听力原文: A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It is remarkable first for what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sport to business to fashion to science, and the range of comment and special features as well, from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art, theatre and music. A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and on glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the next. A good modem newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality, its immediate relation to what is happening in your world end your locality now. But immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient value. For all these reasons, no two people really read the same paper: what each person does is to put together out of the pages of that day's paper, his own selection and sequence, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill end self-awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading.

(30)

A.Uniform. style.

B.Wide coverage.

C.Speed in reporting news.

听力原文: Mr. Robinson won a lot of money on the football pools, but he did not know what would be the best thing to do with it, so he went to a friend who knew a lot about money matters. This friend said to him, "Go and buy some modern paintings. Their value goes up every year. '

Mr. Robinson went to a good art shop and looked at some modern paintings. He did not understand them at all, and thought that they were terrible--and also very expensive. At last he saw a small picture which did not have a price on it. It was square and white, and had a black spot in the middle, and a narrow brass frame. Mr. Robinson liked it better than any of the others in the shop.

"How much is this one?" he said to the shopkeeper.

"That, sir," answered the shopkeeper, "is the electric light switch."

听力原文:M: Hi, Sandy. How are your finals going?

W: Oh, hi, Michael. I finished my last exam this morning, and I finished two term papers. I finally feel like I can see the light.

M: Great. Now how about a change? I've got two tickets for the new modern art exhibit downtown. Do you want to go with me?

W: Oh, I don't know. I don't know anything about modern art, and I'm no artist.

M: You don't have to be an artist to enjoy a good art show! Besides, at least it's something different from studying.

W: You are right. Have you seen this exhibit yet?

M: No, but I've heard that it's great. The exhibit was in New York last summer and in Chicago after that. And next week it goes to Los Angeles.

W: Oh. Well, it ought to be good then.

M: And, besides, next door to the modern art museum is a new Asian art museum. So we could hit both of them if you're up for it.

W: OK, you've talked me into it. Did you want to go this afternoon?

M: If you have time. I'm ready.

W: OK. Let's meet after lunch. Shall we meet right here?

M: Sounds good to me. See you then.

听力原文: In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each farm family lives on its own fields, often beyond the sight of any neighbors. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning, American farmers stay on their land throughout the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on buses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas, there are small schools serving a few farm families, and the children walk to school.

Of course life keeps changing for everyone, including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios, and television sets. And of course there are modern machines for farming. All of these have changed farm life.

For many years, however, farming in America was often a lonely way of living. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new methods, and to trust their own ideas instead of following older ways.

(30)

A.They live in bigger houses.

B.They live in villages or in towns.

C.Each family lives on its own fields.

D.They use modern machines in farming.

听力原文: (33) Our environment is being polluted faster than nature and man's present efforts can prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more motor vehicles, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials. What can explain and solve this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man--by his desire for a modern way of life. (34)We make "increasing industrialization" our chief aim. For its sake, we are willing to sacrifice everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the countryside into the cities, eager for the benefits of modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem. Isn't it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going and why?

It is like the story about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loudspeaker: "I've some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we're making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we're lost and don't know where we're going." (35)The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when applied to our modern society.

(30)

A.Because there are many developing nations.

B.Because people use so many motor vehicles.

C.Because we have more and more industry.

D.Because we are building more vehicles.

听力原文: Large modern cities are too big to control. They impose their own living conditions on the people who inhabit them. City-dwellers are obliged by their environment to adopt a wholly unnatural way of life. They lost touch with the land and rhythm of nature. It is possible to live such an air-conditioned existence in a large city that you are barely conscious of the seasons. A few flowers in a public park(if you have the time to visit it) may remind you that it is spring or summer. A few leaves clinging to the pavement may remind you that it is autumn. Beyond that, what is going on in nature seems totally irrelevant. All the simple, good things of life like sunshine and fresh air are at a premium. Tall buildings blot out the sun. The traffic fumes pollute the atmosphere.

Even the distinction between day and night is lost. The flow of traffic goes on unceasingly and the noise never stops.

(33)

A.The people are not in regular communication with the rhythm of nature.

B.The people can't enjoy sunshine and fresh air.

C.Modern cities offer better schools, more chances of employment.

D.Traffic fumes pollute the air.

听力原文: Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really like modern music; they find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world. Such people look for perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient with anyone who is brave enough to experiment with new materials or to express himself or the age in original ideas. It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a painting, the artist's failure concerns himself alone, but if it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people do, that modern architecture is nothing.

We can't judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient buildings. Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The modern architect knows he should learn from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to imitate the past. He is too proud to do that.

(30)

A.Because they are aged.

B.Because they find it hard to accept modern things.

C.Because they take their standards of perfection from the Greek.

D.Because they look at things by the standards of the past.

听力原文: In ancient societies sick people had to rely on medicine men and witch doctors. (Some people still rely on them.) It was believed that a person was sick because he had been attacked by evil spirits. The witch doctor's job was to drive off those spirits. His technique involved a combination of three methods. The first method was religious. He chanted magic words and good luck charms. He thought these words and charms had the power over the evil spirits. Secondly, he fed the patient some mixtures. These mixtures were often filthy and disgusting, to make the evil spirits so uncomfortable that they would gladly run away.

The third method was to give the patient medicines prepared from certain plants and herbs. From our point of view, this was the only method that had any value. Modern scientific study has shown that some of these remedies had real usefulness in curing sickness or relieving pain.

A.Ill luck.

听力原文:M: Are you ready for the trip to museums in the Big Apple? I can hardly wait.

W: The Big Apple? What are you talking about?

M: The Big Apple is the nickname for New York City.

W: Oh, tell me, where does the nickname the Big Apple come from?

M: The jazz musicians of the 1920's are responsible for the name. When they played a concert in a city, they called that city an apple.

W: Oh, but I still can't understand why they called it an apple instead of calling something else like a cake?

M: I am not very sure about that. New York was the biggest city in the country, and the best place for a jazz concert. So the musicians called it the Big Apple.

W: I think it's not only a big apple for the musicians but a big apple for everyone who wants to find an opportunity in that city.

M: That's a good idea. Well, you are going to New York with us, aren't you?

W: Yes, I'm going to. I'm especially looking forward to seeing the Museum of Modern Arts.

M: And I heard that there's a special show of 20th century American Painters there.

W: Amazing! New York is such a fascinating place. And it even has an interesting nickname.

M: Want to have a bite of the Big Apple, don't you?

W: Sure.

A.An exhibit of paintings.

B.A Broadway play.

C.A modern dance production.
