Jimmy Gates was a circus owner. Last Christmas, he decided to take some gifts. He went to a children’s hospital. He was dressed up as Father Christmas. Six pretty girls accompanied him. Then, he set off. He rode a baby elephant. He went down the main street of the city. The elephant was called Jumbo. The police would not allow him to do this. He should know that. A policeman came over. He told Jimmy. He should go along a side street. Jumbo was holding up the traffic. Jimmy agreed to go at once. Jumbo would not like to go. Fifteen policemen pushed hard. They wanted to move him away from the main street. The police had a difficult time. They felt interesting. A policeman afterwards said, “Jumbo must be a few tons. It was lucky that we needn’t carry him. Certainly, we should arrest him. He has a good record. We shall forgive him this time.”

听力原文: My friend Leo makes up weak and poor excuses whenever there's something he doesn't want to do. Just two weeks ago, he was at my house when he decided he didn't want to go into work. He called his boss and said he had to get a new set of tires put on his truck. Then he sat down and watched TV with me. Not only had he lied, but his excuse wasn't a very convincing one. Another time he canceled a date with his girlfriend at the last minute, telling her he had to get a new battery for his truck.

She was angry and refused to go out with him again until he apologized. Last weekend, Leo offered the poorest excuse yet. He'd promised he'd help me move some furniture from my parents' house to my new apartment. He was supposed to bring his truck over about 8 o'clock Saturday morning. I waited and then called and left a message on his machine. About 11:30, he called and said he was sorry but he'd been getting a new set of tires put on his truck. I guess he'd forgotten he used the same excuse when he called his boss from my house. I think I need a new set of friends. I'm beginning to get tired of Leo's excuses.

Questions:

What does the speaker tell us about her friend Leo?

What did his girlfriend do when Leo canceled the date with her at the last minute?

What favor did the speaker ask Leo to do last weekend?

(30)

A.He will betray even his best friends.

B.He is able to make up good excuses.

C.He will lie whenever he wants.

D.He tries to achieve his goal at any cost.

听力原文: At sixteen, Henry Vincent was separated from his family as a result of the war. He wandered aimlessly from one country to another before finally settling down in Australia, where he trained as an electronics engineer. He established his own business but it called for so much work that marriage was out of the question.

His retirement suddenly made him realize how lonely he was and he decided to take up a hobby. With his interest in electronics, being an amateur radio operator seemed a natural choice. He installed his own equipment and obtained a license and his call sign, which is the set of letters and numbers used to identify oneself when making radio contact with other amateur operators all over the world.

Soon Henry had a great many contacts in far off places. One in particular was a man in California with whom he had much in common. One night the man in California happened to mention the village in Europe he had come from. Suddenly, Henry realized that this man was in fact his younger brother, Peter. At first, the two brothers were at a loss for words but then little by little they filled in the details of their past lives and not long afterwards Henry Vincent flew to California to be reunited with his brother.

(23)

A.He was trained as an electronics engineer.

B.He was trained as a mechanical engineer.

D.He was trained as a nuclear engineer.

听力原文: Joe Smith had been brought up in an orphanage. He envied people who were rich and decided that when he grew up he could make a lot of money.

Unfortunately, Joe was not clever and he failed all his school exams. "I will either have to find a good job or I will have to become a thief." Joe said to himself. He knew he would never find a well-paid job.

For several months Joe watched a bank out of town. He noticed when it had the fewest customers. He watched, waited and planned.

One afternoon he found that only two tellers were on duty there. "I will either succeed and be very rich or fail and go to prison." said Joe. He was willing to take the risk.

Then he watched in and pushed a demand note over the counter. The teller read it, turned pale and quietly opened a small safe behind him. He took out $ 50,000 and placed the bank notes in Joe's open bag. Then Joe ran as fast as he could.

That night Joe had to bury money in case the police caught him. He chose a deserted piece of land near the house, he was glad when the money was safely hidden in the round.

The next day he was woken by bangs on his door. He answered and there came two policemen. "Joseph Smith, you are under arrest for robbing a bank!"

Joe protested in vain. The bank had hidden cameras and the whole raid had been photographed. Joe was caught and into prison.

Ten years later Joe was set free. He made sure no one was following him and quickly made his way to the spot where he had buried the money.

Neither happiness nor money waited for him, however. A big building had been built on the site.

B.He said that he would become rich by way of robbing the bank.

C.He said that he could rob the rich of their money.
