听力原文: April Fool's Day is traditionally a day to play practical jokes on others, send people on fool's errands, and fool the unsuspecting. No one knows how this holiday began but it was thought to have originated in France. April Fool's Day is a "for-fun-only" observance. Nobody is expected to buy gifts or to take their "significant other" out to eat in a fancy restaurant. Nobody gets off work or school. It's simply a fun little holiday, but a holiday on which one must remain forever vigilant, for he may be the next April Fool!

Each country celebrates April Fool's differently. In France, the April Fool's is called "April Fish" (Poisson d'Avril). The French fool their friends by taping a paper fish to their friends' backs and when some discover this trick, they yell "Poisson d'Avril!".

In England, tricks can be played only in the morning. If a trick is played on you, you are a "noodle". In Scotland, April Fool's Day is 48 hours long and you are called an "April Gowk", which is another name for a cuckoo bird. The second day in Scotland's April Fool's is called Tally Day and is dedicated to pranks involving the buttocks. Tally Day's gift to posterior posterity is the still-hilarious "Kick Me" sign.

听力原文: Americans like to laugh and make jokes, especially practical jokes. These jokes, intended to trick or deceive people in some harmless way, and are always popular. In the United States and a few other countries the first day of April, April Fool's Day, is a day devoted to such harmless practical jokes and an excuse for every American to fool his friends and neighbors.

When I was a college student, our daily college newspaper, which was read by most of the people who lived in the city near the college as well as by students, always had a special April Fool's Edition. One year the paper said that a beautiful park in the center of the campus was to be turned into a parking lot.

Another year the paper falsely reported that a Russian submarine had been seen in the lake which is on the campus. It was surprising that many people believed these stories. But probably the most successful practical being invaded by people from Mars. His description of this invasion from outer space was so realistic that he caused a panic and was actualy responsible for the deaths of several people.

听力原文:M: Next month you're going to celebrate Thanksgiving Day. When is it? I often get
confused about it.

W: It is supposed to be the fourth Thursday of November.

M: So, let's see ... it will be November 23 this year. What are you going to do that day?

W: I will be home with my family, of course.

M: To thank God for a good harvest like the earlier settlers did centuries ago?

W: Oh, that's history. True, every year we still tell our school kids the story of that famous Pilgrim feast. but for most of us, it's just time for family reunions.

M: You usually eat roast turkey and potatoes for dinner. That's what I've read.

W: Yes, and a lot of other things. It's always a huge meal. That's the tradition we still keep after so many years.

M: Sounds like our Mid-Autumn Festival. In the evening, the whole family gathers together to enjoy the bright moon while eating mooncakes.

W: Do you celebrate Christmas in China?

M: No, we don't. We have our own Chinese New Year. We call it Spring Festival. How do you celebrate Christmas?

W: Besides Christmas dinner, we attend Church service and sing Christmas carols. Children hang their stockings near their beds or in the living room so that Santa Claus can fill them with candy and toys.

M: I know you have many other holidays.

听力原文:William Shakespeare was christened in the market town of Stratford on Avon, Warwi

听力原文: William Shakespeare was christened in the market town of Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, on April 26, 1564. Traditionally, his actual birthday was three days earlier, on St. George's day, the same day as his death fifty-two years later. His father. John, was a respected middle-class trader, and his mother. Mary Arden. came from a family of local landowners. It seems probable that young William received a fair education (for his day) at the local Grammar School. At the age of eighteen he married a girl eight years older than himself. Anne Hathaway, who gave him a child the following year and twins in 1585. Little else is known of his early life, and so we cannot tell what made him decide to leave Stratford in 1586 for London. where he stayed until 1611. In London, he must soon have attracted attention. because by 1592 he was a popular enough writer and actor to be laughed at by an older dramatist as an uneducated lack-of-all-trades. He was mentioned as being among the principal actors of the city as early as 1598. and we find that in 1599 he was a member of the company running the Globe Theater, with one-tenth interest in the profits—showing a business sense rarely seen in his fellow writers. His popularity is indicated by the fact that not only were his own plays published under his name. which was a rare procedure in his day, but also plays by others are to be found attributed to him. as if to indicate that his name alone would promise a good sale.

(33)

A.On April 26,1611.

B.On April 23,1611.

C.On April 26,1616.

D.On April 23,1616,

听力原文:American scientists are developing maps that can identify areas of future floodin

听力原文: American scientists are developing maps that can identify areas of future flooding. The maps also may help scientists estimate the possibility of extremely dry weather and severe storms.

Tom Jackson of the United States Department of Agriculture prepared the map after the April flood. He used information provided by satellites in Earth orbit.

The maps are produced from dish receivers on the satellites. Each dish receiver measures the wetness of the soil by capturing the natural release of microwave radiation from the soil. The receivers turn rapidly. This provides complete coverage of each area the satellite passes over.

Mr. Jackson and other scientists have tested Aqua's equipment in airplanes and satellites flying over several states. The scientists used the tests to develop ways to change the information gathered into maps.

Mr. Jackson now plans to compare the microwave dish receiver findings with information from tests on Earth's soil. He will use instruments at Agricultural Research Service centers in four states. He also will study information provided by forty ground observation centers across the country.

(30)

A.To estimate the extreme weather.

B.To develop the satellite technology.

C.To improve agricultural output.

D.To learn how to change information to maps more efficiently.

听力原文:The Europeans who left their homeland in the 18th and 19th centuries and settled

听力原文: The Europeans who left their homeland in the 18th and 19th centuries and settled their homes in North America are referred to as early settlers. Early settlers who came from the eastern parts of the present U.S.A. were used to having many trees around, so they found it rather hard to get used to living in a treeless plain like the state of Nebraska. When they first settled down in Nebraska, they needed large quantities of wood for building houses, making fires and doing many other things. Therefore they started many tree-planting plans that went on for years and years. Finally in 1872, a newspaperman named J. Sterling Morton had an idea: Why not have a special day set aside for planting trees. So Arbor Day was born on April 10th, 1872. The state government announced that it would give prizes to individuals and groups that planted the most trees. On that first day, more than 1,000,000 trees were planted in Nebraska. In this way Nebraska has been full of trees and it's green all the year around.

(33)

A.Who the early settlers were.

B.When the first Arbor Day began.

C.How the first Arbor Day came into being.

D.Who was J. Sterling Morton.

听力原文: My friend, Vernon Davies, kept birds. One day he phoned and told me he was going away for a week. He asked me to feed the birds for him and said that he would leave the key to his front door in my mailbox.

Unfortunately, I forgot all about the birds until the night before Vernon was going to return. What was worse, it was already dark when I arrived at his house. I soon found the key Vernon gave me could not unlock either the front or the back door. I was getting desperate. I kept thinking of what Vernon would say when he came back.

I was just going to give up when I noticed that one bedroom window was slightly open. I found a barrel and pushed it under the window. As the barrel was very heavy, I made a lot of noise. But in the end, I managed to climb up and open the window.

I actually had one leg inside the bedroom when I suddenly realized that someone was shining a torch up at me. I looked down and saw a policeman and an old lady, one of Vernon's neighbors. "What are you doing up there?" said the policeman. Feeling like a complete fool, I replied, "I was just going to feed Mr. Davies's birds."

(4)

A.His friend might have given him the wrong key.

B.He didn't know where the back door was.

C.He couldn't find the key in the mailbox.

D.It was too dark to put the key in the lock.
