第4题

Most of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in the history books are grea
t conquerors and generals and soldiers, whereas the people who really helped civilization forward are often never mentioned at all. We do not know who first set a broken leg, or launched a seaworthy boat, or calculated the length of the year, or manured(施肥于) a field; but we know all about the killers and destroyers.

People think a great deal of them, so much that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general or a soldier. And I think most people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten in battle the greatest number of other countries and ruled over them as conquerors. It is just possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight; so do savages; hence to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized. Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling them how to do it most efficiently-this, after all, is what conquerors and generals have done—is not being civilized. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some ways of settling their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off the greater number of the other side, and then saying that that side which has killed most has won. And not only has it won, but, because it has won, it has been in the right. For that is what going to war means; it means saying that might is right.

That is what the story of mankind has on the whole been like. Even our own age has fought the two greatest wars in history, in which millions of people were killed or mutilated. And while today it is true that people do not fight and kill each other in the streets-while, that is to say, we have got to the stage of keeping the rules and behaving properly to each other in daily life—nations and countries have not learnt to do this yet, and still behave like savages.

The first sentence of the passage tells us that ______.

A.most history books were written by conquerors, generals and soldiers

B.those who really helped civilization forward is not mentioned in any history book

C.conquerors, generals and soldiers should not be mentioned in history books

D.history books tells us far more about conquerors and soldiers than about those who really helped civilization forward

第6题

The adults in the Unites states constitute a work force of about eighty-one million employ
ed people, of whom only twenty-seven million possess a marketable skill as a result of conscious career development. The remaining two-thirds of the work force not counting five million unemployed have managed to enter a livelihood, without special skills or experience. During their employed life, these individuals will hold twelve different jobs, for the most part unrelated to each other.

Currently, about two and a half million young people a year leave high school or college, with little or no idea of what to do with their lives. I estimate that upwards of 50 percent of our young people now in school or college have no real goals toward which to aim, and that they have very little information or help for establishing those goals and pursuing them systematically.

There may have been a time when we could afford twelve or sixteen or more years of formal education without work-related purpose. The swiftly moving technological and social evolution no longer has a place for the unskilled or unschooled.

There are unfilled jobs all over the country. Yet, 17 percent of our under-twenty age group are unemployed, many of them on welfare. More than 30 percent of our minority young people of this age group were unemployed. Virtually none of these young people had the benefits of career education or the traditional technical education available in many schools. Is it any wonder that student's unrest is the result of the unchanging institutional codes that have failed to make learning useful or meaningful for those who now want more realistic teaching and learning than the system offers?

Education, I repeat, is not solely a matter of equipping students for jobs. The heart of the learning process involves sciences. It is the way a man's mind works, and not just what he can do with his hands, that gives quality and purpose to life. But I see no conflict between the virtues of liberal education and career development. In fact, our neglect of career development in recent years has done damage to the total educational needs of both the individual and the nation.

From the passage we can infer that ______.

A.most adults in work force of the United States are skillful workers

B.American society is short of skillful workers

C.most schools provide technical education

D.the purpose of education is to learn sciences

Are You a Successful Leader?

(1) Almost nothing we do in this world is done in isolation. At work or at play, you&39;ll find yourself in groups, working with other people: your team at work, a meeting with colleagues, your family, a holiday with friends, a group of students working together, a day out walking in the mountains, a group of neighbors wanting to make changes. It is now recognized that being able to work successfully with other people is one of the major keys to success, partly because we need to do it so often.
(2) In almost every situation where you&39;re in a group, you will need a skilled leader. All groups need leaders and all successful groups have good leaders. Groups without leaders or with weak leaders almost always break down. Members of a leaderless group often begin to feel dissatisfied and frustrated. Time is wasted and the tasks are not achieved. There are often arguments and tensions between people as there is nobody to keep the goals clear. Some personalities dominate and others disappear. Often group members begin not to come to meetings in order to avoid more disharmonies.
(3) Some people are natural leaders. The celebrity chef, Antonio Carluccio says, "true leaders are born and you can spot them in kitchens." They&39;re people who combine toughness, fairness and humor. Although a lot of people agree that there are some natural-born leaders, most people now recognize that leadership can also be taught. Our professional and experienced staff can train almost anyone how to be a successful leader. Good leaders don&39;t make people do things in a bossy, controlling way. You can learn how to involve everyone, encouraging the whole group to work towards a common goal.
(4) Our training courses use activities and techniques to develop a range of qualities which are necessary to be a good leader. Self-confidence is vital for you to overcome your own fears about being a leader. Successful leaders also need to be calm and intelligent. They need to be able to work out good strategies and make sound judgments under pressure. Lastly, and probably most importantly, good leaders need to be sensitive, sociable and be able to get on with a wide range of people. Good leadership is essentially the ability to influence others and good leaders allow all members of the group to contribute.
