听力原文: Americans love pets. Many pet owners treat their furry friends as part of the family. If they have an eye for fashion, pet owners can dress their pets in stylish clothes. For special occasions, they can use perfume to make their dogs smell well. You might say Americans treat their pets like they treat their children—sometimes even better. In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At least 43 percent of U. S. homes have pets of some sort. Exotic creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and even wolves, find a home with some Americans. More common pets include tropical fish, mice and birds. But the all time favorites are cats and dogs, even at the White House. The Bushes’ dog, Spot, has replaced the Clintons’ cat, Socks. Leading a dog’s life in America isn’t such a bad thing. Many grocery stores sell delicious pet foods to owners eager to please their pets. In Houston, Texas, dogs can have their dinner delivered to their homes, just like pizza. Pets can even accompany their owners on vacation. Fancy hotels are beginning to accommodate both man and pets. Furry guests in hotels can enjoy delicious meals served on fine china and sleep in soft beds. The average American enjoys having pets around, and for good reasons. Researchers have discovered that interacting with animals lowers a person’s blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from burglars and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help the home get rid of pests. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide companionship and love. In many cases, having a pet prepares 32 a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets even encourage social relationships: They give their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they provide a good topic of conversation.
(33)
A.Presidents like to keep pets.
B.Pets can offer protection for owners.
C.Pets can encourage social relationships.
D.Pets are good companies to many old people.

Three things seem to be very important: [29] fresh air, fresh food and a simple way of life. People work near their homes in the clean, mountain air instead of traveling long distances to work by car, bus or train. They do not sit all day in busy offices or factories, but work hard outdoors in the fields. They take more exercise and eat less food than people in the cities of the West. For years the Hunzas of the Himalayas did not need policemen, lawyers or doctors. There was no crime, no divorce and not much illness in their society. 听力原文: London in the 17th century was very attractive, like many European cities of the time. There was a beautiful cathedral, St. Paul's, and a magnificent Town Hall, the Guildhall. Also, there were many attractive churches and important buildings. There was one large bridge across the River Thames, and on the south side of the river there were one or two theatres, including Shakespeare's theatre, the Globe.
However, the majority of the half a million inhabitants of the city lived in small houses in narrow, dirty streets. There were no drains, so people threw their dirty water and rubbish onto the street. Because of this, there was a strong smell and there were many rats and flies. In 1665, there was a great plague in the city of London. At least 70,000 people died and many others left London and went into the country for several months. Then slowly the plague died away and people started to return from the country.
On September 2, 1666 at about three o'clock in the morning, a fire suddenly started in a baker's shop in Pudding Lane. There was a strong wind and the fire spread quickly from one street to the next. The fire lasted for three days and destroyed 13,200 homes and 88 churches, including St. Paul's Cathedral, the Guildhall and many other important buildings. This was the end of the old city of London.
(33)
A.Near Town Hall.
B.In a narrow, dirty street.

(28 ) Reformers early in the twentieth century suggested that education programs should suit the needs of specific populations. Immigrant women were one such population. Schools tried to educate young women so they could occupy productive places in the urban industrial economy, and one place many educators considered appropriate for women was the home. Although looking after the house and family was familiar to immigrant women. American education gave homemaking a new definition. In preindustrial economies, homemaking had meant the production as well as the consumption of goods, and it commonly included income-producing activities both inside and outside the home, (29) in the highly industrialized early-twentieth-century United States, however, overproduction rather than scarcity was becoming a problem. Thus, the ideal American homemaker was viewed as A consumer rather than a producer. Schools trained women to be consumer homemakers, cooking, shopping, decorating, and caring for children "efficiently" in their own homes, or if economic necessity demanded, as employees in the homes of others.
(33)
A.Reformers' suggestions.
B.The coming of a large population from Europe.
C.The expansion of industrial cities.

听力原文: The Europeans who left their homeland in the 18th and 19th centuries and settled their homes in North America are referred to as early settlers. Early settlers who came from the eastern parts of the present U.S.A. were used to having many trees around, so they found it rather hard to get used to living in a treeless plain like the state of Nebraska. When they first settled down in Nebraska, they needed large quantities of wood for building houses, making fires and doing many other things. Therefore they started many tree-planting plans that went on for years and years. Finally in 1872, a newspaperman named J. Sterling Morton had an idea: Why not have a special day set aside for planting trees. So Arbor Day was born on April 10th, 1872. The state government announced that it would give prizes to individuals and groups that planted the most trees. On that first day, more than 1,000,000 trees were planted in Nebraska. In this way Nebraska has been full of trees and it's green all the year around.
(33)
A.Who the early settlers were.
B.When the first Arbor Day began.
C.How the first Arbor Day came into being.
D.Who was J. Sterling Morton.

听力原文: The traditional American family used to have a working father, a housewife-mother, and two or three children. But in the last 25 years, this picture has changed. Now we have many different kinds of families and living situations besides this traditional one. For example, there are many single mothers and single fathers who are raising children by themselves. There are married couples who decide that they don't want any children. Sometimes adult children who have been living alone for a long time come back and live with their parents again. You can also find groups of older people sharing a house in order to save money. And there are many other examples of new types of families in this country.
Why has the traditional family changed so much? Well, the reasons are both social and economic. First, as you know, the divorce rate is high in our culture; as a result, we have many single-parent families. Second, there is unemployment among young adults. If they cannot find a job, many times they return home and live with their parents again. But of course the most important reason for the changes in the American family is all American women are now working or looking for work. This means that more than half of all American homes do not have a full-time homemaker any more.
(23)
A.Traditional American family.
B.Modern American family.
C.Women's role in American family.
D.Changes in the American families and reasons.
