While rest and relaxation are a must in living a 37 life, its not what we were created to do. After all, the Master Creator took his R&R (Rest and Recreation) on the seventh day, only after six days of "definitely directed thought". Wallace D. Wattles wrote, "There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and 38 thought; it is the hardest work in the world. M: Hi, Jane. I'm thinking about a problem. (19) You know recently I have read about a book naming Setting Life Goal. I am deeply touched by it.

W: Really? What is this book about?

M: You know Jerry White?

W: Yes. I know something about him.

M: He is so great that he always succeeds in whatever he does. Do you know why he is so successful?

W: Sorry, and why?

M: He succeeds because he has the definite life goals.

W: I see. But what kind of goal will be the intermediate goal?

M: It relates to the outcomes during the next few years.

W: Then the third one...

M: It is a short-term goal, which involves outcomes expected during the next twelve months. (22) This goal helps with achievement of intermediate goals,

W: Great! Goals actually are important for the different stages of our life. And now I must work out what are the life goals of mine.

听力原文: As the new sales director for a national computer firm, Alex Gordon was looking forward to his first meeting with the company's district managers. Everyone arrived on time, and Alex's presentation went extremely well. He decided to end the meeting with the conversation about the importance of the district managers to the company's plans. "I believe we are going to continue to increase our share of the market," he began, "because of the quality of the people in this room. The district manager is the key to the success of the sales representatives in his district. He sets the term for everyone else. If he has ambitious goals and is willing to put in long hours, everyone in his unit will follow his example." When Alex was finished, he received polite applauses, but hardly the warm response he had hoped for. Later he spoke with one of the senior managers. "Things were going so well until the end", Alex said disappointedly. "Obviously, I said the wrong thing." "Yes", the district manager replied. "Half of our managers are women. Most have worked their way up from sales representatives, and they are very proud of the role they played in the company's growth. They don't care at all about political correctness. But they were definitely surprised and distressed to be referred to as 'he' in your speech. "

Who did Alex Gordon speak to at the first meeting?

A.District managers.

B.Regular customers.

One year later, Joey would jump right in and nun as most children do during play. We never told him that he probably wouldn't be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn't know.

In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn't tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn't know.

He continued to run four to five miles a day. Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. (31)He was in seventh grade, while the other six team members were all eighth-graders. We never told him he shouldn't expect to make the team. 听力原文: In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The "spiderstory" is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times to span the gap. On the seventh time, he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English.

Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often. He replied,

"Failure? 1 have no failures. Now, I know 50,000 ways that it won' t work."

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form. yourself? What can you change so that things may go right next time?

Second, is the goal you're trying to reach the right one? Try to do some titivating about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, "If I do succeed in this, where will it gel me?" This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn' t be doing anyway.

The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to live with yourself even though you may have failed. Remember, you can't win them all .

(33)

A.Failure and success.

B.The "spider-story".

C.Two sides of failure.

D.The invention of the light bulb.

第6题

Evaluating employee performance is a key area of management skills. The challenge is to gi
ve the employees an accurate picture of their accomplishments, and of the areas in which they need to improve. Both are important, accomplishments because they give the employee a sense of pride in the work and a basis on which to build future achievements, and areas for improvement, because they give the employee some goal to reach for.

Often, employees fear that the evaluation will be a negative experience, This fear alone can result in defensiveness and tension, Tile manager must take pains to lessen the employees fear and make the evaluation a participatory(参与的)event. An employee who contributes ideas to his or her evaluation will be much more likely to agree with the outcome and be willing to follow the suggestions.

The employee evaluation system is to improve employee performance. While area8 needing improvement must be reviewed, this should always be done in the spirit of discovering goals the employee can work toward. This holds true for reviewing successes as well. While praise for past achievements may be used as a reward, at the time of the evaluation, the primary reason to look at the persons success is to determine areas in which he or she can continue to excel(擅长).

Perhaps the most effective way to make the evaluation a participatory event is to ask the employee to come prepared to the meeting. The employer and employee each should carefully review the job description prior to the evaluation meeting and should make notes on areas in which the employee had difficulty or has made a contribution. It is important that these notes be specific; "Does a good job" is not nearly as meaningful as "Increased productivity(生产率)by 35%".

Both parties should also draw up a short list of goals for the employee to achieve during the next evaluation period. Ideally, these goals should build upon the known strengths and successes of the employee. However, areas needing improvement must also be addressed.

According to the passage, employees being evaluated _________.

A.are often those who have newly obtained the job

B.often feel fearful and anxious

C.often have the feeling of being looked down upon

D.are often proud and confident
