detroit, for example, there are many people from western Europe, Greece, Latin America and the Far East. There are many restaurants in Detroit which serve the foods of these areas. There are many other international restaurants too. Americans enjoy the foods in these restaurants as well as the opportunity to better understand the people and their way of life. One of the most common international restaurants to be found in the United States is the Italian restaurant. The restaurant may be a small business run by a single family. The mother of the family cooks all of the dishes and the father and children serve the people who come to eat there. Or it may be a large restaurant owned by several different people who worked together in the business. Many Italian dishes that Americans enjoy are made with meats, tomatoes and cheese. They are very delicious and tasty.

(31)

A.Many foreign tourists visit the United States every year.

B.Americans enjoy eating out with their friends.

C.The United States is a country of immigrants.

D.Americans prefer foreign foods to their own food.
