听力原文:W: Hello, Steve?

M: Hi, Veronica. What's going on?

W: Oh, my car's having problems again, but I don't have the time or the money to get it fixed.

M: Is it really bad?

W: It's starting to overheat whenever I'm idling or in heavy traffic, and two days ago I had to pull off the expressway and wait until the engine cooled down.

M: Have you taken it into a shop?

W: Well, I went to two different places yesterday; one mechanic said he'd check the coolant level and look for fluid leaks; the other guy said he thought it was the thermostat. I didn't leave the car with either of them, though, because I didn't have a ride back.

M: What are you going to do?

W: I really don't know. I'll have to figure out something; the bus service is terrible around where I five. Anyway, could I ask you for a favor?

M: Of course, what is it?

W: You know, tomorrow's Monday and we're supposed to turn in our homework in English, but I've only gotten halfway through it — I've just been too busy. If I came over, would you help me finish it?

M: Sure, I'll be here all evening. And actually I haven't finished the homework either; I've just been putting it off, so it's good you're coming over — I need someone to motivate me.

W: Thank you so much, Steve. It's so nice of you. See you later.

King was born on January 15, 1929. in Atlanta, Georgia. When he was young, he was strongly influenced by Thoreau and Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of non-violent resistance. Having received a Ph. D (Doctor of Philosophy) from Boston University, he became a political and religious leader of the non-violent civil rights movement in 1955. Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attracti
ve people are happier and healthier, have better marriage and have more respectable occupations. Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants (被告). But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.

Handsome male executive were perceived as having more integrity than plainer men; effort and ability we thought to account for their success.

Attractive female executive were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones; their success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executive were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than was that of attractive overnight successes.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is perceived to be more feminine and an attractive man more masculine than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine position appears to lack the "masculine" qualities required.

This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men, but the women who had been ranked most attractive invariably received the fewest votes.

The word "liability" (Line 4, Para. i) most probably means"

听力原文: After a generation of no-fault divorce in America, law-makers in some states are being asked to make it harder to end a marriage when one spouse does not want to call it off. Proposals in several states to make contested divorces harder to obtain are supported by conservative groups seeking to promote their concept of family values. These proposals would go back to, in contested cases, the old requirement that one spouse should show the other was "at fault", such as being unfaithful, abusive, a drug user or someone who deserts the marriage. That would be a big shift from current divorce laws.

The no-fault divorce law has been enacted throughout America since California put the first one on the books in 1970. Under such laws, someone can get a divorce on grounds that the marriage has broken down without having to claim wrongdoing by the other spouse. No-fault divorces can be obtained even if one spouse does not agree to dissolve the marriage.

However, many lawyers who specialize in divorce think returning to a fault requirement is a bad idea even though such a change might boost business for them. They think it would only intensify the bitterness of lawsuits and fighting and tearing apart of children that no-fault was initially designed to ease.

So far limits on no-fault have been proposed in several states. Proposals in these states would let couples sign contracts making their marriages harder to dissolve and allow no-fault divorces for couples who agree to split up. Couples with children would have to go through counseling on the impact that divorce might have on a child.

A.A divorce in which both husband and wife want to call the marriage off.

B.A divorce in which the couple have got children,

C.A divorce in which the couple cannot agree on the guardianship.

D.A divorce in which only one spouse agrees to dissolve the marriage.

第9题

It being not only possible but even easy to predict which ten-year-old boys are at greates
t risk of growing up to be persistent offenders, what are we doing with the information? Just about the last thing that we should do is to wait until their troubles have escalated in adolescence and then attack them with the provisions of the new Criminal Justice Bill. If this bill becomes law, magistrates will have the power to impose residential care orders. More young people will be drawn into institutional life when all the evidence shows that this worsens rather than improves their prospects. The introduction of short sharp shocks in detention centers will simply give more young people a taste of something else they don’t need; the whole regime of detention centers is one of toughening delinquents, and if you want to train someone to be anti-establishment, “I can’t think of a better way to do it,” says the writer of this report. The Cambridge Institute of Criminology comes up with five key factors that are likely to make for delinquency: a low income family a large family, parents deemed by social workers to be bad at raising children, parents who themselves have a criminal record, and low intelligence in the child. Not surprisingly, the factors tend to overlap. Of the 63 boys in the sample who had at least three of them when they were ten, half became juvenile delinquents—compared with only a fifth of the sample as a whole. Three more factors make the prediction more accurate: being judged troublesome by teachers at the age of ten, having a father with at least two criminal convictions and having another member of the family with a criminal record. Of the 35 men who had at least two of these factors in their background 18 became persistent delinquents and 8 more were in trouble with the law. Among those key factors, far and away the most important was having a parent with a criminal record, even if that had been acquired in the distant past, even though very few parents did other than condemn delinquent behavior in their children. The role of the schools emerges as extremely important. The most reliable prediction of all on the futures of boys came from teachers’ ratings of how troublesome they were at the age of ten. If the information is there in the classroom there must be a response that brings more attention to those troublesome children: a search for things to give them credit for other than academic achievement, a refusal to allow them to go on playing truant, and a fostering of ambition and opportunity which should start early in their school careers. According to the author, delinquency should be tackled ___.

A.before adolescence

B.during institutional treatment

C.during adolescence

D.when the problem becomes acute
