听力原文:For those of you who were born in the year of the pig, good luck and much success

听力原文: For those of you who were born in the year of the pig, good luck and much success! This is your year.

When talking to a Westerner, however, you've got to be a little careful when you talk about pigs. Chinese people view the pig as a smart and lucky animal. Western ideas tend to be a little more negative.

A pig in the West is seen as a dirty, lazy, and fat animal. If anyone ever called you a pig, you wouldn't be smiling. When a person doesn't like someone, sometimes he will call that person a pig.

If you ever meet a Westerner who was born in the year of the pig, don't say "Oh, you're a pig!" Most Westerners will be understanding. They will be sure that you made some kind of a mistake. However, don't take any chances. You might just offend someone who does not share your positive ideas about pigs.

(30)

A.Because they worship pigs best of all.

B.Because they consider pigs as bad animals.

C.Because they aren't used to talking about pigs.

D.Because they don' t like the topic about pigs at all.

第2题

听力原文: The most important message that humans deliver to one another often comes in jus
t three words. Think of "I love you" or "There's no charge". One of the phrases that I found most useful is this, "I'll be there". "I'll be there", and if you ever have to call a plumber over the weekend you know how good these words can feel. If you heard them after having car trouble on the road and used a last coin to call a friend, you know the feeling too. "Grandma, I'm graduating in June." "I'll be there." "Fanny, I'm stuck in the office and can't get to the airport to meet my sister." "I'll be there." "Mum, the baby cries all night, and if I don't get some sleep I will perish." "I'll be there."

One person who really knows how to be there is Elizabeth, the queen mother of England. During the air attack on London in 1940, she was asked whether the little princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose would leave London for their safety. The Queen replied "The children would not leave unless I do. I shall not leave unless their father does." The Queen would not leave the country at any circumstances however. "I'll be there."

Another three-word phrase is one of the hardest to learn to say. It's "Maybe you're right". If more people would say "Maybe you're right", the marriage conciliators would go out of business. I know from experience it can have a charming effect in an argument.

(30)

A.They can be used to do business with people.

B.They can be used to express all kinds of feelings.

C.They can be used to deliver all the messages in our life.

D.They can be used to convey our most important messages to people.

W: Oh, right. Mr. Smith. Nice to meet you.

M: Same here.

W: Come on in. Let me show you the place. Isn't it something? Spacious, bright, clean. Have you ever seen such a bright, sunny apartment?

M: No, I haven't.

W: This is the kitchen. Everything is brand new. New fridge, new gas stove, new sink.

M: It's beautiful, really. How's the hot water in this place? I'm asking because where we live now we keep running out of hot water. I can't tell you how many cold showers I've had to take. l can't stand taking cold showers.

W: Don't worry. You can shower to your heart's content here. This is the bedroom. Quite large, don't you think?

M: Have you painted it recently? I mean, the walls look a little dingy.

W: Sir, the color is offwhite. We painted the whole apartment just last week.

M: Oh, sorry. Guess my eyes are going. What's the rent?

W: The rent is $500 per month.

M: Does that include utilities?

听力原文:W: Hi, Jack, have you finished Professor Smith's assignment?

M: The assignment? No, not yet.

W: But tomorrow's the deadline.

M: Anna, take it easy. I can always pull it together in no time.

W: Hey, don't you think playing PC games takes up too much of your time?

M: Oh, computer games represent the latest technology. You can't simply ignore them.

W: I know. You can play as much as you like during the holiday, but not now. It's affecting your studies.

M: It's not. I feel I'm getting smarter day by day, and my reaction time is much quicker.

W: You only become alive and alert at those war games. In class, I saw you doze off.

M: It's not my fault. The textbooks are boring and the lectures are tedious. I dislike those teachers who love to call the roll. But the games are interesting, challenging and can broaden my mind as well.

W: I didn't say the games are all bad, but you can't play games all the time. Have you ever considered what you will do if you fail the exams?

M: well…

W: I know it's not easy to resist the temptation, but self-discipline is essential to one's success. It's part of one's character. Look at yourself in the mirror. You look pale and haggard. See, you have nothing but half a life.

M: Really? Oh, heavens!

听力原文:W: Mike! Long time no see. What's up?

M: Hey, Lydia. Fancy meeting you here. Are you keeping busy?

W: A little bit. Well, someone told me you've got bunches of good stamps, like a museum.

M: I do have a lot. I'm interested in stamp collecting. I guess it's actually a part of my life.

W: They cost a lot though. How can you afford them?

M: Sometimes I do have hard time with them. I've to save every penny. But it's worthy. And, when big days such as my birthday or Christmas come, most of my friends give me stamps as gifts.

W: That's good. Stamp collecting is also a long-term investment. The price keeps going up. You can earn a lot by bringing them to the market.

M: I'm afraid not. For me, stamp collecting is merely a bobby, a personal fondness. I'd be sad if I'd ever have to sell them.

W: I can imagine. Keeping a hobby is like having a friend, both enjoyable and rewarding. You get great pleasure by attending them.

M: I couldn't agree more.

W: By the way, have you ever been to other countries?

M: Not yet.

W: Then how do those foreign stamps come from?

M: Well, I've some friends studying abroad. They send me some at times.

W: I see. My friends travel a lot every year. Lf you like I could ask them to help you with that.

M: That would be too good if it's not trouble for them.

W: Not at all.

M: Now, I'm heading for the post office. I heard a new set of stamps is for sale for the World Cup. Do you have interest to go with me?

W: I'd love to. But I've to meet my friend at 4 o'clock at the airport. He's coming back for vacation. Anyway, I'll call you later.

M: All right. Then see you soon.

W: See you.

(20)

A.Because he has enough money to buy stamps.

B.Because he used to receive stamps as gifts.

C.Because stamp collecting is his hobby.

D.Because he invests in stamps.

听力原文:M: Well, you've asked a rather strange person a pretty standard question. I happe
ned to be doing language for my A level at school, and I decided that I didn't think there was a great deal of future in the study of languages, so I decided that I'd change over to some scientific subject that I felt might be useful. And after a great deal of difficulty, got accepted at a medical school, found it very difficult to get going, but eventually succeeded and perfectly happy.

W: So you mean eventually you went into...er...medical school or university without any A levels

in scientific subjects.

M: That's right. The first morning the lecturer wrote up some chemical formula on the board, which was the first chemistry lecture I bad ever been to. As far as I was concerned, she might have been putting it up in Egyptian hieroglyphics. It didn't mean a thing. So that was a long time ago.

W: So you had a lot of...sort of...personal individual work to do to catch up with everyone else then.

M: Yes, it was very hard, but the university I was at, which was Sheffield, had a kind of special class for what you might call "lame ducks" such as myself. And there was a retired watchmaker. There was a dentist. There were a couple of nurses—people who had come to do medicine in later life having taken up other things. So I think they looked after themselves well and most of us in the end managed to get through.

W: And you eventually qualified?

M: Yes, when I qualified in Sheffield way back in 1960, I was then actually so interested in the general aspects of medicine that I joined a special practice at the University of Manchester that was teaching medical students, and being involved very closely with the academic side of medical practice, and from then on went on to student health service work back in my former University of Sheffield and then came down here to reading twelve years ago.

第9题

A new era is upon us. Call it what you will: the service economy, the information age, the
knowledge society. It all translated to a fundamental change in the way we work. Already we're partly there. The percentage of people who earn their living by making things has fallen dramatically in the Western World. Today the majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan (two thirds or more in many of these countries) are in the service industry, and the number is on the rise. More women are in the work force than ever before. There are more part-time jobs. More people are self-employed. But the breadth of the economic transformation can't be measured by numbers alone, because it also is giving rise to a radical new way of thinking about the nature of work itself. Long-held notions about jobs and careers, the skills needed to succeed, even the relation between individuals and employers—all these are being changed.

We have only to look behind us to get some sense of what may lie ahead. No one looking ahead 20 years possibly could have foreseen the ways in which a single invention, the chip (芯片), would transform. our world thanks to its applications in personal computers, digital communications and factory robots. Tomorrow's achievements in biotechnology, artificial intelligence or even some still unimagined technology could produce a similar wave of dramatic changes. But one thing is certain: information and knowledge will become even more vital, and the people who possess it, whether they work in manufacturing or services, will have the advantage and produce the wealth. Computer knowledge will become as a basic requirement as the ability to read and write. The ability to solve problems by applying information instead of performing routine tasks will be above all else. If you cast your mind ahead 10 years, information services will be predominant. It will be the way you do your job.

A characteristic of the information age is that ______.

A.the service industry is relying more and more on the female work force

B.manufacturing industries are steadily increasing

C.people find it harder to earn a living by working in factories

D.most of the job opportunities can now be found in service industry
