The Mystery of the MayasThe ruins of once-beautiful cities in the forests of Central Ameri

The Mystery of the Mayas

The ruins of once-beautiful cities in the forests of Central America tell scientists much about the amazing people who built them. But they do not tell why these cities were suddenly abandoned over one thousand years ago. Around A. D. 800, something mysterious happened to the Mayan civilization. Walls and foundations for new buildings were left unfinished. To modern archeologists, it looked as if the cities had been abandoned. What happened? What is the possible explanation of this mystery?

Early Discoveries

In the late 1700's, a group of explorers cutting their way through a forest in Central America came upon the ruins of an ancient city. Under a tangle of trees and vines, they found large, well-de- signed stone buildings and handsome stone monuments. Some of the stones were covered with a strange kind of writing. Carvings on other stones showed that at least some of the people who lived in the area long before were highly advanced.

Questions Raised

In the next 150 years, more cities were discovered. They seemed to be part of a great civilization stretching across 500 miles (about 800 kilometers) of forest. In 1881, an Englishman named Alfred Maudslay led the first big scientific expedition to study the ruins in the forest. Maudslay was an archeologist, a scientist who studies the remains of ancient communities for clues to how the people lived. Other expeditions followed, but at first they found more questions than answers: Who built the cities, and when the cities were built? How had the people lived here in the middle of a rain forest? Most puzzling of all, what happened to them?

Possible Answers

Gradually, some of the answers have been pieced together. Today, living in parts of Mexico and Guatemala, there are brown skinned Indian people called the Mayas. Scientists believe that the ancestors of these Indians built the cities and carved the stone monuments.

Dates carved on some monuments show that they were put up between A. D. 300 and 800, but bits of buried pottery tell us that the Mayas had lived in some of their cities for hundreds of years earlier. At the height of Mayan civilization, there must have been over two million people living in and around hundreds of beautiful towns and cities.

Archeologists digging in these cities have uncovered roads, a few water reservoirs, and temples built one on top of another. Handsome pictures made of sculptured plaster and painted in bright colors were found on the walls of buildings. Painted pots and pieces of carefully carved jewelry were discovered in tombs under the floors of temples. These pictures and objects showed much about the Mayas' life. There were scenes of people working, people at war, nobles holding court, priests in fantastic costumes, and Mayan gods.

Possible Errors

For a long time, archeologists worked only on uncovering large Mayan structures, such as temples, palaces, and ball courts. Little effort was made to find the remains of smaller buildings, such as houses. The seeming absence of houses led people to believe that the cities were only the homes of priests and rulers, who lived in the palaces. They thought the ordinary people probably lived in the countryside and came to the cities only for religious ceremonies.

New Evidence

In recent years, new evidence has been uncovered at a number of Mayan cities by different groups of archeologists. The University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia has just finished a twelve-year study of Tikal, the biggest of the Mayan cities. More than one hundred small houses varied, too. Some had many remains of finely decorated pottery. Others had fewer and plainer pieces. The houses were very close together, with little space to raise food, except in small gardens. Change of View

M: Some of these books aren't so old though. See? This Mystery was published only six years ago: It cost 75 cents. You can't beat that.

W: Hey, look at this!

M: What! Are you getting interested in 19th century poetry all of a sudden?

M: Everything on that shelf is worth 50 cents.

W: But if this is the signature of someone who is well known, it might bring a lot more. I hear Shakespeare's signature is worth about a million dollars.

M: Oh? I can hardly read what that one says. Who wrote it?

W: The name looks like "Harold Dobson." Maybe "Dobbins"? Wasn't he a politician or something? I'm going to buy this book and see if I can find a name like that in the library.

M: Good luck. Your poetry book may make you rich, but I'll bet my 75-cent Mystery is a good buy.

听力原文: One of the greatest mysteries of nature is the instinct to migrate. Every year, millions of creatures feel the need to migrate and most people have seen the arrival or departure of migrating flocks of birds. In England, for example, we always know when Autumn is coming, because flocks of swallows sit on the telegraph wires. Migration is not only seen in birds but also in reptiles, for example, turtles, frogs and toads. Insects, such as locusts and butterflies; fish, such as eel, salmon and tunas and mammals, such as reindeer, seals, lemmings, whales and bats. Many of these creatures can find their way over long distances. And how they do it is a mystery and a wonder to everyone, especially for those of us who have difficulty even reading a map covering 100 miles. There are several suggestions about how they navigate. Firstly, it is suggested, they navigate by using stars and planets for guidance. Secondly, some people think that these migrating mammals find their way by following the pole of the earth's magnetic field. Thirdly some people think that migrating birds, insects and animals follow a certain smell or scent. Fourthly, another group of people believe that animals migrate by recognizing geographical features. Fifthly, some people think that animals migrate by following changes in temperature. And finally, there are people who suppose they migrate by following sound.

(30)

A.The weather gets hotter.

B.Telegraph wires stand still.

C.Swallows sit on telegraph wires.

D.People find the mystery of migration

M: I'm watching TV.

W: You're always watching TV. Stop being such a couch potato! Get up and let's do something.

M: I am doing something. I’ m watching TV.

W: You're always watching some stupid sitcom. It's a waste of time, and a waste of brain power.

M: Sometimes it's nice just to kick back, relax and laugh a little. There is nothing wrong with a little comedy in one's life. In fact, that's why I'm here.

W: Ha, ha! Very funny!

M: Besides, I am watching something serious.

W: What? I bet it's some ridiculous drama with perfect looking people complaining about the tribulations of daily life.

M: Nope, wrong again.

W: Then it must be a prime-time news program describing how some woman went crazy and killed her husband.

M: No, I watched that last night. You had better guess quickly--the commercials are almost over.

W: Is it a murder mystery? Or some science fiction show like Star Trek?

M: No.

W: A game show where they test your knowledge of useless trivia?

M: No, it's a documentary on dolphins in the Caribbean.

听力原文:W: What did you think of the movie? Did you like it?

M: Net molly, it was a little too artsy for me. It seemed like the director was trying so hard to impress us with strange close-ups and avant-garde dialogues that he forgot to include a story. I thought it was really boring.

W: I thought the movie was really thought-provoking, I love it when a movie makes you think. It's a nice change from the superficial dialogue and two-dimensional characters you usually see in films these days.

M: I don't really care for alternative films. They are so dark and depressing. The characters are always so intense. Why does a movie have to be sad to be deep?

W: Yeah, I know what you mean, but mainstream cinema is nothing but gun fights and exploding cars. I get so sick of movies like that. I prefer movies with substance.

M: But sometimes you don't want to think; sometimes you just want a light movie. Like that comedy movie with Billy Crystal—that was so hilarious. I laughed so hard that I cried.

W: Movies have to be more than entertaining to me.

M: Did you see that new mystery movie that came out last month? That was so suspenseful. 1 was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

W: I loved that movie. The plot was great, and the acting was incredible. I wouldn't be surprised if it were nominated for an Academy Award.

M: Well. at least we agree on something. I guess we'll have to stick to mysteries in the future.

(23)

A.The close-ups are perfect.

B.The dialogues are easy to understand.

C.It's not boring at all.

D.It doesn't tell any story.
