A nine year old schoolgirl single handedly cooks up a science fair experiment that ends up

debunking (揭穿真相) a wildly practiced medical treatment. Emily Rosa's target was a practice known as therapeutic (治疗的) touch (TT for short ), whose advocates manipulate patients' "energy field" to make them feel better and even, say some, to cure them of various ills. Yet Emily's test shows that these energy fields can't be detected, even by trained TT practitioners (行医者). Obviously mindful of the publicity value of the situation, Journal editor Georgy Lundberg appeared on TV to declare, "Age doesn't matter. It's good science that matters, and this is good science."

Emily's mother Linda Rosa, a registered nurse, has been campaigning against TT for nearly decade. Linda first thought about TT in the late 1980s, when she learned it was on the approved list for continuing nursing education in Colorado. Its 100,000 trained practitioners (48,000 in the U. S. ) don't touch their patients. Instead, they waved their hands a few inches from the patient's body, pushing energy fields around until they are in "balance". TT advocates say these manipulations can help heal wounds, relieve pain and reduce fever. The claims are taken seriously enough that TT therapists are frequently hired by leading hospitals, at up to $ 70 an hour, to smooth patients' energy, sometimes during surgery.

Yet Rosa could not find any evidence that it works. To provide such proof, TT therapists would have to sit down for independent testing — something they haven't been eager to do, even though James Randi has offered more than $1 million to anyone who can demonstrate the existence of a human energy field. (He's had one taker so far. She failed.) A skeptic might conclude that TT practitioners are afraid to lay their beliefs on the line. But who could turn down an innocent four grader? Says Emily: "I think they didn't take me very seriously because I'm a kid."

The experiment was straightforward: 21 TT therapists stuck their hands, palms up, through a screen. Emily held her own hand over one of theirs — left or right — and the practitioners had to say which hand it was. When the results were recorded, they'd done no better than they would have by simply guessing. If there was an energy field, they couldn't feel it.

Which of the following is evidence that TT is wildly practiced?

A.TT has been in existence for decades.

B.Many patients were cured by therapeutic touch.

C.TT therapists are often employed by leading hospitals.

D.More than 100,000 people are undergoing TT treatment.

短文翻译(英译汉)

As a child—and as an adult as well—Bill was untidy. It has been said that in order to counteract this, Mary drew up weekly clothing plans for him. On Mondays he might go to school in blue, on Tuesdays in green, on Wednesdays in brown, on Thursdays in black, and so on Weekend meal schedules might also be planned in detail.

Bill’s contemporaries, even at the age, recognized that he was exceptional. Every year, he and his friends would go to summer camp. Bill especially liked swimming and other sports. One of his summer camp friends recalled, “He was never a nerd or a goof or the kind of kid you didn’t want your team. We all knew Bill was smarter than us. Even back then, when he was nine or ten years old, he talked like an adult and could express himself in ways that none of us understood.” Bill was also well ahead of his classmates in mathematics and science. He needed to go to a school that challenged him to Lakeside—an all-boys’ school for exceptional students. It was Seattle’s most exclusive school and was noted for its rigorous academic demands.” Lakeside allowed students to pursue their own interests, to whatever extent they wished. The school prided itself on making conditions and facilities available that would enable all its students to reach their full potential. It was the ideal environment for someone like Bill Gates.

听力原文: Robert Edwards was blinded in an automobile accident nine years ago. He was also partially deaf because of old age. Last week, he was strolling near his home when a thunderstorm approached. He took refuge under a tree and was struck by lightning. He was knocked to the ground and woke up some 20 minutes later, lying face down in water below a tree. He went into the house and lay down is bed. A short time later, he woke, his legs were numb mid he was trembling, but, when he opened his eyes, he could see the clock across the room fading in and out in front of him. When his wife entered, he met her for the first time in nine years. Doctors confirm that he has regained his sight and hearing apparently from the flash of lightning, but they are unable to explain the occurrence. The only possible explanation offered by one doctor was that, since Edwards lost his sight as a result of emotional shock in a terrible accident, perhaps the only way it could be restored by another emotional shock.

听力原文: The Chinese New Year is now popularly known as the Spring Festival because it starts from the Beginning of Spring. Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations are hanging around. All agree, however, that the word Nian, which in modem Chinese solely means "year", was originally the name of a monster beast that started to prey on people the night before the beginning of a new year

One legend goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would swallow a great many people with one bite. People were very seared. One day, an old man came to their rescue, offering to subdue Nian. To Nian he said, "I hear that you are very capable, but can you swallow the other beasts of prey on earth instead of people who are by no means of your worthy opponents?" So, it swallowed many of the beasts of prey on earth that also harassed people and their domestic animals from time to time.

After that, the old man disappeared riding the beast Nian. He turned out to be an immortal god. Now that Nian is gone and other beasts of prey are 'also scared into forests, people begin to enjoy their peaceful life. Before the old man left, he had told people to put up red paper decorations on their windows and doors at each year's end to scare a way Nian in case it sneaked back again, because red is the color the beast feared the most.

From then on, the tradition of observing the conquest of Nian is carried on from generation to generation.

(33)

A.The beginning of Spring.

B.The day before the New Year day.

C.The New Year day.

D.The day after the New Year day.

听力原文: The majority of people, about nine out of ten, are fight-handed. Up until recently, people who were left-handed were considered old, and once children showed this tendency they were forced to use their right hands. Today, left-hand- edness is generally accepted but it is still a disadvantage in a world where most people are fight-handed. For example, most tools are still designed for right-handed people.

In sports, by contrast, doing things with the left hand or foot is often an advantage. Throwing, kicking or hitting from the "wrong" side may confuse opponents, who are accustomed to dealing with the majority of players who are right-handed.

In the past, in most Western societies, children were often forced to use their right hands, especially to write. In some cases, the left hand was tied behind the child's back so that it could not be used. If, in the future, they are allowed to choose, there will certainly be more left handed people, and probably fewer depressed people as a result of being forced to use their right hands.

(30)

A.They thought them strange.

B.They considered they were funny.

C.They thought them clever.

D.They considered they were creative.
