听力原文: Architecture is to building as literature is to the printed word. The best buildings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They then survive not only as beautiful objects, but as documents of the history of cultures. These achievements are never wholly the work of individuals. Architecture is a social art.

The revival of classical culture brought about an entirely new age, not only in philosophy and literature but in the visual arts as well. In architecture, the principles and styles of ancient Greece and Rome were brought back to life and reinterpreted. They remained dominant until the 20th century.

Many kinds of stone are used as building materials. Stone and marble were chosen for important monuments because they are not burnable and can be expected to endure. Stone architecture was often blended with stone sculpture. The use of stone has declined, however, because a number of other materials are more adaptable to industrial use.

The complexity of modern life calls for a variety of buildings. More people live in mass housing and go to work in large office buildings; they spend their income in large shopping centres, send their children to many different kinds of schools, and when they are sick they go to specialized hospitals and clinics. All these different types of buildings accumulated experiences needed by their designers.

By the middle of the 20th century, modern architecture, which was influenced by new technology and mass production, was dealing with increasingly complex social needs. Important characteristics of modern architectural works are expanses of glass and the use of reinforced concrete.

听力原文:One of ray main goals in this survey course of American painting and architecture

听力原文: One of ray main goals in this survey course of American painting and architecture is to train you to see. I want you to increase your stock of visual experiences by using the slide library at least five hours a week. The library, which is maintained by the Art History Department, is located in the basement of the Art Center, and is open seven days a week.

By the end of this course, I expect you to be able to identify two thousand slides of various American works of art. Slide identification questions will appear on the weekly exam and the final. During each of the ten weeks of this course, I will show a set of two hundred slides during my lectures. You should plan on looking at each set twice in the slide library, once before the week's lectures end one after. This pattern of three exposures will improve your visual memory. Please do not remove the slides from the slide library. Doing so is a cause for dismissal from the course.

Although becoming familiar with two thousand slides may sound difficult, experience has shown me that this is the beast way to increase the visual abilities of students such as yourselves, who have never taken an art history course before.

(33)

A.The material to be tested that day.

B.The history of the slide library.

C.The use of slides in the course.

D.The outline of the course.

听力原文: Yale University is a private university. It was founded in 1701 and is the third oldest university in the United States. Yale University was named in honor of a wealthy British, Elihu Yale, who had made a series of donations to the school. Yale's initial lessons emphasized classical studies.

Yale is highly selective in its admissions and is among the nation's most highly rated schools in terms of academic and social prestige. It includes Yale College for undergraduate, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and 10 professional schools.

Yale's Sheffield Scientific School, began in the 1850s, was one of the leading scientific and engineering centers in the nation until the 20th century. A graduate school of arts and sciences was organized in 1847. Schools of music, forestry, nursing, drama, management, and architecture were subsequently established. Women were first admitted to the graduate school in 1892, but the university did not become fully coeducational until 1969.

The Yale University Library, with more than 10.5 million volumes, is one of the largest in the United States. Yale's extensive art gallery, the first in an American college, was established in 1832 when John Trumbull donated a gallery to house his paintings of the American Revolution.

Yale's graduates have included U.S. Presidents William Howard Taft, Gerald R. Ford, George Bush, and William J. (Bill) Clinton; political leader John C. Calhoun; and inventor Eli Whitney.

(31)

A.It is a private university.

B.It was founded in 1710.

C.It is the third oldest university in the United States.

D.It was named after a person.

听力原文: Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really like modern music; they find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world. Such people look for perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient with anyone who is brave enough to experiment with new materials or to express himself or the age in original ideas. It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a painting, the artist's failure concerns himself alone, but if it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people do, that modern architecture is nothing.

We can't judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient buildings. Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The modern architect knows he should learn from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to imitate the past. He is too proud to do that.

(30)

A.Because they are aged.

B.Because they find it hard to accept modern things.

C.Because they take their standards of perfection from the Greek.

D.Because they look at things by the standards of the past.
