听力原文:W: It was just five years ago that the iPod first hit the market. Now wherever yo
u go, you are sure to see those white ear buzzes. Steve, did Apple understand what it was launching five years ago?

M: Not really, it was after iPod came out that they realized everyone could enjoy this. Then they decided to extend it to the Windows platform, and millions of people took off with iPods.

W: What exactly has it brought?

M: It changed Apple from a company with a small market share with millions of computers to one with a massive market share in an incredibly important new product category.

W: Then iPod has completely changed Apple's profile.

M: Right. People are now being driven from iPods to Apple's computers as opposed to vice versa. They say, "This iPod is amazing. My whole music collections are with me. It's so easy to use. I love it. "And they look at Apple's software as well.

W: How many are being sold?

M: 67 million. It's going to be 70 million pretty soon. I think next year it will hit 100 million.

W: That's incredible. Do you think it is the peak or will it keep moving?

M: Keep moving. Take a look at the first iPods, they were sort of huge. They are getting smaller, and this year we've got even smaller.

W: I guess that's the other thing about iPods. They are amazing, good in your hands, so user-friendly. They're really imaginative.

M: Yeah, the more you use it, the more you become emotionally attached to it. You know what's really changed? I don't think Apple wants to do this. The music business world. On the iTune store, you can pick any song you like and buy it anytime you like.

(23)

A.How iPod has changed Apple computers.

B.The impact iPod has had on the world.

C.The advantages of possessing an iPod.

D.The popularity of iPod among people.

听力原文:M: Are you ready for the trip to museums in the Big Apple? I can hardly wait.

W: The Big Apple? What are you talking about?

M: The Big Apple is the nickname for New York City.

W: Oh, tell me, where does the nickname the Big Apple come from?

M: The jazz musicians of the 1920's are responsible for the name. When they played a concert in a city, they called that city an apple.

W: Oh, but I still can't understand why they called it an apple instead of calling something else like a cake?

M: I am not very sure about that. New York was the biggest city in the country, and the best place for a jazz concert. So the musicians called it the Big Apple.

W: I think it's not only a big apple for the musicians but a big apple for everyone who wants to find an opportunity in that city.

M: That's a good idea. Well, you are going to New York with us, aren't you?

W: Yes, I'm going to. I'm especially looking forward to seeing the Museum of Modern Arts.

M: And I heard that there's a special show of 20th century American Painters there.

W: Amazing! New York is such a fascinating place. And it even has an interesting nickname.

M: Want to have a bite of the Big Apple, don't you?

W: Sure.

听力原文: An old friend from abroad, whom I was expecting to stay with, telephoned from the airport to tell me that he had arrived. I was still at the office at the time, but I had made arrangements for his arrival. After explaining where my new flat was, I told him that I had left the key under a stone near the door.As I was likely to be at home rather later, I advised him to go into the kitchen and help himself to food and drink.

Two hours later, my friend telephoned me from the flat. At the moment, he said, he was listening to some of my re- cords after having just had a truly wonderful meal. He had found a pan on the gas stove and fried two eggs and had helped himself to some cold chicken from the refrigerator. Now he said, he was drinking a glass of orange juice and he hoped I would join him. I asked him if he had reached the flat without difficulty, he answered that he had not been able to find the key under the stone, but fortunately the living-room window just by the apple tree had been open and he had climbed in. I listened to all this in astonishment. There is no apple tree in front of my living room, but there is one in front of my neighbor's.

听力原文: The competition among producers of personal computers is essentially a race to get the best, most innovative products to the marketplace. Marketers in this environment frequently have to make a judgment as to their competitors' role when making marketing strategy decisions. If major competitors are changing their products, then a marketer may want to follow suit to remain competitive. Apple Computer, Inc. has introduced two new, faster personal computers, the Mackintosh II and Mackintosh SE, in anticipation of the introduction of a new PC by IBM, one of Apple's major competitors.

Apple's new computers are much faster and more powerful than its earlier models. The improved Mackintosh is able to run programs that previously were impossible to run on an Apple PC, including IBM compatible(兼容的) programs. This compatibility feature illustrates computer manufacturers' new attitude of giving customers the features they want. Making Apple computers capable of running IBM software is Apple's effort at making the Mackintosh compatible with IBM computers and thus more popular in the office, where Apple hopes to increase sales. Users of the new Apple can also add accessories(附件) to make their machines specialize in specific uses, such as engineering and writing.

The new computers represent a big improvement over past models, but they also cost much more. Company officials do not think the higher price will slow down buyers who want to step up to a more powerful computer. Apple wants to stay in the high price end of the personal computer market to finance research for even faster, more sophisticated computers.

Even though Apple and IBM are major competitors, both companies realize that their competitor's computers have certain features that their own models do not. The Apple line has always been popular for its sophisticated color graphics(图形), whereas the IBM machines have always been favored in offices. In the future, there will probably be more compatibility between the two companies' products, which no doubt will require that both Apple and IBM change marketing strategies.

(33)

A.Because IBM is changing its computer models continuously.

B.Because it wants to make its machines specialize in specific uses.

C.Because it wants to stay ahead of IBM in the competitive computer market.

D.Because it expects its major competitor IBM to follow its example.

听力原文:W: Hello, Patrick, is that you?

M: Yeah Jane, what can I do for you?

W: I was calling about the apple tree that you were trimming yesterday.

M: That was hard work!

W: I'm sure it was. It sure looked difficult.

M: Yeah, I'm glad it's finished. Hauling the branches to the front for garbage pick up was no fun either.

W: Well, I don't think you're quite finished yet. Some of the larger branches fell over into my yard, and I think you should come and get them.

M: Listen Jane, I don't see why I should do that. You eat all the apples that fall in your yard and you've never complained about that before.

W: Well, it's easier to pick up apples then to drag tree branches all the way to the curb. My kids pick up the apples, and the branches are just too big for them to drag.

M: Well, I guess you'll just have to do it yourself, Jane.

W: Patrick, I wish you would reconsider. We've always gotten along fairly well, but I think you're out of line here. The branches are your responsibility.

M: Sorry Jane, I disagree! You take the benefits of the apple tree, but refuse to deal with the bad side of it! Besides, it won't take you any time to get the branches out front!

W: Get the branches off my property or I'll have to sue you.

M: yeah? For what?! You're taking those law classes too seriously! I've got to go. I have to pick up my son.

W: You'll be heating from me.

M: Yeah, yeah. See you in court Jane.

(23)

A.He picked up some apples in his yard.

B.He cut some branches off the apple tree.

C.He quarreled with his neighbor over the fence.

D.He cleaned up all the garbage in the woman's yard.

听力原文: Almost all states in America have a state fair. They last for one, two or three weeks. The Indiana state fair is one of the largest and oldest state fairs in the United States. It is held every summer. It started in 1852. Its goals were to educate, share ideas, and present Indiana's best products. The cost of a single ticket to enter the fair was 20 cents.

During the early 1930's, officials of the fair ruled that the people could attend by paying with something other than money. For example, farmers brought a bag of grain in exchange for a ticket. With the passage of time, the fair has grown and changed a lot, but it is still one of Indiana's most celebrated events. People from all over Indiana and from many other states attend the fair. They can do many things at the fair.

They can watch the judging of the price cows, pigs, and other animals, they can see sheep getting their wool cut, and they can learn how that wool is made into clothing; they can watch cows giving birth. In fact, people can learn about the animals they would never see except at the fair. The fair provides a chance for the farming communities to show its skills and farm products. Today, children and adults at the fair can play new computer games, or attend more traditional games of skill. They can watch performances put on by famous entertainers.
