听力原文: Nothing can stop you from achieving your goals if you have the right attitude. B

y believing that you will fulfill your ambitions, then your chances of actually fulfilling them are already increased.

My son Joey was born with club feet, (29) The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally, but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the age of six, Joey could go to school with other neighbor children. (30) By the time he was eight, you wouldn't know he had a problem when you saw him walk.

One year later, Joey would jump right in and nun as most children do during play. We never told him that he probably wouldn't be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn't know.

In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn't tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn't know.

He continued to run four to five miles a day. Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. (31)He was in seventh grade, while the other six team members were all eighth-graders. We never told him he shouldn't expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn't do it... so he didn't know. He just did it.

听力原文: Valentine's Day is the time of the year when couples show their love for each other by sending cards, flowers and chocolates. But it is not only about public displays of affection: in recent years it has also become big business. In the UK alone, more than ~ 20 million is spent on flowers, while in the United States over $ I billion is spent on chocolates.

(32)Although Valentine's Day has become a global industry with more than 80 million roses sold worldwide, the origins of the day are unclear and hidden in the mists of time. Nobody knows exactly who St Valentine was, although some historians suggest he was a Roman killed by a Roman Emperor in the third century AD. It is said that the first recorded Valentine's card was sent by the imprisoned Duke of Orleans in 1415. It is believed that he sought solace by writing love poems to his wife.

Valentine's Day, or its equivalent, is now celebrated in many countries around the world. However, the traditions often differ from place to place. (33)In Japan, for example, it is customary for the woman to send chocolates to the man, while (34)in Korea April 14th is known as "Black Day" and is when the unfortunate men who receive nothing on Valentine's Day gather to eat noodles and commiserate with each other.

Valentine's cards can also be used for less than romantic purposes. (35)Police in the UK city of Liverpool sent Valentine's cards to criminals who failed to appear in court or have not paid fines. The cards contained the verse, "Roses are red, violets are blue, you've got a warrant, and (35)we'd love to see you." Who says romance is dead?

(33)

A.More than 20 million.

B.More than 1 billion.

C.More than 80 million.

D.More than 3 billion.

听力原文: Between ten and midnight the United States is politically leaderless -- there is no center of information anywhere in the nation except in the New York headquarters of the great broadcasting companies and the two great wire services. No candidate and no party can afford the investment on election night to match the news-gathering resources of the mass media; and so, as every citizen sits in his home watching his TV set or listening to his radio, he is the equal of any other in knowledge. There is nothing that can be done in these hours, for no one can any longer direct the great strike for American power; the polls have closed. Good or bad, whatever the decision, America will accept the decision -- and cut down any man who goes against it, even though for millions the decision runs contrary to their own votes. The general vote is an expression of national will, the only substitute for violence and blood. Its decision is to be defended as one defends civilization itself.

There is nothing like this American expression of will in England or France, India or Russia. Only one other major nation in modern history has ever tried to elect its leader directly by mass, free, popular vote. This was the Weimar Republic of Germany, which modeled its unitary vote for a national leader on the American practice. Out of its experiment with the system it got Hitler. Americans have had Lincoln, Wilson, two Roosevelt's. Nothing can be done when the voting returns are flooding in: the White House and its power will move to one or another of the two candidates, and all will know about it in the morning.

(33)

A.Watching sports on TV.

B.Watching election returns.

C.Late snacks.

D.Sleeping.
