听力原文: To quickly review the main points covered in Chapter 1, the most important part of sports is its influence and popularity among people from different walks of life throughout the world. Then what is the case here? Well, if you judge by the number of people who go to see the games and by the number of those who actually play it, basketball is probably the most popular sport in the U.S. It is mainly an indoor game, and the season extends from late fall, through the winter, to early spring. There are many professional teams, but for the most part basketball is a school sport. There is hardly a high school or college in the country that does not have its team and its loyal fans.

In spring and summer, the most popular sport is base-ball. During the warm weather, you can see young men and boys playing this game in many parts of the country. Radio and television bring the details of the big games to every corner of the land, and the activities of the professional teams are a topic of conversation for Americans everywhere.

In the fall, the most popular sport is football. As you know, this is not the same kind of game that is so popular in other parts of the world. Like basketball and baseball, it is typically American, and those who have never seen it before have difficulty seeing any sense in it. But for most of the spectators the game itself is not so important as the music, the cheering, and the festive spirit that go with it. On a cool bright autumn afternoon, there is nothing so colorful and exciting as a football game.

听力原文: Do you like to eat quickly? Do you like inexpensive food? Some people go to fast-food restaurants for these reasons. In the past, people usually went to diners for these reasons. In fact, many people in the States still go to diners today for the same reasons.

A man named Walter Scott had the first “diner” in 1872. It wasn't really a diner. It was only a food cart. People on the street walked up to the cart to buy food. These carts served late-night workers who wanted a cup of coffee and a late-night meal. The meal was a sandwich or boiled eggs. In 1887, Samuel Jones built the first diner big enough to allow the customers to come in and sit down on stools while they ate.

Before long, many diners stayed open around the clock. In other words, people were able to eat in a diner at any time. Diners changed in other ways, too. The original menu of sandwiches and coffee became bigger. It included soup, favorite dishes, and a breakfast menu. In addition, diners soon became permanent buildings. They were no longer carts on wheels.

Diners today look similar to the diners of the early 1900s. They are usually buildings with large windows. Inside, the diners have shining counters with stools, booths, and tables and chairs. People can eat all three meals in a modern diner.

Today, many people eat in fast-food restaurants such as McDonald's and Burger King. However, the diner remains an American tradition, and thousands of people still enjoy eating there. It was popular a century ago, and it is stir popular today.

(30)

A.Only breakfast.

B.Only lunch.

C.Only night-meals.

D.All of the above.

听力原文: Most summer school courses in Britain last for two to four weeks. During that time the students live either with a British family, or at the school, or in a hotel. They have about 15 hours of lessons every Monday to Friday--usually in the morning. Each school has a lot of different courses. Some are for beginners and others are for intermediate or advanced students. The lessons are time the classes are small and the teachers are all from English-speaking countries.

But summer school students don't just speak English in the classroom. They are in Britain, so they speak and read and hear it outside too. That's why they learn so quickly and why a summer school course is really a holiday. Only one third of each course is taught in the classroom. The rest takes place during a busy afternoon and evening timetable of visits, sports and games. These activities help everyone to make new friends, have fun and improve their English.

(23)

A.Courses in British history.

B.Language courses.

C.Courses in sports.
