听力原文: Play is the principal business of children, and more and more in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy, every child needs an opportunity and the right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main function is to suggest, encourage and assist play. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child's development.

In recent years research on infant development has shown the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities, is largely determined in the first three years of his life. so a baby's ability to profit from the right play materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged and stimulated, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully.

The next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toy should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability. Bricks and construction toy; painting and make things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play; the first social games for learning to play and get on with others.

By the third stage of play development—from five to seven or eight years the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier now to see which type of toys the child most enjoys.

(33)

A.They can suggest and assist children's play.

B.They can give children opportunities to play things.

C.They can make children excited.

D.They can prevent children from crying.

听力原文: Social insects live in integrated communities which in some ways are similar to human communities. In both types of community there is division of labor. In insect societies, certain insects are responsible for reproduction; the workers collect food While the soldiers defend the colony. In the same way human groups such as farmers and shopkeepers have specialized functions in producing goods and providing services to the community.

Insect and human societies are also alike in that individual members of the community work together. White ant workers coordinate their efforts to build nests. Similarly, in human societies, engineers, architects, town planners and construction workers unite to build cities.

The nests of social insects are as complex as a man-made city. In some insect nests special accommodation is provided for the young and for food storage. Many nests also have devices for regulating the temperature. So insect nests are as functional as human houses.

It is not surprising, therefore, that many analogies have been made between social insects and human societies. It must not be forgotten, however, that insects' social behaviors are determined by innate instinctive mechanisms. Insects show no capacity for learning or for developing a social tradition based on learning.

(35)

A.They both live in communities.

B.They both have soldiers to defend their societies.

C.They both show great capacity for learning.

D.They both have a division of labor.

Experts in education and gerontology(老人医学) say that the number of retired Americans who are spending time—or planning to—on educational pursuits is growing fast. The trend is driven by such factors as increased longevity, people enjoying more years of good health, and a growing realization by many that a retirement into passivity is not only boring but can lead to atrophy(萎缩) of both mind and body. The federal government estimated in 2001 that additional life expectancy for a 65-year-old was 16.4 years for men and 19.4 years for women. That's a lot of time to fill if you're not working and in good health.

Certainly, educational opportunities aimed at the 65-and-older set aren't new. The first" lifelong learning institute" targeted specifically at retirees opened in 1962 at the New School for Social Research in New York, and there are many others that have been around for two decades or more. What's new is the tremendous variety of learning opportunities and places available for those who approach retirement. The options range from one-shot lectures, discussion classes, or day trips organized by a local college or retirement home.

Educational travel is appealing because it combines the exploration of a new place with deepening your understanding of its history, geology, or literature. For those who prefer to stay close to home, many campus-based pro grams are available that offer a college-level curriculum but don't have grades or tests. Perhaps the ultimate commitment to lifelong learning is moving into a retirement community affiliated with an educational institution. For folks who like the idea of living in a campus environment, several retirement villages are built near campuses in Ohio, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. The programs give residents' access to campus activities, al low them to attend or teach classes, as well as work on joint-research projects with undergrads, graduates, or faculty.

In our shorter-lived-parents' generation, people were often satisfied to define retirement in terms of what they weren't doing—namely, working. But with the possibility of 20 or more years ahead after leaving your primary job or profession, you owe it to yourself to find a positive, enjoyable way to spend your time. Continuing education might be the answer. Not only do you not have to take tests or pull an all-nighter to struggle for a good grade, you can study any topic you want, almost anywhere in the world—and on your own schedule.

More Americans are taking up education after retirements partly because ______.

A.they want to learn what they have no time to learn before retirement

B.they retire at an earlier age with more years left to learn

C.they are more wealthy to afford to continue the education

D.they find learning is a good way to fight against the process of aging
