W: What can I do for you?

M: Well, I'm working on a term paper about the influence of television on recent presidential elections. I found Some books I need at the main library, but I was told that the library here at the graduate school had more specialized materials.

W: Of course it depends on what you want, but We do have a large number of journals. You'll probably have to do a lot of digging. It may take some time. We also have quite a few newspapers on microfilm.

M: I think I've come to the right place. How can I find out which journals you have?

W: I can give you a list of all of them. But if you want to search by author or by subject you. can use one of the computers over there in the corner.

M: What if I run across a reference that isn't available here?

W: You can request any outside material just by typing your request into the computer.

M: You mean you can get material from other universities?

听力原文:M: The Republican Party in America is opposing stem cell research. I find it hard
to believe that in this day and age, someone would do that.

W: Stem cell research sounds pretty impressive,I'll admit. But just what is it?

M: Well,a stem cell is a special type of cell.It is a general cell that.when it divides.Call become any specific type of cell.

W: You mean,a stem cell can become a heart cell?Or a brain cell or a kidney cell?

M: That's about it.Stem cells are a part of the body's maintenance and repair system. When they divide, they can become any cell type.

W: I guess there would be some tremendous medical advantages in that sort of research.

M: You've said a mouthful.Recently, scientists were able to help a man who lost a jawbone from cancer. They recreated bone material for his jaw from stem cells. What it means is that since the new bone was created out of the person's own cells, there was no problem with rejection because the DNA was the same.

W: I bet the person was delighted. Why would anyone oppose that sort of research? It would seem to have endless potential to benefit the human race.

M: I agree, but there are people who think we should not interfere with nature and mainipulate"what is not natural".

W: It is easier to hold such a narrow view if you're not in a position to need the benefits of the research. If you're missing a jawbone because of cancer, you probably support the research.

What is the man's attitude toward the stem cell research?

A.Supportive.

B.Opposed.

听力原文:W: Hello, Ultimate Computers. May I help you?

M: Yes, this is Jack Kordell from Hunter's Office Supplies. May I speak to Elaine Strong, please?

W: I'm sorry, but she is not in right now.

M: Well, do you know when she will be back?

W: Uh, yes, she should be here later on this afternoon maybe about 4: 30. May I take a message?

M: Yes. Ms. Strong sent me a brochure detailing your newest line of laptop computers with a description of other software products, but there wasn't any information about after-sales service.

W: Oh, I'm sorry. Would you like me to fax that to you?

M: Yes, but our fax is being repaired at the moment, and it won't be working until around 2: 30. Could you try sending that information around 3: 30? That should give me time to look over the material before I call Ms. Strong, say, around 5:00.

W: Sure. Could I have your name, telephone number, and fax number, please?

M: Yes. Jack Kordell and the phone number is 560-1287. The fax number is 560-1288.

W: Ok, Jack Kordell. Is your name spelled C-o-r-d-e-l-l?

M: No. It's Kordell with a"k"and two"l". K-o-r-d-e-l-l.

W: All right, Mr. Kordell. Your phone number is 560-1287, and your fax number is 560-1288. Is that correct?

听力原文:W: Hi, Mike.

M: Hi. I'm surprised to see you on the city bus. Why not drive your car?

W: (23) I've been thinking about the environment lately. If we all use public transportation when we could, the air will be much cleaner.

M: Right. But the bus isn't exactly pollution free.

W: True. But they'll be running a lot cleaner soon. We were just talking about that in my environmental engineering class.

M: What's the city going to do? Install pollution filters of some sort on their buses?

W: They could, but those filters make the engines work harder and really cut down on fuel efficiency. Instead they found a way to make their engines more efficient.

M: How?

W: (24) Well, there is a material called the confine oxide. It's a really good insulator. And a thick coat of it gets sprayed on the certain part of the engine.

M: An insulator?

W: (25) Yes. It reflects back the heat of burning fuel. So the fuel will burn much more hotly and burn up more completely.

M: So a lot less unburned fuel comes out to pollute the air, right?

W: (25) Yeah, and the bus will need less fuel. So with the savings on fuel cost, they say this will all pay for itself in just six months.

M: Sounds like people should all go out and get this stuff to spray their car engines.

W: Well, not really that easy. To melt the materials before you can spray a coat of it on the engine parts, you first have to heat it over 10,000 degrees. It's not something we are able to do ourselves.

23. Why doesn't the woman drive her car?

24.What are the two speakers talking about?

25.What can we learn from the conversation about the material mentioned?

(20)

A.Something is wrong with her car.

B.The cost of the fuel is high.

C.It's cheap to take bus.

D.She thinks public transportation is environmental friendly.

听力原文:M: Good evening and welcome to our program. Our guest is Mrs. Green, who is an ex
pert in the field of environ mental protection. Welcome to our program, Mrs. Green.

W: Thank you.

M: Well, we hear it a lot in the news these days: "Recycle newspapers and save a tree. Collect bottles and cans so they can be reused in the manufacturing of new products." But how to promote the recycling movement? Can you give us some suggestions?

W: I think there are three essential keys.

M: What is the first one?

W: The first key is to have a more informed public, that is, to raise public awareness about the recycling process, to explain the kinds of materials that can be recycled, and provide ways on how to properly dispose of them. Local governments should educate the public on how to properly sort reusable materials from those, like waxed paper, carbon paper, plastic material such as fast food wrappers, that can't be recycled very easily.

M: Then what is the second key?

W: The second is the development of improved technology. Technological progress has been made on many fronts, but governmental agencies need to step up their support for companies involved in recycling by providing tax incentives, low-cost loans, or even grants to upgrade equipment and to encourage further research.

M: So what about the third essential key?

W: The final key is to develop a greater demand for recycled materials. This means increasing demand for the growing surplus of resources waiting to be recycled.

M: Recycling is a crucial link protecting our planet. The three keys Mrs. Green mentioned are important ways to achieve this end. Thanks for joining us, Mrs. Green.

W: You're welcome.

(23)

A.Keys to paper recycling.

B.Importance of recycling.

C.Keys to recycling improvement.

D.Technological progress in recycling.

听力原文:M: I'm doing some research into the French revolution.

W: Oh, I did some on that last year.

M: Why do you think I'm here! Could you suggest some interesting and useful sources?

W: Sure. I found "Voices from the French Revolution" by Henri Le Brun to be very useful, as well as extremely interesting and well written.

M: What makes it so good?

W: Well, he took extracts from diaries kept by people involved in the revolution. They re ally give you an idea of how it felt to live in France during that time.

M: It sounds great. Why haven't I heard of it before?

W: Well, it's only just been translated from the French original and none of the professors have added it to their booklists yet. I used the French version and translated passages myself.

M: I see. I have been told that "The French Revolution" by Victoria Jones is useful.

W: I didn't find it very useful. I mean, there was nothing in it that you can't find else where. On the other hand, it's cheap, because it's available in paperback, and you can buy it at many bookshops.

M: What about using resources available on the Internet?

W: I used the Internet for my research, but I didn't find it very helpful. Many of the web sites were too small to contain much detailed information. Others provided links to other websites, but I found myself spending a lot of time following links and not finding much information.

M: Yes, I've run across that problem myself.

W: You could try the new edition of William Wright's book. It has the same title as Victoria Jones' book. It only came out a couple of months ago and I haven't seen a copy yet. A lot of it has been rewritten or consists of additional material recently found in French archives.

M: Thanks for your help. I'll go to the bookshop and see if I can find the books you've recommended.

W: when does your research have to be completed by?

M: Well, the essay is due in six weeks, so I'll try to finish the research in four, giving me two to write the essay.

W: Good luck!

(23)

A.It's interesting.

B.It's French.

C.It's well Written.

D.It's a useful source.

听力原文:W: Wow, what a beautiful sunset.

M: Enjoy it while it lasts. The sun won't be around forever, you know.

W: You mean one day the sun will disappear?

M: Not exactly disappear, but the sun will eventually burn out and die.

W: Won't that make things really cold down here?

M: Actually, there won't be any here. When the sun dies, the earth will be destroyed too.

W: Whoa, hold on. Start from the beginning.

M: Ok. Like all stars the sun is basically a giant nuclear reactor that burns hydrogen to create energy. But like any reactor, the sun needs fuel to keep going. It's been going strong for around 4. 5 billion years, and will probably keep burning for about five billion more.

W: But then the fuel will run out.

M: Exactly. And when it does, gravity will cause the sun's core to contract. When it contracts, the core will get hotter, which will heat up the sun's upper layers and make them expand. The sun will then become what's called a red giant, and its radius will reach just past the orbit of Venus.

W: Which is bad for us.

M: We'll be burned to a crisp.

W: Sounds painful.

M: After a few billion years, the core will begin to cool and expand. The sun's upper layers will expand and lose material, and eventually the core will cool enough to become a white dwarf star, and finally a black dwarf.

W: So we're pretty much doomed.

M: Yes, but not for billions of years. Who knows? By then humans might be living on another planet. Or we'll have been enslaved by a bunch of dirty apes!

W: I think someone's been watching too much cable TV.
