听力原文: Faces, like fingerprints, are unique. Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another. Yet a very young child or even an animal, such as a pigeon can learn to recognize faces. We also tell people apart by how they behave, when we talk about someone's personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make that individual different from others. Like the human face, human personality is very complex. But describing someone's personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face. If you were asked to describe what a "nice face" looked like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so. But if you were asked to describe a "nice person", you might begin to think about someone who was kind, considerate, friendly, warm, and so forth. There are many words to describe how a person thinks, feels and acts. There are nearly 18, 000 English words characterizing differences in people's behavior. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing his personality. People have always tried to describe each other. Actors in early Greek drama wore masks to show the audience whether they played the main bad character or the hero's role. In fact, the words "person" and "personality" come from the Latin persona, meaning "mask". Today most television and movie actors do not wear masks. But we can easily tell the "good guys" from the "bad guys" because the two types differ in appearance as well as in actions.

(33)

A.People have different personalities.

B.People can learn to recognize faces.

C.People differ from each other in facial features.

听力原文: Lions are opportunists. They prefer to eat without having to do too much work. When resting in the shade, they are also watching the sky to see what is flying by, and even in the heat of the day they will suddenly start up and run a mile across the plains to find out what is going on. If another animal has made a kill, they will drive it off and take the kill for themselves. A grown lion can easily eat 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding. Often they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down. The lionesses(the females), being thinner and faster, are better hunters than the males. But the males don't mind. After the kill they move in and take the best share.

Most kills are made at night or just before daybreak. We have seen many, many daylight attempts but only ten kills. Roughly, it's about twenty daytime attempts for one kill.

When lions are hiding for an attack by a water hole, they wait patiently and can charge at any second. The kill is the exciting moment in the day-to-day life of the lion, since these great animals spend most of their time, about 20 hours a day, sleeping and resting.

Lions are Social cats, and when they are having a rest, they love to touch each other. After drinking at a water hole, a lioness rests her head on another's back. When walking, young lions often touch faces with older ones, an act of close ties among members of the group.

(33)

A.Because lions are cruel animals.

B.Because lions are clever animals.

C.Because lions like to take every chance to eat.

D.Because lions like to take advantage of other animals.

听力原文: Human beings enjoy challenges. Many of them like physical challenges. They ask themselves questions like these: How fast can I run ? How high can I climb? How deep can I dive? How far can I swim? How long can I hold my breath? How much can I lift? How high can I jump? Because people enjoy challenges, they like to play sports and watch other people play sports. They like climbing, running, diving, lifting, jumping, and so on. Every four years millions of people all over the world enjoy the international sports competitions called the Olympics.

There are challenges that are not physical challenges. There are social and intellectual challenges, too. Leonardo Da Vinci, who lived in Italy during the fifteenth century, enjoyed every possible challenge. He was an artist and painted the well-known picture, the Mona Lisa. He was an inventor who invented a device to let people breathe under water. He was a scientist, and he learned a great deal about human anatomy.

Another kind of challenge faced the Egyptians between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago when they decided to build the first pyramid. They used six million tons of rock. That is enough to build a ten-foot wall around all of France. Four hundred thousand men worked for twenty years to build it.

So, for thousands of years, people accept challenges. Today we still have many challenges before us. Medical science faces the challenges of conquering the many diseases which still attack human beings. Engineers and planners must build new cities and new kinds of transportation. Scientists must develop new forms of energy. And many of us are interested in the challenge of space. We live in an age of challenge.

(30)

A.Intellectual challenge.

B.Social challenge.

C.Physical challenge.

D.Economic challenge.
