Newspapers, along with reporting the news, instruct, entertain, and give opinions. An impo
rtant way for reading a large, big-city newspaper is knowing how to take it apart. Can you find these separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, classified ads? Does your paper have other sections?

News stories give facts, not the author's opinions. Editorials do the opposite; you can expect an editorial to take sides. Some newspaper editorials have a by-line with the author's name, but many newspapers have unsigned editorials. These reflect the opinions of the publisher or editor.

You can be a better reader if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, you can expect headlines to omit unnecessary words. You can expect to find the most important facts in the lead paragraph (the first paragraph) of a news story. You can expect important news items to be on the front page. You can expect less important items to be on the inside pages.

Most of all, the more you know about current news, the more you will understand what is in the newspaper; important stories are generally presented one day and followed up on following days. So, an important way for reading newspapers is reading one frequently.

To read a large newspaper, a good way is ______.

A.to read it section be section

B.to do some paper-cutting

C.to find separate sections and read accordingly

D.to predict what is inside the newspaper

听力原文:W: Oh, Ken, I have been meaning to talk to you.

M: Hi, Denise! What's up?

W: I have this great job lined up to manage a clothing store at the mall.

M: Oh, say in detail, please.

W: Well, one of the professors in my department just told me about a summer practice program that is available. She thinks I might be able to practice in the office at the Wayfarer Hotel here in town.

M: That sounds like a great opportunity, too. Why not take advantage of it?

W: I'd love to, especially since I'm studying hotel management. It would be a great way to get some practical experience in my field.

M: And you never know, it might lead to something with them after graduation. They're one of the biggest hotel chains in the area.

W: You're right. But the problem is that I wouldn't be making nearly as much money as I would be working in the clothing store. Not to mention the discount I'd get on clothes there.

M: How much money can you get from your practice work?

W: Very little money. But I can get a free room and board for the summer.

M: Well, if I were you, I'd take it anyway. You can always get a job during the school year next year to make a few extra bucks.

(23)

A.To ask for help finding a job.

B.To ask him to give her some advice.

C.To invite him to go shopping with her later.

D.To find out what he's doing during the summer.

The pollution of Hong Kong's beaches by oil from a damaged tanker last year recalls a simi
lar incident which took place in Britain in 1967 when the Torrey Canyon, a huge oil tanker, split in two and caused disaster in coastal areas. Shoals of fishes were killed, sea birds hopelessly fouled with oil and coastal holiday resorts put out of business for several weeks. As a result of this particular incident scientists are becoming restless at the thought of Britain’s inability to cope with national disasters on a large scale. The reason for their concern is that technology is rapidly outstripping (超越) man's ability to control it.

Oil tankers, for instance, have been allowed to get bigger and bigger without sufficient thought being given to emergency braking and maneuvering arrangement. Collisions at Sea continue, but little effect has been made to develop safety devices as effective as those used for aircraft.

Scientists were outspoken in expressing their concern during a recent meeting of the British Association. Unanimous approval was voiced when the leading speaker urged that a permanent national rescue services should be established, equipped for any emergency and ready to move off immediately.

of all the possible disasters mentioned, the one promoting most discussion was a major release of radioactivity from a nuclear power station. one does not need a particularly vivid imagination to visualize the other possibilities discussed. What would be the effect of a jumbo-jet crashing on a large chemical plant handling destroying liquids? Could the tapping of natural gas lead to any form. to collapse? Suppose a lorry full of a highly poisonous chemical crashed unseen into a large reservoir? Dams can burst, abnormal conditions can lead to massive electrical blackouts.

An intensive study of such possibilities could at least reduce the effects of future disasters. For example, it would mean that a number of technical alternatives (such as the choice between detergent or chalk for dispersing oil) could be examined and tested in advance so that specially trained expert would know exactly what action was needed in a given emergency.

The main idea of the second paragraph is that ______

A.safety precautions in aircraft are not as effective as those used on ships

B.modern oil tankers can stop or turn easily in spite of their size

C.there are now fewer collisions at sea because of modem safety devices

D.oil tankers are so big that special devices are needed

Researchers in the field of psychology have found that one of the best ways to make an imp
ortant decision, such as choosing a university to attend or a business to invest in, involves the utilization of a decision worksheet. Psychologists who study optimization compare the actual decisions made by people to theoretical ideal decisions to see how similar they are. Proponents of the worksheet procedure believe that it will yield optimal, that is, the best decisions. Although there are several variations on the exact format that worksheets can take, they are all similar in their essential aspects. Worksheets require defining the problem in a clear and concise way and then listing all possible solutions to the problem. Next, the pertinent considerations that will be affected by each decision are listed, and the relative importance of each consideration or consequence is determined. Each consideration is assigned a numerical value to reflect its relative importance. A decision is mathematically calculated by adding these values together. The alternative with the highest number of points emerges as the best decision.

Since most important problems are multifaceted, there are several alternatives to choose from, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. One of the benefits of a pencil and paper decision-making procedure is that it permits people to deal with more variables than their minds can generally comprehend and remember. On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their minds at once. A worksheet can be especially useful when the decision involves a large number of variables with complex relationships. A realistic example for many college students is the question "What sill I do after graduation?" A graduate might seek a position that offers specialized training, pursue an advanced degree, or travel abroad for a year.

A decision-making worksheet begins with a succinct statement of the problem that will also help to narrow it. It is important to be clear about the distinction between long range and immediate goals because long-range goals often involve a different decision than short range ones. Focusing on long-range goals, a graduating student might revise the question above to "What will I do after graduation that will lead to successful career?"

What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.A method to assist in making complex decisions.

B.A comparison of actual decisions and ideal decisions.

C.Research on how people make decisions.

D.Differences between long-range and short-range decision making.

听力原文: (29) It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, (31)the distinction between schooling and education implied a lot.

(30) Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral part of one's entire life.

Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take as- signed seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they're not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.

(30)

A.At school.

B.At home.

C.In a community.

D.In a library.
