听力原文: Robert was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 20 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Robert was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he succeeded in selling his small but genuine collection of early U.S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his imitations to England and Canada for sale and circulation. He had a hard time selling his products, because he couldn't approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who didn't have much knowledge in the field. But Robert had many ways to make his work look real. For example, he bought old books to use aged paper of the title page, and he could treat paper and ink with chemical. In Robert's time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the southern states, so Robert invented a respectable lady known as Miss Foamy Jackson, the only daughter of General Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny's financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Robert had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. Yet all this activity did not prevent Robert from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his imitations from the originals.

B.Selling false signature.

C.Making fast food.

Helping International Students Make Friends

One study in the United States found that thirty-eight percent of foreign students said they had no close American friends.

1.Elisabeth Gareis teaches in the Department of Communication Studies at Baruch College in New York. She says efforts on how to improve relationships between foreign and American students have yet to be studied in detail. But she says these efforts should begin with the college or university, and that these institutions have been working harder.

Ms. Gareis suggests that students should be encouraged to take part in different activities, such as taking walks, going on bike rides, field or camping trips, and attending parties, sporting events or film festivals. She says such activities should be held repeatedly throughout the school term to bring students together. She also suggests that foreign students share housing with American students.

She says if the new students make friends as they begin school, they will come to feel part of the life and traditions of the university, as well as create long lasting friendships throughout their university career.

听力原文: Why must we pay taxes? The answer is that the government needs money for many things, for example to pay its soldiers, sailors and airmen, to build roads, bridges, offices, schools, etc; and only the people of the country can supply the money.

One of the most important taxes is income-tax which a person pays according to the amount of his income, whether he is a merchant, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper. This is called a "direct" tax, because it is paid in money direct to the government.

Another tax is paid on goods such as watches, new clothes, tobacco, wine, etc. When they are brought into a country, such a tax is paid as part of the price of these goods if they are later sold in shops. We call it "indirect" tax because it is paid indirectly through the shopkeeper.

People usually complain about having to pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent on things that they and their families need. We need policemen to catch thieves, to see that men obey the laws, to direct traffic, etc., and they must be paid what they earn; children need education and there must be schools and teachers; we want our streets to be kept clean, and the wages of men who do this kind of work have to be paid.

Taxes, anyway, cannot be avoided. We buy our own food and clothes and pay for our own amusements; but there are several things that the State finds the money for, and that are necessary for us if our society is to continue. We have no real cause to complain, when we are asked to supply money to be spent for the good of ourselves and for our fellow citizens.

(30)

A.The tax that one pays to the companies instead of government.

B.The tax that one pays through the shopkeeper for the goods.

C.The tax is paid as part of the price of the goods.

D.The tax is not paid to the government.
