Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:

There are two methods of fighting, the one by law, the other by force; the first method is that of men, the second of beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to the second. It is, therefore, necessary for a prince to know well how to use both the beast and the man. This was covertly taught to rulers by ancient writers, who related how Achilles and many others of those ancient princes were given to Chiron the centaur to be brought up and educated under his discipline. The parable of this semi animal, semi human teacher is meant to indicate that a prince must know how to use both natures, and that the one without the other is not durable. A prince, being thus obliged to know well how to act as a beast, must imitate the fox, and the lion, for the lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox annot defend himself from wolves. Those that wish to be only lions do not understand this. Therefore, a prudent ruler ought not to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interest, and when the reasons which made him bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this precept would not be good ; but as they are bad, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith with them. Nor have legitimate grounds ever failed a prince who wished to show colorable excuse for the nonfulfilment of his promise. Of this one could furnish an infinite number of examples, and show how many times peace has been broken, and how many promises rendered worthless, by the faithlessness of princes, and those that have best been able to imitate the fox have succeeded best. But it is necessary to be able to disguise this character well, and to be a great feigner and dissembler, and men are so simple and so ready to obey present necessities, that the one who deceives will always find those who allow themselves to be deceived. The author of the passage does not believe that ____

A.A.people can protect themselves

B.B.the truth makes men free

C.C.leaders have to be consistent

D.D.princes are human

Questions (1)to(5) are based on the following passage:What makes a person a scientist?

Questions (1)to(5) are based on the following passage:

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways ---or tools ---of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is no. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power saw is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further: he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works

The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the condition permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time mustwork under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was latter tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurement. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

(1)A sound scientific theory should be one that .

A) works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other times

B) leaves no room for improvement

C) does not allow any change even under different conditions

D) can be used for many purposes

(2)What, according to the passage, makes a scientist?

A) The tools he uses.

B) His ways of learning.

C) The way he uses his tools.

D) The various tools he uses.

(3) Albert Einstein built up his theory of relativity through .

A) investigation

B) experiments

C) tests

D) mathematics

(4)“…Knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone.” The author says this to show .

A) the importance of information

B) the importance of thinking

C) the difference between scientists and ordinary people

D) the difference between carpenters and ordinary people

(5) What is the main idea of the passage?

A) Scientists are different from ordinary people.

B) The theory of relativity.

C) Exactness is the core of science.

D) Exactness and way of using tools are the key to the making of a scientist.

And exercise releases hormones that can improve (10) and relieve stress, which can also help learning. So while it may seem as if kids are just exercising their bodies when they’re running around, they may actually be exercising their brains as well.

Most insurance companies in the world are stock insurance companies or mutual insurance companies. A stock insurance company is owned by stockholders, who share in profits earned by the company. A mutual insurance company is owned by the policyholders(投保人). Profits earned by a mutual insurance company are returned to the policyholders as dividends(股息) or used to cut future insurance cost.

In addition to the private insurance organizations, certain types of insurance are provided in the U.S. by governmental organizations. A notable instance is the system of social security operated by the federal government through the Social Security Administration.

An insurance company may require a policyholder to provide proof of the ownership and the value of lost or damaged property before it pays compensation. For this reason, policyholders should have such evidence of their possessions as lists, sales receipts, appraisals(估价单), or photographs. The evidence should be kept in a safe-deposit box or other secure place outside the home.

Many companies that sell health insurance policies(保险) provide cash benefits to the insured person. A cash benefit is a fixed dollar amount for each medical expense or day of hospitalization. If the cash benefits do not cover the entire cost of medical care, the policyholder must pay the rest.

The profits earned by a mutual insurance company______.

A.are shared by the stockholders

B.are all given to the policyholders as stocks

C.are used to reduce future insurance cost

D.are used in some investment
